Development
Program
The development
program described below was prepared to identify the new construction
and renovation needed to meet the university’s facility needs during
the next ten to fifteen years. The facility needs were initially identified
in a survey of faculty and staff conducted during 1996 and refined
during the development of this Facilities and Campus Framework Plan.
Facility needs to meet educational objectives have also been addressed
in the Education Plan, which identified the following as high priority
projects:
- Construct a
new science building
- Construct a
new fine arts center, including a concert hall
- Construct additional
residential spaces
- Develop a plan
for faculty and staff housing close to campus
- Build a chapel
as a central symbol of a worshipping community and a commitment
to faith and learning
- Renovate Gwinn
Commons and develop multi-purpose meeting space
- Develop additional
classroom space, including common classroom space and special gathering
space for blended intellectual/casual experiences
- Consider an
early commitment to build a swimming pool and other facility/space
needs to meet wellness/physical education/athletic objectives.
The projects contained
in the Development Plan address all of the space needs identified in
the Education Plan, plus others, including the needs for additional parking
and the replacement of existing space in obsolete and/or deteriorated
buildings (including Tiffany, Green, Marston, Watson, and Beegle Halls).
During the further development of the master plan and its implementation,
it is anticipated that many of the recommendations regarding project
size and phasing will be revised to reflect refinements in programming,
design, siting, funding availability and other factors, including enrollment
growth university-wide and in the various academic disciplines.
