Economic Crisis Forum With SPU Faculty, Administrators

In a matter of weeks, the stock market has lost more than a third of its value. Unemployment rates are on the rise. All of the major investment banking firms have virtually disappeared. Governments around the globe have proposed massive bailouts, and many have described the current crisis as the worst since the Great Depression. How did this happen? What does it mean to SPU and you? And what difference does our Christian faith make in moments like these?

“Economic Crisis 101: Why It Happened and Why It Matters to You" is the title of a campuswide forum Wednesday, October 29, 3–5 p.m. in Upper Gwinn Commons. Designed to help SPU community members understand the financial crisis and its impact on SPU, the forum will be moderated by School of Business and Economics Dean Jeff Van Duzer. The forum will begin with an historical overview of the banking system by Associate Professor Douglas Downing. Van Duzer will then examine the current financial market and related loss of credit. Vice President of Business and Planning Don Mortenson will talk about the economic crisis' impact on SPU, and Director of Student Financial Services Jordan Grant will give an update on student loans as well as future employment opportunities. Van Duzer will conclude the forum by talking about the role of Christians in the midst of the crisis. The event is sponsored by the Office of the President, the School of Business and Economics, Associated Students of Seattle Pacific, and the Office of Student Life.




“Thursday Food for Thought" – Suzanne Wolfe and Unveiling

On October 30, SPU Instructor of English Suzanne Wolfe reads from her novel Unveiling, a subtle love story about an art restorer and her spiritual recovery. Join Professor Wolfe at “Thursday Food for Thought," a brown-bag lunch event held in the Library Reading Room, 12:30–1:15 p.m. A question-and-answer time will follow, and copies of her book will be available for purchase. This event is sponsored by the SPU Library.




Residence Halls Open for Trick or Treating

Faculty, staff, and SPU neighbors are invited to visit the Ashton, Hill, Moyer, and Emerson residence halls on Halloween, October 31, 5–7 p.m. for trick or treating. Children and parents are encouraged to come in costume and go door-to-door to receive treats and enjoy carnival games in some residence hall lobbies. Students will greet visitors at building entrances. This event is sponsored by the hall councils. Women's Tuesday Brownbag Bible Reading

Join us in the Lower Weter conference room on Tuesdays at noon as we take turns reading chapters of the Bible aloud. On Tuesday, October 28, we're beginning with Isaiah 40. We usually begin reading about 12:10. Feel free to bring your lunch, and we have lots of Bibles so you don't need to bring one. SPU Professor of Education Andrew Lumpe addresses the theoretical and practical issues of curriculum design, including philosophies of curriculum, curricular goals and objectives, alternate conceptions and designs of curriculum, process and content possibilities, planning with respect to scope and sequence, and the role of educators in the selection and development of curriculum materials. Estate Planning Seminar Oct. 30

The Seattle Pacific Foundation cordially invites you to attend our fall seminar, "Reframe Your Thinking – Leave a Legacy, Not Just an Inheritance," on Thursday, October 30, 7-8:30 p.m. in Upper Gwinn Commons. Hear what estate planning attorney Bruce Bickel has to say about legacy planning. Long-Term Care Insurance Enrollment and Guaranteed Issue

Studies show that 40 percent of those receiving long-term care are working-age adults. Interested in learning more about how to protect yourself? Consider locking in a long-term care insurance policy and rate. Eligible employees are those who work a minimum of 20 hours per week. In addition, if you were hired between 11/1/2007 and 10/31/2008, a guaranteed issue long-term care policy may be granted without completion of a medical questionnaire. A spouse, adult children, siblings, parents, and grandparents (including in-laws) of eligible employees may also apply for insurance with completion of a medical questionnaire. If you would like to learn more about this voluntary benefit, come to an informational meeting on Tuesday, November 4, at 1 p.m. or 5:15 p.m. in the Library Seminar Room. Faculty/Staff Volleyball Resumes

If the Olympic Games didn't inspire you to rediscover your inner athlete, perhaps a simple invitation will. Please come to the lower gym on Tuesdays, noon to 1:30 p.m. for faculty and staff volleyball. This is a great way to meet others from around campus while improving your bump, set, and spike – and maybe your waistline, too. If you haven't played in a while you are in luck. Neither have we! We've been on an all-star break (or maybe just a bye) for the last 18 months! Begin the Advent season with SPU's ninth annual Sacred Sounds of Christmas concert Sunday, November 30, in Benaroya Hall. Featuring SPU's nationally acclaimed Concert Choir, Wind Symphony, and other groups, this stirring performance of music and narrative tells the story of God's promise of a Savior, and the fulfillment of that promise in the birth of Jesus. This year, by popular demand, a second performance has been added, however, the 4 p.m. concert is now sold out. Ward's Article Published in National Journal

Janet Ward, associate vice president for Information and Data Management, had an article published by College and University, a journal from the American Association of Collegiate Registrar's and Admissions Officers. The article, “Understanding the Business of Higher Education: Creating Context for Your Staff Development Plan", encourages supervisors to gain a broader perspective of higher education's value and the administrative pillars that support the learning enterprise. More




Hanson Interviewed on “Classic Vermont"

On October 19, Professor of Music Eric Hanson was the guest on "Vermont Notes" on “Classic Vermont," WCVT radio (101.7 FM) in Stowe, Vermont. He was interviewed on his upcoming appearance as conductor of the Green Mountain Mahler Festival, and the historical significance of Mahler and the Fifth Symphony. On October 4, Eric adjudicated the American String Teachers Association state contest.

Dwyer Accepted Into Mensa

Jenn Dwyer, administrative assistant in the Student Counseling Center and graduate student in Marriage and Family Therapy, was recently accepted into the high-IQ society, Mensa. As an organization, American Mensa provides intelligent individuals an opportunity to meet other smart people at local, regional, and national levels. Mensans interact at entertaining events and exchange ideas through a variety of publications. Mensa members also work to help others in their communities by providing scholarships and volunteering for community-oriented activities. Congratulations, Jenn!
