AACSB "Maintenance of
Accreditation" Site Visit - Monday and Tuesday
Back in April 2000, the School of Business
and Economics first received accreditation by
AACSB International - The
Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business,
joining their elite group of accredited institutions. This week
marks the second major visit by representatives of AACSB
International. Three deans from across the country will be
meeting with our dean, faculty, staff, and with Dr. Eaton
and members of the SPU administration on Monday and Tuesday,
October 5-6.
This is a very
important next step in the history of SBE. We have been
working for the past five years to prepare for this particular
visit. SBE students may only notice that the McKenna
Lounge will be closed briefly for use by the visiting deans, but
be assured that important work will be done here in McKenna Hall
early this coming week.
 AUSBE
Sponsors First "Donuts with the Dean" Tomorrow
Unless you are scheduled to take the Math
Proficiency Exam in Otto Miller Hall on Thursday morning at 9:30
a.m., consider this your invitation to Donuts with the
Dean, a much more pleasant experience. SBE Dean
Jeff Van Duzer regularly meets with SBE undergraduates in this
unique (and tasty) venue. Join him and interested students
in the McKenna Conference Room, 2nd floor McKenna Hall,
9:30-10:20 a.m. on Thursday, October 1st. Pre-majors are
especially welcome.

Welcome Craig Nakagawa to our Quarterly
Dean's Speaker Series, October
26th
Our quarterly Dean's Speaker Series event
will be held on Monday, October 26th at
12:30 p.m.
in the Library Seminar Room. Our
featured speaker will be Craig Nakagawa. Craig co-founded
VillageReach in 2000 with Blaise Judja-Sato
with the vision of bringing essential health services to rural
Mozambique and beyond. Craig led the development of VidaGas, a
pioneering social business that provided an unconventional
solution to the infrastructure problems plaguing health centers
in rural Mozambique.
Currently, Craig is VillageReach’s Chief Financial Officer and
Director of Social Business. Craig is working to expand
VillageReach’s social business program by finding new
opportunities to launch social businesses as well as consulting
with existing companies who are expanding their operations to
serve "last mile" communities.
Craig has an MBA from the University of Chicago and a BA from
the Jackson School of International Studies at the University of
Washington. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and
previously worked at Lehman Brothers and Teledesic.
Come hear Craig's exciting story that shows how doing
good with the tools of business can be done. Get this

 Kiros
"Where Christians and Business Intersect"
Around the country there are many Christian business
groups. But there is one special one that meets right here
on the SPU campus. The Seattle branch of Kiros
holds its monthly breakfast meeting in Upper Gwinn Commons.
SPU students are invited to join Puget Sound area Christian
business professionals for a nice breakfast and a special
program, 7:00-9:00am. The next dates are
October 28 and
November 20. SBE faculty and staff often attend
and many have been invited speakers. A discount price of
$12 is available to students. All details are at

Advising and Registration
November and Winter
Registration are just a Month Away
The following notes were prepared for SBE
faculty advisors to share with their advisees. Here they
are,
well in advance, for those who like to plan ahead.
NON-SBE MAJORS:
If you have sophomore standing or higher and
are not planning to major in Business Administration,
Accounting, or Economics, you need to select another faculty
advisor in the area of your intended major. You can change your
advisor through Banner. Your new faculty advisor can assist you
with the registration process for next quarter.
BUSINESS, ACCOUNTING, and ECONOMICS
MAJORS: Review the following
catalog information to get an idea of the core courses for your
program (do note that if you have already been admitted to one
of SBE’s majors, you will be accountable to the requirements set
during the academic year you were admitted to the program).
Also, please review your graduation checklist in Banner to see
what common and exploratory curriculum classes you have taken,
and which ones you still need to take before graduation.
Then, jump to your appropriate class standing (below) for
specific advising tips.
Business:

FRESHMEN You need to plan
your schedule in such a way that makes you eligible to apply for
the major by January of next academic year. You will need
to have taken at least 15 credits within SBE (ACCT, ECN, BUS,
and MAT 2700), and you must have a minimum overall college GPA
of 2.70 and an SBE GPA of 2.70. Since we have a
competitive admission process, the minimum GPA is not a
guarantee admission. The higher your GPA, the more likely
it is that you will be admitted to SBE. Every class is
important so stay diligent in your studies.
SOPHOMORES (and JUNIORS not yet admitted
to SBE) If you are planning to major in Business
Administration, Economics, or Accounting, you should apply after
your grades have been posted in December (but no later than the
application deadline of January 20, 2010).
Since we are now using a single annual application date, it is
very important that you get your application in on time or you
will need to wait a whole year before applying again! Remember,
you need to have completed at least 15 SBE credits with at least
a 2.70 overall GPA as well as a 2.70 SBE GPA, in order to be
eligible to apply for one of the SBE majors.
When considering classes to take in SBE this
winter, you should be well on your way to completing our 2000
level courses (ECN 2101 and 2102, ACCT 2361 and 2362, BUS 2414,
BUS 2600, and MAT 2700). If you are a business-intended
major, you should also take BUS 2910 Internship and Career
Strategies sometime during your sophomore year (or as soon
as possible if you are a junior).
Some of you may be ready to take an upper
division SBE course this winter (if you’ve completed our 2000
level courses). As you will not yet be admitted to the major
when you register for classes, you will have “major
restrictions” on our upper division courses. You will need to
contact Elizabeth Gordon (Undergraduate Coordinator,
eg@spu.edu ), about getting the
major restrictions removed. She will verify that you are
on track to be admitted to the program and that you are ready to
move to the next level of courses, and remove the restriction
for you.
JUNIORS admitted to SBE
You should be on your way to completing
your 3000 level SBE courses, and finishing up your Exploratory
Curriculum requirements. Now would be a good time to also start
thinking about your final quarters at SPU, including which – if
any – concentration you would like to pursue. Start putting
together a prospective class list by quarter, from now through
your senior year.
SENIORS admitted to SBE
You should start wrapping up your
undergraduate career with our capstone courses, as well as your
concentration (or elective courses). If you are planning on
graduating in June, you may want to stop by the front desk and
ask Elizabeth Gordon to look over your file one last time. The
file will include a checklist of all the graduation requirements
and indicate any potential problem areas that may prevent you
from graduating on time. She can help you with a variety
of questions about our curriculum and requirements, so please
utilize her knowledge.
After you have considered your class options
for Winter quarter, please contact your faculty advisor for an
advising appointment. Please do this BEFORE registration week.

4th Annual
Social Venture Plan Competition Announced for April 2010
The
4rd Annual Social Venture Plan Competition (SVPC) will be held on April 14,
2010. Social ventures are enterprises that address two bottom
lines: financial and social. They respond to critical social
needs while providing sustainable funding. SVPC has proven to be
an excellent means of teaching our students how the tools of
business can be used to transform good intentions into specific
actions.
The SVPC information session
is now scheduled – we will be meeting at 3:00 p.m.
on Monday, November 2nd in the Library
Seminar Room. Any student who is considering
entering the SVPC or is required to enter the SVPC can and
should attend. Students looking to connect with other
potential teammates for projects might find this a good
networking event.

Due to space/time limitations, we are accepting a limited number
of applications each term. Last year, both Autumn and
Winter terms maxed out with several weeks left in the quarter.

Around SBE
New
Art in the McKenna
Computer Lab
Dr. David L.
McKenna, President of SPU (1968-1982),
has donated three special art pieces from his private collection
to hang in the computer lab that bears his name.
This summer, as we do each summer, one third of the lab
computers were replaced. Eighteen workstations
are available to students. Our lab hours are 10:30 a.m. to
9:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on
Friday. We are closed weekends and
holidays. Don't trudge off to Otto Miller Hall or stand
in line at the Library when the nicest little lab on campus is
right here in DLMH (David L. McKenna Hall).

Copies of FORTUNE Magazine are Free to You
Well, at least the first autumn
issues are free to you. Pick yours up in the
McKenna Lounge or foyer. But later editions will
be mailed to our seniors.
Reading periodicals like FORTUNE
and the Wall Street Journal, which is provided in our
McKenna Lounge each morning, is a great way to expand your
understanding about what's going on in the U.S. and
international world of commerce.

SBE Welcomes Dr. Daniel Osborn
Dan Osborn
completed his first two degrees at the University of Washington
including his B.S. in Industrial Engineering in 1991, and his
second two degrees were awarded by Stanford University,
including his
Ph.D. in Management Science & Engineering (Economics and Finance
emphasis)
in 2004. He joined Seattle Pacific University this summer and
teaches courses in strategic management, managerial economics,
and portfolio theory. Before joining the School of
Business and Economics faculty, he taught at both of his alma
maters. Prior to his academic career, he worked as engineer and
consultant in the telecommunications and forest products
industries. Welcome Dr. Osborn!
