Professor Castelo views his work as a vocation in service to the academy and to the church. His passion lies in creating links between received theological frameworks and more contemporary modes of reflection as well as emphasizing themes that have been marginalized or pushed to the periphery by the dominant voices of a given context. This methodology is reflective in his first major book, which deals with the issue of divine impassibility, and in other pieces that demonstrate a sensitivity to resist conceptual closure for the purpose of advocating the divine mystery in an apophatic manner.
Prior to coming to SPU, Dr. Castelo taught for three years at the Seminario Biblico Mexicano in Hermosillo, Mexico. He also taught in a number of other Latin American countries with the hope of theologically equipping both clergy and laity. Much of this work has included a critical and reflective reappropriation of Wesley's theology, particularly the theme of holiness, with the aim of theologically reinvigorating the life of the contemporary church.
Dr. Castelo views his pedagogical style largely as catechetical. He enjoys dialoging with students in a pastoral and reflective manner as well as teaching adult classes in churches throughout the Puget Sound area.
