As the administrative center of the Roman Catholic Church, the city of Rome boasts a wealth of eccleciastical architecture, including world-famous buildings like St. Peter's basilica in Vatican City. In this course, we'll learn to identify the major styles of Roman church architecture, acquire understanding of church decorative programs and their political meanings, and discover the history informing the evolution of the Roman church buildings from the simple basilicas of the Early Christian era to the Baroque fantasias of Rome's second Golden Age in the 16th century.
