The Visual Communication major teaches students how to research, evaluate, interpret, translate, and construct messages into visual forms used by an intended audience and distributed through a variety of media. The curriculum helps students navigate interdisciplinary teams that consider human centered experiences and ethical consequences of design related decisions. The curriculum provides students with empathetic methodologies and frameworks for interaction and information experiences.


Who the program is for

The Visual Communication major focuses on the exploration of creative solutions in communication using digital media processes, typography, form development, and information design with print, motion, UI/UX, and time–based media. Through the Visual Communication major, students will become trained, competent designers educated in traditional and contemporary media and grounded by historical and cultural knowledge. It follows a specific track of courses designed to prepare you for a career in UI/UX, Visual, Graphic, Motion, Product, Environmental, Information and Brand Design. SPU Vis Com alums have gone on to graduate studies in design or work for large corporations, non-profits, government agencies and small businesses. Visual Communication majors are agile professionals working in a creative digital marketplace.

Visual Communication (BA)
