ANNOUNCEMENTS

Goodbye, Alec

After 30 years as a student, professor and current dean of the School of Business and Economics, Alec Hill is leaving SPU to become president and CEO of InterVarsity/USA. A farewell reception for Alec will be held Tuesday, June 5, from 2-4 p.m. in Upper Gwinn Commons. The tributes start at 2:30 p.m. Please come wish Alec and his family well.

Something New for Graduates
For the first time, SPU graduate students will have their own "hooding" ceremony on Friday, June 8, at 8:30 a.m. in Martin Square. Students graduating with master's degrees will be presented with their hood - an ornamental scarf worn over their academic gown and indicating their graduation from SPU. The student's program director and dean will drape the hood over their shoulders. Master's degree students are then invited to participate in Ivy Cutting and join the faculty procession to the Loop.

Tom Box, director of athletics, will give an update on what's happening in Athletics and their accomplishments. Tami Anderson, assistant director of campus ministries, will tell us about what's happening this summer with SPRINT, and there will be a special time of prayer for the teams going out.

Ichiro, Ichiro, Ichiro!
Come and see Seattle Mariner's star outfielder Ichiro in person at SPU Night with the Mariners on Tuesday, August 7, at Safeco Field. Don't miss this annual summer event as SPU faculty, staff, students and alumni gather to watch the division-leading Seattle Mariners take on the Toronto Bluejays. Addictions Lecture
The SPU Counseling Center is sponsoring a lecture series titled "Coping With Life in the 21st Century." The next lecture, titled "Addictions: When We Do What We Don't Want to Do," will be held on Monday, June 11, at 6:30 p.m. in the Library Seminar Room. Speakers will be Patrick Hopp, SPU assistant professor of clinical psychology, and Cheryl McCoy, graduate student in Marriage and Family Therapy. The purpose of the lectures are to increase the community's awareness of the services provided by the counseling center. The University Counseling Center (UCC) is staffed by a team of mental health professionals who include licensed psychologists, credentialed marriage and family therapists and therapists in training. They provide a full range of psychological services to the greater Seattle area. Clients are individuals, couples, families and children referred to us from schools, churches, agencies and medical settings.

Ever Lived in Marston-Watson?
If you are a former resident of Marston-Waston, you are invited to participate in a brief closing ceremony. Join us for a time of recognition for the end of Marston-Watson as a residence hall. Meet on Tuesday, June 5, at 8:30 p.m. in front of the hall. If you have any questions, please contact Residence Life Coordinator Chuck Strawn at (206) 281-7285.

Staff Payroll Changes?
The 15th of each month is the last day to make adjustments or additions to your staff payroll check.

Tell Your Family and Friends About SPU's New Program
This fall, SPU will offer a professional studies program targeted for adults with technical or professional degrees who are interested in getting a baccalaureate degree. Students can complete a bachelor's degree by taking general education courses in liberal arts and an approved minor. For more information and a complete list of schools whose credits transfer directly to the SPU professional studies program, visit the Web site or call (206) 281-2021. http://www.spu.edu/depts/profstudies/

SPU Students Participate in Memorial Day Service
The SPU Symphonic Wind Ensemble participated in the recent Memorial Day program at Evergreen-Washelli Memorial Park in Seattle. The Ensemble, conducted by Ron Haight, performed a pre-program concert and then played patriotic music, including a percussion piece with drum music from the Civil War, during the program. The group was very well received by the audience, including Washington State Lt. Governor Brad Owen, who mentioned the group during his Memorial Day address.

FACULTY/STAFF NEWS

Ferreiro Lectures on Protestant Reformation
Alberto Ferreiro, professor of history, gave a four-part lecture on the Protestant Reformation at Assumption Catholic Parish in Seattle last month. Topics covered the main streams of Protestantism and Luther, Calvin and others. The last talk was on ecumenism and the significant achievements that 35 years of dialogue have produced and the fruit of the Second Vatican Council. It also included the great issues that still divide. Attendance was robust and discussions were lively and fruitful.

Krienke Uses Hubble Telescope for Research
Karl Krienke, emeritus professor of physics and mathematics, and Paul Hodge, professor of astronomy at the University of Washington, had their paper "HST Photometry of Clusters of Galaxies Behind the Dwarf Irregular Galaxies DDO216, IC1613 and the SMC" accepted for publication in the September issue of the refereed research journal, Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific. They used the Hubble Space Telescope to measure light from distant clusters of galaxies seen through the nearby galaxies: Pegasus Dwarf, IC1613 and the Lindsey 31 region of the Small Magellanic Cloud. The professors then inferred reddening and extinction due to the nearby galaxy. They also set quantitative limits in this method as an experimental technique.

Kelly's Story on Eugene Peterson
Clint Kelly, University communications specialist, wrote the cover story for the July issue of Mature Living. "The Story Behind The Message" features 1954 SPU alumnus and 1995 Alumnus of the Year Eugene Peterson and his modern translation of the Bible, written in today's common vernacular.
