ANNOUNCEMENTS

Hear Robert Seiple at Church Leaders Forum
Join area church leaders for lunch and an opportunity to hear Dr. Robert Seiple on Tuesday, November 7, from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in Upper Gwinn Commons. Seiple was the first ambassador-at-large for international religious freedom at the U.S. State Department. He recently resigned to start a think tank on religious freedom at Eastern College near Philadelphia. Registration is $10. Register on line at http://www.spu.edu/churchleaders or call (206) 281-2100 by Wednesday, November 1.

SPU Theatre Presents "Holiday Memories"
SPU's Theatre season kicks off with "Holiday Memories," two short plays based on works by Truman Capote. Warm, humorous, and capturing the spirit of the holidays, these plays will be fun for a whole variety of ages. The production runs November 9-11 and November 16-18. Show time is 7:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale now at the FPA Box Office between 2:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, or call to reserve them at (206) 281-2959. Cost is $10, or $6 for students and seniors.

Amnesty International Letter-Writing Campaign
Amnesty International (A.I.) is an independent, international movement working impartially for the release of all prisoners of conscience, for fair and prompt trials for political prisoners and for an end to torture and executions. Recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, A.I. consists of over one million members and supporters in more than 150 countries around the globe. SPU’s chapter of A.I. has been active for many years, sponsoring letter writing campaigns and campus events related to human- rights activism. This quarter A.I. is hosting a letter writing table in the SUB on alternate Tuesdays and Thursdays: November 2, November 14 and November 30. Please drop by for a few minutes and write a letter on behalf of a person unjustly imprisoned. Your efforts truly can make a difference. For further information contact A.I.’s student leaders Jess Harmon at (206) 286-6322 or rowtheboat@spu.edu; Larissa George at (206) 286-6322 or lgeorge@spu.edu; faculty advisor Mícheál Roe at (206) 281-2252 or mroe@spu.edu.

Host a Visiting Student
The American Cultural Exchange (A.C.E.) Language Institute at SPU needs caring, responsible Christian host families to provide a seven-week homestay experience for a group of 16 students from Tokyo Christian University in Japan. Our students would stay approximately seven weeks from January 4 to February 26, 2001. Please consider becoming a host to one of our students. This is an excellent opportunity to share American customs and culture while developing new friendships. Remuneration for room and board is provided. If you are not able to host a student at this time, please ask your friends, family and acquaintances, especially the ones who live near SPU. We really need your help and would appreciate any efforts in this matter. Please contact Paulina at the A.C.E. office at (206) 281-2106 if you are interested or have referrals.

Prayers Needed for UI
Please contact Alicia Akins at akakins@spu.edu if you would like to be added to a fantastic list of people who receive Urban Involvement prayer requests via e-mail.

Christmas Bazaar Registration
Do you or someone you know make and sell handmade craft items? Come and take part in the SPU Christmas Bazaar! Located in the SUB Fireside room, the bazaar will run from 9:30 a.m-3:00 p.m. on Friday, December 1. Registration forms for the bazaar are available at the Student Programs front desk on the second floor of the SUB. The cost is $10 for a four-foot table and $20 for an eight-foot table. Contact Susie England at sengland@spu.edu or (206) 281-2831. Space is limited. Registration forms are due by Tuesday, November 21. Please note that all items must be handmade (no commercial items are allowed). All items must comply with SPU's lifestyle standards.

Book Orders Through the Bookstore
As part of our preparations for ordering course books for next quarter, we will begin returning most unsold books to the publishers after mid-quarter exams. As your campus bookstore, we recognize there may be certain titles that will be used later in the quarter. In such instances, we will keep your course books in stock on our shelves. We ask that you let us know as soon as possible which title(s) you would like to have held late into the term. Please convey your request directly to Joseph Picconatto at (206) 281-2137 or at spu@bkstore.com or bookstore@spu.edu.

November 3 Deadline for Book Orders
We would like to have as many textbook orders for next quarter as possible by November 3. To facilitate this process, we have added an online ordering option at the bookstore Web site. You may access this form at www.bkstore.com/spu/. Look for the sections marked "For Faculty" and then proceed to "Textbook Adoptions." Once your order is submitted, you will receive an e-mail confirmation within 24 hours. A paper confirmation will be forwarded to the appropriate departmental administrative assistant. As always, paper forms of the book request will be available so look for these in your mailboxes within the next couple of days. On a final note, my assistant manager Chris and I have earmarked several titles that we are assuming will be used again next quarter. We will phone or e-mail instructors using these titles on an individual basis. If you plan to use a book for Winter Quarter that you are currently using, simply respond to this e-mail stating (by way of example) "I will use the ACCT 2361 from fall as the ACCT 2361 for winter." We would like to make this process as easy as possible for you, and any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks--Joseph Picconatto, your bookstore manager.
