|Autumn Quarter Grades Due Dec. 17|
Autumn Quarter grades are due in Student Academic Services (SAS) by 4:30 p.m. on
Monday, December 17. Grades may be submitted to SAS via the web, in person, placed
in the SAS drop box (located outside of Demaray Hall 151), mailed, or faxed to
206-281-2669. Timely submission of grades helps students and offices with important
processes such as the academic dismissal process, disbursing financial aid, and
processing enrollment verification. If instructors want grades to appear on the
web before December 17, they need to contact Coordinator of Student Records Kelli
Knapp at firstname.lastname@example.org so she can roll the grades to academic history. If there
are challenges when grading students, please contact SAS prior to the
grading deadline. We may be able to assist with resolving the situation. If you
have questions concerning grading or meeting the University deadline, contact

|Festival of Lessons and Carols Chapel|
SPU's annual chapel titled “Festival of Lessons and Carols" is Tuesday, December 4, at 9:30 a.m. in First Free Methodist Church. This chapel is a unique adaptation of the annual service from the Chapel of King's College in Cambridge, England.
|Student Art on Campus|
Students in Art 1203 3-D design class have been working on a final project to take a small object and make it large, or a large object and make it small using cardboard, wood, insulation foam, paper mache', wire, etc. The purpose is to enhance the meaning of the object by its placement in a context that might inform the reading of that object. Projects will be located around campus, including three in or near the Library, Martin Square, Emerson Lobby, Peterson Hall, and Tiffany Loop. The pieces will be up from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Tuesday, December 4.
|Camp Casey House Rentals|
All house rental reservations at Camp Casey for February 1 through mid-June have
been assigned. If you did not get an email with an offer to stay at Camp Casey's
faculty house, then you are on the wait list. When cancellations occur, you will
receive a group email. The first person to respond gets the reservation. If you have any questions, contact Maralie Johnson at the Camp Casey Conference Center at firstname.lastname@example.org.
|Mileage Rate Increase in 2008|
The IRS announced that they will be increasing the standard business mileage rate for reimbursing business travel expenses beginning January 1, 2008. The new rate for 2008 will be 50.5 cents/mile, which is 2 cents more than the 2007 rate of 48.5 cents/mile. |PDAs, Cell Phones, and Data Breaches|
SPU faculty and staff should be aware of the risks involved with storing sensitive information on increasingly popular cell/data phones and PDAs. These mobile devices pose a significant security risk because they offer very little protection of data in the event of theft or loss. A few guidelines will go a long way in mitigating the risk these devices pose. (1) Do not store sensitive personal information (for you or anyone else) on your mobile device; (2) Password protect your device to prevent unauthorized use; and (3) Avoid sending sensitive personal information via email messages or attachments. The SPU Concert Choir and Chamber Singers will tour Eastern Washington and surrounding areas during Spring Break, March 15-18, 2008. The choirs are now arranging bookings for their tour. |New Hospital Sketches on Display at Art Center Gallery|
Local artist Craig Rizzo's latest work is now on display in an art show titled “Chapel: Process Sketches, St. Anthony Hospital" at the SPU Art Gallery. The exhibition includes development sketches (ink and pencil on tracing paper) for the chapel in the new St. Anthony Hospital in Gig Harbor, Washington, which will open in early 2009. The chapel will be nestled in a wooded hillside overlooking adjacent waterways, with references to native natural context and subtle references to the maritime. Originally from Los Angeles, Rizzo recently relocated to the Seattle area from Phoenix, and works for a local architectural office. The show will run until December 7. The SPU Art Center Gallery is located at 3 West Cremona Street. The gallery is open Monday-Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 206-281-2079.
|Staff Bible Study|
Discover what it means to be a grace-filled person in the workplace, in your home, and beyond. Staff Council member Deb Nondorf from the Office of University Ministries is leading a weekly Bible study for SPU staff members this quarter. Using The Companions in Christ series, Deb is focusing on the book The Way of Grace, which looks at eight biblical characters who discover God's grace through their encounters with Jesus. The Bible study meets on Wednesdays, 12-1 p.m. in Bertona classroom #5. If you have questions, contact Deb at firstname.lastname@example.org.

|Bret Lott Joins the Faculty of MFA Program|
We are delighted to announce that Bret Lott is joining the creative writing faculty of SPU's MFA program. Lott will serve the SPU MFA core faculty in fiction beginning Winter Quarter. He is the author of 11 books, most recently the story collection The Difference Between Women and Men, the nonfiction book Before We Get Started: A Practical Memoir of the Writer's Life, and the novel A Song I Knew by Heart. He is also the author of the best-selling novel Jewel, which was selected for Oprah's book club in 1999. Lott has taught in the MFA programs at Bennington and Vermont College, and is the former editor of The Southern Review. Welcome, Bret!
|Wolfe Co-Edits Book on Christmas|
Writer in Residence and Image editor Gregory Wolfe has co-edited a newly released book titled God With Us: Rediscovering the Meaning of Christmas (Paraclete). The book contains meditations for the seasons of Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany by some of the leading spiritual writers of our time, including Eugene Peterson, Kathleen Norris, Luci Shaw, Scott Cairns, Richard John Neuhaus, and Emilie Griffin. It is available from the Image office in Marston Hall or the Image website.
|Holmes Presents at NASM|
Professor of Music Education Ramona Holmes was invited to be on a panel titled "Successful Collaborations With Schools of Education" at the National Association of Schools of Music conference in Salt Lake City, Utah, on November 19. The invitation came in part due to the commendations for collaboration received by SPU's School of Education (SOE) from their accrediting organization, NCATE. The presentation highlighted several innovative programs built on SOE's encouragement of cooperative work. Holmes also moderated the "Women Executives Roundtable" with a series of questions by decade that she borrowed from School of Health Science Dean Lucille Kelley.

Associate Professor of Clinical Psychology, Marcia Webb and colleagues recently published a manuscript in the Journal of Social Psychology. The article was titled "Dispositional Forgiveness and Adult Attachment Styles."
