|New Exhibit at Art Center Gallery|
The Seattle Pacific Art Center Gallery presents “Ripe," a group show on contemporary experiments in the still-life genre. Many of the paintings feature fruit, or other objects that are swelling, bursting, or decaying. The idea is to affirm the special character of the organic and the physical in a digital age that can seem cut off from the brute material facts of birth, life, woundedness, ecstasy, decay, and death. Artists include SPU art adjunct faculty Zack Bent and Natalie St. Martin, Seattle artists Eric Elliot and Christian van Minnen, and artists Linda Hutchins, Gregory Jacobsen, and Steven Levin. The exhibition is open through December 3. An opening reception will be held Friday, October 15, 7–9 p.m. at the Gallery. |An Evening of Indonesian Dance|
Enjoy an evening of traditional and new dances from Indonesia on Friday, October 15, 7:30 p.m., in the E.E. Bach Theatre. The performance will also feature new dances from West Java and East Java. The event is free and open to the public, and is wheelchair accessible.

“My name is Lindy Pearson, and I'm the administrative assistant and budget manager for the Office of University Ministries and the Center for Worship (OUM/CFW). Part of my job includes managing the Cadres program. I am delighted to be a part of such a great program. My goal is to encourage faculty and staff members to get involved and lead a Cadre. You will have a chance to delve into your passions and interact with students who have similar interests. If you would be interested in meeting with students and journeying through a special topic or specific area of interest throughout the year, contact me at 206-281-7242. Below are some frequently asked questions about Cadres.
What Is a Cadre?
Cadres are designed to be an educational experience for full-time undergraduate students. They provide an opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to interact with one another and celebrate what it means to be a faith community. Cadres are groups of students led by a faculty or staff member, and they explore the implications of the Christian faith for personal and contemporary issues, academic disciplines, or vocation (some involve Bible study, but this is not essential). Cadres are also an excellent opportunity for students who are exploring the Christian faith, but haven't made a faith commitment.
Who Can Lead A Cadre?
Any SPU faculty or staff member can be a Cadre leader. Often, students are
appointed by the Cadre leader to help coordinate. However, the expectation is that
the faculty or staff member is present at each Cadre meeting.
How Will Students Hear About My Cadre?
All Cadres are listed on the OUM/CFW website. OUM/CFW will also distribute Cadre flyers at the beginning of chapel and group services. They can also be listed in the weekly OUM/CFW newsletter and the e-newsletter for students, “Loopy."
How Are Cadres Reviewed and Approved?
Cadre proposals will be reviewed based on the following criteria:
Cadre content reflects the SPU mission statement, community standards, and the doctrinal statement of the University.
An outline stating the purpose of your Cadre and the specific things you plan on studying is requested.
Cadre goals support Christian community formation by involving SPU faculty, staff, and students.
OUM/CFW reserves the right to approve or disapprove any Cadre proposals based on the degree to which the proposal reflects the above criteria.

the movie, America the Beautiful (PG-13), with special guest Darryl Roberts, the film's director, writer, and producer. This event is Friday, October 15, 6:30–10 p.m., in the Fine Center at First Free Methodist Church. |Emeriti Retirement Health Solutions on Campus October 19|
Find out how SPU is helping you save for health care needs in retirement. Current contributions to eligible employee accounts are $73 per month – $876 per year! On Tuesday, October 19, an Emeriti Health Solutions representative will be on campus to explain how these contributions provide both reimbursement and guaranteed health care retirement benefits. For those approaching retirement in the next 1 to 10 years, the 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. sessions will address Emeriti insurance options and how they relate to Medicare. For those planning to retire more than 10 years from now, the session beginning at 9:45 a.m. will address reasons you need to save for retiree health care, unique tax advantages of the Emeriti program, options available under the program, and how to make your own contributions. Sessions are 90 minutes in length and will be held in Otto Miller Hall 227. Although the meetings focus on different audiences, you're encouraged to attend whichever session your schedule allows. |Spread the Word About the Christian College Fair|
On Monday, October 18, 7–9 p.m., nearly 50 colleges from across the country will attend the National Christian College Fair of Greater Seattle at the Bear Creek School in Redmond. SPU will also be at the fair. This is a great opportunity for students and families to get information from Christian schools around the country. |Intentional Conversations About Race|
[In Context], a new discussion series sponsored by the ASSP Intercultural Director DeHeavalyn Pullium, is open to students, faculty, and staff who would like the opportunity to engage in honest and intentional conversations about race. This is not simply to equip participants to help the “other," but also to challenge, strengthen, and possibly revise participants' preconceived understandings. Space is limited to 10–15 participants, and the registration deadline is October 21. There will be other sessions offered throughout the year, but the Autumn Quarter session will focus on “The Colorblind Mentality" and will be held every Thursday, 9:30–10:30 a.m., October 29–December 2. Destruction'), for the Pet Photo of the Week. My husband and I got Max when he was
just 8 weeks old as our first pet as a couple. We were drawn in by his calm,
reserved demeanor as he would watch his kitten siblings roughhouse and get into
all sorts of mischief. Little did we know that he was just saving his crazy
personality for us! He is now a little over 2-and-a-half years old (picture to
right), and enjoys playing with rubber bands, Starbucks stir sticks, and pencils."

|Downing Completes Book Revision|
Douglas Downing, associate professor of economics, recently completed a revised version of E-Z Calculus, published by Barron's Educational Series. The book was originally published in 1982 and tells the story of a group of fantasy characters that develop ideas of calculus during the course of a series of adventures.
|Hanson Lectures for Seattle Symphony|
On September 23–26, Professor of Music Eric Hanson presented the preconcert lectures for the Seattle Symphony at Benaroya Hall. His paper, "Brahms' Third Symphony and the Unrequited Theme," demonstrated how Brahms creates musical narrative through structure and inter-textual allusion.
|Thorpe's New Book|
Professor of English Doug Thorpe will have his book Wisdom Sings the World: Poetry, Creation and the Way of Dwelling published next summer by Codhill Press and distributed by SUNY (State University of New York) Press. Much of the book is informed by Doug's work in the classroom over many years, dealing with a diversity of texts including The Divine Comedy, The Brothers Karamazov, the work of Charles Williams, and Native American novelist Leslie Silko's Ceremony. This autumn and winter he is also serving on the Episcopal bishop's seven-person Leadership Core team as St. Mark's Cathedral begins the search for a new dean. Prayers are welcomed!
|Faculty, Staff Involved in New Book, The Spirit of Food: 34 Writers on Feasting and Fasting Toward God|
Many SPU faculty and staff members were involved with the new book The Spirit of Food: 34 Writers on Feasting and Fasting Toward God (Cascade Books, 2010). The editor of the book is Leslie Leyland Fields, a member of the M.F.A. faculty. Contributors were Hannah Notess, managing editor of Response magazine; Suzanne Wolfe, English faculty; Mary Kenagy Mitchell, Image journal managing editor and adjunct faculty; Gina Ochsner and Jeanne Murray Walker, both with the M.F.A. faculty; and M.F.A. alumni Brian Volck, Denise Frame Harlan, and Alissa Herbally Coons. In addition, alumnus Andrew David did the line editing for the book.

Writing and literacy adjunct professor Jan Vallone Roberts was recently interviewed
in Writing It Real, a premium content website for those who write from
their personal experience. In the interview, Jan speaks about writing and about
her memoir, Pieces of Someday, which was published earlier this year. During
October through December, she will donate all her proceeds from the memoir to Page Ahead, a children's literacy program. Read the interview online. More

Cross Country Coach Erika Daligcon, and her husband, Assistant Soccer Coach Nate
Daligcon, are the proud parents of Jordan Mae Daligcon. She weighed 7 pounds, 1
ounce, and was 20.5 inches at birth. Erica says, “I have attached a picture with
Jordan, and Nate wearing his men's soccer shirt. (Select link below.) However, she
has already attended three cross country meets and only two soccer games, so we
know where her loyalty lies!"
