COMMUNITY NEWS

RAFFLE delay: Day of Common Learning
You may be holding an INVALID TICKET! A couple things have been brought to our attention. Some people may be holding both halves of the same ticket (you would know this because it would say "Ticket" and "Keep this Coupon" and both halves would have the same pre-printed number on them). If this is the case, please bring both halves of your ticket to 2nd floor SUB, Dean of Student Life. Those students who attended either the Pride and Prejudice workshop at 1 p.m. in Bertona 3, or the Lessons from Vietnam work shop at 2p.m. in McKenna 117, please bring your ticket to 2nd floor SUB, Dean of Student Life to swap your ticket for a valid ticket. Sorry for the confusion. The winning ticket will be drawn at the Senate meeting Nov. 1st. You need not be present to win. Announcements will be made in To the Point and the ASSP e-newsletter. Contact Carrie McCrimmon with questions, x2481, mccric@spu.edu

Sacred Sounds of Christmas
Sacred Sounds of Christmas; SPU's annual Christmas concert at Benaroya Hall is coming! Student rate tickets are on sale now through ASSP for $8. Come to the ASSP office to get yours! Regular tickets are $18 &$15 and on sale through www.ticketmaster.com. Contact Kendra Dye with questions: kendra@spu.edu or x2100.

Election Watch Party in Weter
Come watch the election returns with fellow students, faculty and staff at this election night party in Weter featuring expert analysis and commentary by faculty from the Department of Political Science and Geography. The festivities start at 5pm in Weter lounge on November 2nd.

Ben Anderson to speak on Disability Awareness
Ben Anderson, founder of “Break Through Inc." (www.breakthroughinc.com), will be on campus November 2, 2004. Ben was born with cerebral palsy. He began “Break Through Inc." in 1978. Ben now speaks to churches, schools and organizations around the country sharing his story and providing leadership training to build awareness and sensitivity towards people with disabilities. There are two events on Nov. 2 open to all students. From 1-1:50 in the Science Building room 112, Ben will be talking about his life experiences and how it has given him a better understanding of God and the church (CFE credit is available). From 3-3:50 in Peterson Hall room 303, Ben will be directly addressing his experiences in school and other government agencies he has worked with as a person with a disability. The second session will have time for Q & A. If you have questions about either session, please contact Disability Support Services at disabilityservices@spu.edu or 281-2272.

Commuter Collegium Open House
Wondering what's going on in the old Fireside Room? This is where SPU has just created an exciting program to benefit commuters while they are on campus, something we're calling a “Collegium". We're opening this up for an open house Tuesday - Thursday, Nov. 2-4, for all prospective members to check it out. A Collegium is a gathering place... a home away from home for commuter students where they can relax, study, eat, spend some quiet time alone, or catch up with classmates. A Collegium is also a place where commuters can come for an informal talk given by a favorite faculty member, see a special film, or share a dinner with other students facing many of the same issues. Membership in The Pacific Collegium at SPU is free however the facility and program can only accommodate a limited number of participants. We are currently limiting membership to 300 commuter students. To apply, submit an application at the open house.

Walls Lecture Offers Wesleyan Perspective of the Passion of Christ
All students are cordially invited to attend the 2004 Paul T. Walls Lecture, "The Passion of Christ: A Wesleyan Perspective," given by Dr. Randy Maddox, the Paul T. Walls Chair of Wesleyan Theology, on Thursday, November 4 at 9:30 a.m. Last year, two different portrayals of the passion of Christ appeared: Mel Gibson's film The Passion of the Christ and The Glorious Appearing, the final volume in the Left Behind series. This year's Walls Lecture will reflect on these two portrayals in the light of some central Wesleyan convictions about Christ's saving work. The lecture will be held at the First Free Methodist Church and will be followed with refreshments in the Fine Center.
