SPU Music Faculty Showcase Baroque Music

Enjoy a special evening of baroque music played on baroque instruments by SPU music faculty on Tuesday, April 5, at 7:30 p.m. at First Free Methodist Church. Performers include Meg Brennard (cello), Brian Chin (trumpet), James Denman (harpsichord), Catherine Haight (soprano), Kim Zabelle (violin), and the Seattle Trumpet Consort. This event is free and open to the public.




Thalia Symphony Performs Twice This Weekend

Thalia Symphony, orchestra-in-residence at SPU, will perform a concert on Friday, April 8, at 7:30 p.m. at First Free Methodist Church, adjacent to the SPU campus. They will also perform Saturday, April 9, at 7:30 p.m. at the Rainier Beach Performing Arts Center, 8815 Seward Park in Seattle. General admission is $12, and $8 for students and seniors. This concert's theme is “Music for Heroes" and highlights include pianist George Fiore playing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 “Emperor," and SPU's Minister of Worship Stephen Newby narrating Aaron Copland's “Lincoln Portrait." Annual Image SPU Film Festival

The fourth annual Image / SPU Film Festival will be held on campus April 8-10. This year's theme is “The Bread of Angels: A Taste for Film and Food." The five films that will be screened are “Babette's Feast," “Tampopo," “Big Night," “Garlic Is as God as Ten Mothers," and “Eat Drink Man Woman." All screenings will be followed by panel discussions with SPU faculty, students, and staff. Refreshments will be provided. Does Darwinism Devalue Human Life?

Join California State University historian Richard Weikart as he addresses this provocative question in a lecture based on his recent book, From Darwin to Hitler: Evolutionary Ethics, Eugenics, and Racism in Germany. Dr. Weikart will examine the role played by Darwinism in Germany in the rise of eugenics, euthanasia, infanticide, and racial extermination. The lecture will take place on Thursday, April 7, at 7:30 p.m. in Demaray Hall 150. This event is sponsored by the Department of Political Science and Geography as part of its "Science and Public Policy" lecture series. CFE credit is available.




Nominations for President's Awards for Excellence

The 2005 President's Awards for Excellence will recognize one faculty member and one staff member who have shown exceptional commitment to SPU's mission this year. President Eaton will announce the recipients at the annual President's Recognition Chapel on Tuesday, May 3, in Brougham Pavilion. Each recipient will receive a $1,000 check as a tangible expression of recognition and gratitude for their significant achievements and service to SPU. Service Learning Scholarships Available

Scholarships are available for undergraduate and graduate students involved in service learning or other volunteer work within the United States. Students should visit the “Students in Service" (SIS) Web site at http://www.studentsinservice.org/home.html and complete the preservice orientation to see if their volunteer work meets the scholarship guidelines. Assistant Professor of School Counseling Cher Edwards is facilitating a “Students in Service" scholarship orientation on April 13 at 3 p.m. in Peterson Hall, Room 303. Students may contact Cher directly for more information at (206) 281-2286. Due to the response to the initial scholarships, AmeriCorps SIS program has more than doubled the scholarships allotted to SPU. The more scholarships we use, the more we will be allotted. Please tell your students about this wonderful opportunity for student scholarship.

As part of the Student Employee Celebration on April 27, student employees will be recognized for their hard work and unique contributions to the SPU campus. “First Thursday" Monthly Luncheon: C.S. Lewis and “The Kilns" Restoration

SPU's Staff Council hosts monthly luncheons for faculty and staff to hear interesting speakers and get to know each other. This month, Fine Arts Marketing Associate Kim Gilnett will present pictures and tell of his experience restoring the home of author C.S. Lewis in Oxford. Drawing from old photos and personal interviews with living contemporaries of Lewis, Gilnett and Professor of Theatre Don Yanik helped restore “The Kilns" back to its original setting and bring it alive with the Lewis' personality. The luncheon is Thursday, April 7, at 11:45 a.m. in the Lake Union Room in Gwinn Commons. Buy your lunch in the main dining hall and join us in the Lake Union Room, located in the northwest corner. There is limited seating, so come early. No registration is required.




Tell Your Students About Financial Life 101

Student Financial Services is sponsoring a basic financial management session for students on Tuesday, April 5, at 1 p.m. in the Library Seminar Room. This free session will cover how to manage credit wisely, how different banking accounts work, and how to create a budget as a college student. This is a great resource for students who have questions about money management.




Tell Your Students About the Majors Fair

The “Majors Fair" is an excellent chance for students to explore majors and career interests and talk with professors. Please encourage your students to attend the Majors Fair Thursday, April 7, from 10 a.m.–1 p.m. in Upper Gwinn. “Networking With Integrity and Ease" is a workshop for students as part of the Career Development Center's “SpringBoard: Explore Your Major, Vocation, and Career." Nominate a Student for the Barnabas Scholarship

Do you know a student who demonstrates Christian character, has made a commitment to on- or off-campus service, shows a willingness to take on tasks regardless of recognition or challenge, demonstrates leadership, and will be a senior during the 2005-06 school year? If so, we encourage you to nominate this student or students for the Barnabas Servant Leadership Scholarship. Recipients of the scholarship receive a $750 cash grant and a contribution of $250 given in the name of the recipient to a charity of his or her choice. Online nominations are due by April 22 and can be found on the Office of Campus Ministries home page. More




Climb Mt. Rainier and Support Students

The SPU Society of Fellows is sponsoring “Summit Challenge 2005," offering a chance to climb Mt. Rainier in Washington state while raising money for student scholarships. Climbers will scale Mt. Rainier, June 18-19, and be guided by Rainier Mountaineering Inc. (RMI) on the Disappointment Cleaver route from Camp Muir. Campus Compact Conference Coming Up in Portland

The eighth annual Campus Compact Continuums of Service conference, "Building Bridges: Values, Knowledge, and Skills for Vibrant Communities and Campuses," will welcome more than 500 colleagues to Portland, Oregon, April 11-13, 2005. SPU is a member of the Washington Campus Compact. Attendees from the Western Region and beyond will explore multiple perspectives on the relationships between higher education and communities, and the roles service-learning and civic engagement can play in invigorating them. The conference has become a national model for professional development among service-learning practitioners including faculty, administrators, students, and community partners. The conference provides practitioners opportunities to publicly present their work and network with service-learning professionals from the Campus Compact Western Region. Choose from more than 50 engaging concurrent sessions, including three strands: faculty roles and rewards, student leadership, and community partnerships. Faith and Mental Health Care

The School of Health Sciences and the School of Psychology, Family, and Community are sponsoring a half-day conference titled “Supporting the Mental Health of Youth and Families in the Community: The Interplay of Faith and Culture" on Tuesday, April 12. The conference is from 8 a.m.–12:30 p.m. in Upper Gwinn Commons. Panel sessions include “Meeting Mental Health Needs Within a Faith Community" and “Incorporating Spirituality and Faith Into Culturally-Based Care." The conference is part of SPU's Living Well Initiative, a multidisciplinary educational program addressing the needs of persons and families affected by severe and persistent mental health conditions. Ward Wins AACRAO Award

Janet Ward, associate vice president for information and data management, received the Elbert W. Ockerman State and Regional Professional Activity Award at the annual meeting of the American Associate of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO) on March 28 in New York City. This award recognizes up to three outstanding state and regional professional activities such as program sessions, projects, workshops, and publications. The award went to PACRAO (Pacific Association of College Registrars and Admissions Officers) for “The Writers Team." The team was conceived and executed several years ago by Janet as a way of engaging PACRAO members—especially those with public speaking anxiety or lacking resources to attend annual meetings—in development and publication of written professional development materials. Congratulations, Janet!




Grauf-Grounds Presents at Conference

Claudia Grauf-Grounds, associate professor and chair of the marriage and family therapy master's degree program, recently made a presentation at the 25th anniversary of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicines Conference on Families and Health at Amelia Island, Florida. Her topic was titled “Referral Patterns Between Family Physicians, Psychotherapists, and Clergy in Washington State." Claudia is also serving a four-year term on the steering committee for this conference.




Farewell Party for Sig Swanstrom

A farewell party for Society of Fellow's Director Sig Swanstrom will be held Tuesday, April 12, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in the Walls Advancement Center. Sig was recruited in 1999 to re-engineer The Society of Fellows organization. He is also an SPU alumnus, Class of 1973. His last day at SPU is April 15.

Parrott in Financial Times of London

Professor of Psychology Les Parrott was quoted in an article about the upcoming marriage of Prince Charles in the Financial Times of London on April 1. The article was titled “Saying ‘I do,' Part Two." Les was quoted extensively as were portions of his book, Saving Your Second Marriage Before It Starts.




West on PAX-TV April 9

Associate Professor of Political Science John West will debate Barry Lynn of Americans United for Separation of Church and State on the “Faith Under Fire" newstalk show with Lee Strobel. The show airs on PAX-TV on Saturday, April 9, at 10 p.m. PST. The topic is the teaching of evolution. More




SPU Alumnus Highlighted in Pacific Northwest Magazine

SPU alumnus Bob Ekblad is highlighted in the April 3 issue of The Seattle Times Pacific Northwest magazine. The ministries started by Bob and his wife, Gracie, provide services and counseling to thousands of migrants in Skagit County. Read the story online. More

Wetzel's New Baby Boy

Sara Wetzel, previous program coordinator for Disability Support Services and her husband, Nate, are proud to announce the birth of their son, Eli James Wetzel. Eli was born February 25 at 6:35 a.m. He was 8 pounds, 2 ounces, and 21 inches at birth. Welcome, Eli!
