ELEMENTARY CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Professional Quarter Prerequisites Classes/Credits
Foundations Quarter
  • Official admission to SPU
  • Sophomore standing (45 credits)
  • Cumulative 2.8 GPA or 3.0 GPA in last 30 credits
  • Start a file in the School of Education (Please contact the education office to obtain paperwork)
  • Approved general psychology or general sociology class with a grade of "C" or better
  • Post-bac students must pass the WEST-B and WEST-B PRIOR to beginning the program
  • EDU 2104 Intro. to Education - 2 cr.
  • EDU 2200 Foundations & Educational Psychology - 3 cr.
  • EDU 2300 Diversity & the Classroom - 3 cr.

(Must be taken concurrently)

METHODS AND SKILLS COURSES
A student must receive a grade of "C" or better in all methods and skills courses to be recommended for Certification.

EDSC 2566 Environmental Science - 5 cr.

(Prerequisite for EDSC 3200 / Meets Natural Sci .B)

MAT 2530 Survey of Mathematics I - 3 cr. AND MAT 2531 Survey of Mathematics II - 2 cr.

(Prerequisites for EDMA 3000 / Meets University Math Requirement)

EDU 3942 September Experience -1 cr. (To be taken in September after Foundations Quarter)

EDRD 2000 Reading I: Psychology of Reading - 3 cr.

(Prerequisite for EDRD 3200)

  • Successful completion of Foundations Quarter
  • Junior standing (90 credits)
  • Formal admission to the School of Education (see Catalog for details on the SOE application)
  • Cumulative 3.0 GPA or 3.3 in last 45 credits
  • EDSC 2566 & EDRD 2000
  • MAT 2530 & MAT 2531 with "C" grade or better
  • Passing scores on all parts of the WEST-B
  • Must have taken the WEST-E Test
  • Complete fingerprint clearance
  • EDU 3200 General Methods I:Classroom Management - 1 cr.
  • EDRD 3200 Reading II: Reading Methods - 2 cr.
  • EDMA 3000 Math Methods I - 2 cr.
  • EDSC 3200 Social Studies/Science Methods - 1 cr.
  • EDU 3105 Lab. Field Experience - 3 cr.

(Must be taken concurrently)

Integrated Quarter
  • Successful completion of Methods Quarter
  • Maintain a 3.0 GPA following Methods Quarter
  • Complete 15 upper division credits in major
  • Participate in an internship placement interview with the internship placement director
  • Senior standing (135 credits)
  • Passing score on the WEST-E Test
  • Current fingerprint clearance
  • EDU 4200 General Methods II: Strategies for Diverse Learners - 1 cr.
  • EDRD 4200 Interventions for Struggling Readers - 2 cr.
  • EDMA 4000 Math Methods II - 2 cr.
  • EDSC 4200 Social Studies/Science/Health Methods - 3 cr.
  • EDU 4941 Elementary Internship A - 10 cr. (A grade of "B" or better is required)

(Must be taken concurrently)

Internship Quarter
  • Successful completion of Integrated Quarter

 

  • EDU 4942 Elem. Internship B - 15 cr. (A grade of "B" or better is required)
  • EDU 4899 Teacher as Person - 2 cr.
  • EDTC 4236** Educational Technology - 1 cr.
