Sharpen
Welcome to Sharpen!
Sharpen is a ministry for all SPU students that live off-campus or in the Campus Houses and Apartments (CHA). We exist to provide ways to meet and build relationships with other commuter students, whether that be around food, music, or serving the community. Our name is founded on Proverbs 27:17, “as iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” We believe that it is crucial to live intentionally in a Christ-like manor in order to be ‘sharpened’ and then spread that to others in the community.
We approach this goal in four specific ways:
Pre-Chapel Breakfast
A free breakfast held every Tuesday at 8:30am before the gather (Chapel) service. We meet in the Theology Graduate House at 303 W Dravus Street (kitty corner from First Free Methodist Church where Chapel is held). Any off-campus student is more than welcome to come for breakfast and then come to Chapel with us afterwards.
Commuter Lunches
The dates and times of our commuter lunches will be announced in the coming weeks. At this event, we provide a free Subway sandwich lunch for any commuter students who wish to join us! This is a time for students to run in on their way to class or to sit down and meet other commuter students and learn more about Sharpen.
ACE Monthly Meetings
With the goal of helping bridge the gap between the students at the ACE Language Academy and SPU students, Sharpen will work with First Free Methodist Church to provide a space for students of both schools to come together around food, music, games, etc. and learn more about each others' culture and way of life. We want to help make the initial connection but then have relationships built and maintained outside of these monthly meeting times.
Intentional Living Communities
This is a pilot program in which off-campus students living in a home with other SPU students are invited to live in a way that promotes intentionality in a daily walk with God, prayer, meeting weekly with others in the house, a monthly service project of the home's choosing, and a quarterly get together of all houses participating in the program.
If you would like to be involved in any of the programs mentioned above, please feel free to contact the Sharpen Coordinator, Desiree Friesen, at friesd1@spu.edu.
