The Fight Against Human Trafficking

Sue Ann Heutink
Sue Ann Heutink, Kolkata (Calcutta)

In 2010, I traveled overseas to Kolkata (Calcutta), India, to volunteer with the Emancipation Network. The Emancipation Network is an anti-slavery group that runs shelters and helps human trafficking victims train for and find jobs.

I'm an orphan myself, adopted at 4-years-old, so I was very affected by my interactions with the children in the shelters, all of whom were former slaves in the sex trade, domestic trade, and agricultural trade.

My interest in working in anti-human trafficking started simply but powerfully: hearing and seeing programs about it in radio and TV. I felt I had to do something.

Although I may never have the chance to return to India, I remain passionate about my involvement with the Emancipation Network.
