Meet the Dean: Rick Eigenbrood

Dean Rick Eigenbrood

As dean of the School of Education at Seattle Pacific University, I am privileged to interact with undergraduate and graduate students preparing to become teachers, school counselors, principals, superintendents, and other types of educators. They are people who are passionate about making a positive difference in the lives of learners and their families through education.

By helping to equip this caliber of educator, the School of Education is living out SPU's vision for engaging the culture and changing the world.

I used to be a high school special education teacher, so I've seen firsthand the influence professional educators can have in the lives of children, youth, and families. I am amazed when I still hear from former students who remember our time in the classroom and who want to tell me how that time changed their lives. It is even more rewarding for me to hear about the significant ways in which Seattle Pacific School of Education graduates have influenced and are influencing thousands upon thousands of students in our region and around the world.

I work with talented faculty and staff who, guided by faith, are dedicated to preparing the very best educators for both public and private schools. I am impressed by the strong and reflective teaching of School of Education faculty, their mentorship of students, and their engagement with schools and the community in research and outreach activities. With professionalism and personal attention, our staff guides students through day-to-day questions about subjects such as program planning, certification requirements, field experience placement, and financial aid. Together, faculty and staff focus on the professional and personal growth of our students, helping you to develop your calling as an educator.

Our God calls us to be the best educators possible. It is my prayer that my School of Education colleagues and I will be faithful in offering programs that will indeed "engage the culture and change the world" for the benefit of all learners, their families, and our community.
