Faculty can earn micro-credential in “Belong”

SPU is a proud inaugural member of “Belong,” a network of private independent colleges and universities, developed by the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) and the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE). We joined this network to share resources, ideas, and professional development with other small, private institutions, especially around Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity. We want every student, staff, and faculty member to feel a sense of belonging, both in classes and across campus.

There are several benefits to this membership, including the opportunity for six faculty and staff to earn a micro-credential titled “Fostering a Culture of Belonging.” This micro-credential equips participants with actionable practices that can be immediately implemented to contribute to whole-campus engagement in culture building as we strive to ensure all students and colleagues feel seen, heard, and valued.

This micro-credential was designed to support all employees, including leaders, faculty, and staff, and engage course-takers to:

  • Confront achievement gaps
  • Build rapport and trust through shared language and practice
  • Enhance daily interactions between students, faculty, and staff

Learning modules in this micro-credential include:

  • Managing the Impact of Biases
  • Reducing Microaggressions
  • Addressing Imposter Phenomenon and Stereotype Threat
  • Cultivating an Inclusive Environment

All faculty and staff are eligible to apply to earn ACUE’s “Fostering a Culture of Belonging” micro-credential by submitting the linked form below. Prior to submitting your application, please review the attached document that outlines the course logistics, time commitment, and course curriculum. Applicants are expected to discuss this opportunity with their supervisor and consider how this commitment will fit in with their work schedule. Applicants will be asked to upload a letter of support from their supervisor as part of the application process.

Application and Selection Process:
  • Interested faculty and staff are encouraged to apply by May 15, regardless of which course session they want to attend.
  • You can apply using the link here. There will be a series of questions for you to answer as well as a request to upload a letter of support from your supervisor.
  • Available course dates are offered at various times throughout the summer and fall. When you submit your application, please make sure to indicate which timeframe works best for you.
    • July 15- September 10
    • August 12 – October 8
    • September 30 – November 26
    • October 21 – December 17
  • The selection process will be completed at the end of May. At that time, we will confirm your continued interest and your names will be submitted to ACUE, even for sessions that start later in the year. We want to submit our selection early as the Belong cohorts fill up on a first-come, first-serve basis.
