AACSB Accreditation Confirmed for School of Business and Economics

In April 2000, the School of Business and Economics celebrated when it became the first business school in the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities to be fully accredited by AACSB International.  Ten years later, the excitement is a bit more subdued but the outcome is just as positive.  Last October, SBE hosted a Peer Review Team of deans from other AACSB accredited universities, and they left with a very positive report to present to the AACSB International Board of Directors.  Last week we were finally notified by AACSB that, "the Peer Review Team's recommendation to extend accreditation of the business degree programs offered by your School has been concurred with by the Maintenance of Accreditation Committee and ratified by the Board of Directors. Congratulations to you, the faculty, students, staff, and all supporters of the business programs."

As President Dr. Phil Eaton would say, "This is a big deal!"  When learning this news, he wrote to Dean Van Duzer, "Congratulations to you, the whole faculty, the staff, and the students of SBE. This is great news, indeed. I know this process is a demanding one, but when we reach this positive conclusion, you can rest with the affirmation and confirmation of what a great school you all have built. Way to go! I will do my best to trumpet this new and renewed recognition to the world."

Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Les Steele added his congratulations. "Well done and well deserved. Thanks to all of you for the excellent report and visit. But most importantly thank you for the daily work that you do that this accreditation affirms."

Learn more about AACSB accreditation here or view our flash presentation by clicking on the AACSB seal on the left side of the SBE home page.

Peter Greer, President of Hope International, here this Friday

Peter Greer, President of Hope International (Microfinance) will be on campus to speak about his new book, The Poor will be Glad, on Friday, January 15th, from 12:30-1:20 in the Library Seminar Room.  Two of our students (Jason Williams and Mike Allen) have recently interned at Hope and we have partnered with this organization in several other ways.  Peter is a thoughtful, young, and dynamic leader who you will enjoy hearing.  He is a graduate of Harvard's Kennedy School of Government and Messiah College.  Prior to his role at Hope, he spent time working in microfinance and development in Rwanda and Cambodia.  Dr. Kenman Wong, who heads up the SBE Microfinance Initiative, especially invites all SBE students to this special event.

SBE Business as a Calling Day: Tuesday, February 9th

Are you “called” to a career in Business? Come explore this question with us on Tuesday, February 9th, for our first Business as a Calling Day. All SBE classes held before 3:00 p.m. will be cancelled on Tuesday, February 9th, to allow students to attend our inaugural Business as a Calling day. Events will include a keynote talk by Bill Pollard (ServiceMaster), followed by breakout sessions allowing discussion and reflection on various aspects of business related to “calling,” and an alumni panel where we will hear from SPU alums about their experience being “called” to their work and jobs.

Interested students are also invited to the special Kiros breakfast that morning: A Breakfast Conversation with Bill Pollard, former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The ServiceMaster Company.  Mr. Pollard will be speaking on "The Virtue of Profit," 7:00 - 8:30 a.m., Upper Gwinn Commons.  This breakfast is co-sponsored by the SBE Center for Integrity in Business. (Breakfast $25/student.)

Ethix Journal goes Online

Last quarter, the journal Ethix officially became a publication of the SBE Center for Integrity in Business.  Also, in October, Ethix was transformed into an online journal.  Students should check it out.  Congratulation also to Alison Howard, an SBE junior, who has been hired as the new Ethix Editorial Assistant.

Apply Now to SBE Majors — The Application Deadline is Wednesday, January 20th

At the SBE Undergraduate Committee meeting on January 12th, it was reported that fifty students had already completed their online applications for admission to majors in SBE.  Applications are only accepted from the end of Autumn quarter until January 20th each year.  One hundred places in the School of Business and Economics will be filled in early February, and applicants should expect to learn of the decision of the Undergraduate Committee by February 15th.

Update your SBE Scholarship Data

Each spring, SBE makes a number of undergraduate scholarship awards.  In recent years, scholarship application data has been collected from each student at the time they apply to a major in SBE.  Students who were admitted prior to this year may wish at this time to update their scholarship application data by completing this convenient online form.  Not doing so will not keep one from being considered for an SBE scholarship, however, the additional information may be helpful to the Undergraduate Committee.  The deadline for updating your SBE scholarship application data is February 17th.

SPUBA off to China again in 2010

Check the study abroad bulletin board in McKenna Hall and the web page for more information after the schedule is available. Drs. Learned and Poznanska are scheduled to be the SBE faculty leading the trip this year.  Dr. Doug Downing continues as the SPUBA (Seattle Pacific University Business Abroad) faculty coordinator.

AUSBE: The Associated Students of Business and Economics

In honor of the late Dr. Lisa Klein Surdyk, AUSBE is hosting a fundraiser to support her family. AUSBE is collecting donations to go towards gift certificates to restaurants, movies, and other family activities. If you would like to contribute to this cause, there is a collection being taken at the SBE front desk (2nd floor, McKenna Hall) and at all AUSBE events.

Also from AUSBE...

  • Tomorrow (January 14th), Donuts with the Dean, 9:15-10:20 a.m. in the McKenna Conference Room.  Ask Jeff Van Duzer why AACSB accreditation is such a big deal, or what's new in SBE, or what does he have against cats, or whatever else is on your mind.

  • AUSBE will be hosting two Meet Your Professor events during winter quarter. Come learn about your professors and enjoy FREE lunch!  Dates and professors will be announced soon.
