“Thursday Food for Thought" – Tom Trzyna and Pacifism

On October 23, SPU Professor of English Tom Trzyna reads from Blessed Are the Pacifists, his exploration of pacifism as both a way of life and a practical method of conflict resolution. Come learn more at “Thursday Food for Thought," a brown-bag lunch event held in the Library Reading Room, 12:30–1:15 p.m. A question-and-answer time will follow, and copies of his book will be available for purchase. Reframe Your Thinking – Leave a Legacy, Not Just an Inheritance

The Seattle Pacific Foundation cordially invites you to attend our fall seminar, "Reframe Your Thinking – Leave a Legacy, Not Just an Inheritance," on Thursday, October 30, 7-8:30 p.m. in Upper Gwinn Commons. Hear what estate planning attorney Bruce Bickel has to say about legacy planning. A popular and entertaining speaker, Bruce will suggest ways to help the younger generation learn the character, principles, and values appropriate to handle their inheritance. How much is too much? Long-Term Care Insurance Enrollment and Guaranteed Issue

Studies show that 40 percent of those receiving long-term care are working-age adults. Interested in learning more about how to protect yourself? Consider locking in a long-term care insurance policy and rate. Eligible employees are those who work a minimum of 20 hours per week. In addition, if you were hired between 11/1/2007 and 10/31/2008, a guaranteed issue long-term care policy may be granted without completion of a medical questionnaire. A spouse, adult children, siblings, parents, and grandparents (including in-laws) of eligible employees may also apply for insurance with completion of a medical questionnaire. If you would like to learn more about this voluntary benefit, come to an informational meeting on Tuesday, November 4, at 1 p.m. or 5:15 p.m. in the Library Seminar Room. Faculty/Staff Volleyball Resumes

If the Olympic Games didn't inspire you to rediscover your inner athlete, perhaps a simple invitation will. Please come to the lower gym on Tuesdays, noon to 1:30 p.m. for faculty and staff volleyball. This is a great way to meet others from around campus while improving your bump, set, and spike – and maybe your waistline, too. If you haven't played in a while you are in luck. Neither have we! We've been on an all-star break (or maybe just a bye) for the last 18 months! Thalia Symphony Concert October 24

SPU's orchestra-in-residence, Thalia Symphony, presents a concert titled “French Cooking" on Friday, October 24, at 7:30 p.m. at First Free Methodist Church. The concert will be directed by Professor of Music Eric Hanson, and will feature Lamb's “Our Time Is Now," Dukas's “Sorcerer's Apprentice," and Magnard's Symphony No. 3. Tickets are $15 for adults, and $10 for students and seniors. For more information, call 206-281-2205.




The Sacred Sounds of Christmas November 30

Begin the Advent season with SPU's ninth annual Sacred Sounds of Christmas concert Sunday, November 30, in Benaroya Hall. Featuring SPU's nationally acclaimed Concert Choir, Wind Symphony, and other groups, this stirring performance of music and narrative tells the story of God's promise of a Savior, and the fulfillment of that promise in the birth of Jesus. This year, by popular demand, a second performance has been added. Reserved seating is $17 and $20; tickets are available through Ticketmaster at 206-292-ARTS or www.ticketmaster.com, or in person (cash and checks only) at the Benaroya Hall Box Office. Faculty, Staff Invited to Donate to Date Auction

Date Auction is an event put together by the Student Union Board (STUB) every year to raise money for a local charity as well as SPU's SPRINT program. Contrary to popular belief, the Date Auction does not auction people as dates, but auctions entertaining packages for students to experience together with friends. STUB also holds a silent auction in which students bid on items of interest. This year's Date Auction is Friday, November 7, and will also include a dessert auction. This year's charity is Urban Impact, a non-profit organization based in Seattle's Rainier Valley. Urban Impact offers after-school tutoring programs for struggling students, an affordable health and fitness club, and several other ministries serving the local community.

STUB would like to invite faculty and staff to be a part of donating toward the Date Auction. Perhaps you have a passion for boating or enjoy cooking and baking for others? Maybe you are a movie buff or have extra tickets to the Seahawks, Mariners, or Seattle Sounders? We would love the SPU faculty and staff to help STUB out by getting involved and being creative by thinking outside of the box! Associate Vice President of Student Life Jeff Jordan is a prime example of an appreciated donor. Last year, he rented a big screen television and hosted a Super Bowl Party for 20 students. Donations need to include the name of the activity, time, date, place, and number of students (at least two or more). STUB would also welcome any donations for the Silent Auction, such as gift cards, theme baskets, movie passes, or donations for the Dessert Auction. Medina Lectures on “Parenting With the Brain in Mind"

SPU Director of the Brain Center for Applied Learning Research John Medina will give two lectures about early childhood development and learning as part of University Presbyterian Church's "Parents Learning Together" series. The last lecture is October 22 at University Presbyterian Church, located at 4540 15th Avenue NE, 7-8:30 p.m. His lectures focus on what parents should know about their children's development and learning. Medina is a developmental molecular biologist and the author of Brain Rules.




Stationery Deliveries This Week

The owners of Vision Press, the printing company responsible for SPU stationery products, were on vacation October 9-October 17. Orders that were processed on Tuesday, October 7, and approved by noon on Wednesday, October 8, will be delivered Monday, October 20. Orders placed by Tuesday, October 14, will be processed and delivered with the orders processed Tuesday, October 21.

The "Milestones" section of the Fac/Staff Bulletin is a way to celebrate personal news of interest to the SPU community. Items such as births, anniversaries, church service, mission trips, marriages, adoptions, awards, or athletic accomplishments are welcome. (Or anything else you'd like the whole campus to know!) Baah's Presents at Two Conferences

Professor of Spanish Robert Baah gave two presentations at the University of Nebraska in Omaha, October 2-4. The first presentation, which examined Miguel de Unamuno's novel Saint Emmanuel the Good, Martyr in light of Emmanuel Levinas' theory of ethical responsibility, was given at the European Studies Conference. The role of remembering and forgetting in Gabriel Garcia Marquez's novel Love in the Time of Cholera was the topic of the second presentation given at the Global Studies Conference.




Steele Facilitates Workshop

On October 11, Professor of Theology Rick Steele facilitated an all-day workshop for the Department of Religion of Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington. The workshop was sponsored by the Wabash Center for Teaching and Learning in Theology and Religion. Several years ago, the Wabash Center funded a major study on the art of teaching undergraduate introductory religion courses. Dr. Barbara Walvoord, a leader in American higher education, was the principle investigator. Sixty-six faculty across the nation participated in the study, including three from SPU: Professor of Christian Scriptures Rob Wall, Professor of Theological Studies Priscilla Pope-Levison, and Rick. As a follow-up to the study, a number of participating faculty were trained to lead workshops around the country. (Rick and Priscilla will co-facilitate a similar workshop for the SPU School of Theology on December 9.)
