Douglas Downing, Ph.D., Economics Chair
If you choose to study economics, the fundamental issue you'll explore is how a society should manage its scarce resources. Economic decisions are crucial in determining not only what products a society will produce, but also how a society will produce and distribute those products among competing interests. The issues covered in economics are many of the same issues you see in newspaper headlines every day: What should U.S. policy be toward the WTO (World Trade Organization) and global trade? What is the role of antitrust policy in technology industries? How should the telecommunications industry be regulated? What is the best policy to reduce poverty? How can we protect the environment? What are biblical principles of wealth and stewardship? Seattle Pacific University's program is distinctive because it offers economics majors the opportunity to study these critical issues from a Christian perspective. All students in the School of Business and Economics at Seattle Pacific are strongly encouraged to participate in internships. Seattle's business opportunities are extensive, and an SPU career counselor will assist you with internship placement. Seattle Pacific students have held internships at places such as Safeco, Morgan Stanley, Starbucks, and Nordstrom. Graduate with degrees in economics have a variety of options. Some students go on to graduate study at schools such as the University of Washington, Notre Dame, or Baylor University Law School. Other students pursue careers in the business world at places including Boeing or Washington Mutual Bank. Still others have found leadership roles working with government organizations such as the Federal Reserve Bank.
