SPU assistant men's basketball coach Grant Leep and I are part of a male practice squad that helps Seattle's professional women's basketball team, the Seattle Storm, stay sharp for their tough 34-game WNBA season.
I'd been a member of SPU's 2000 team that went to the Division II Final Four and had also played professionally overseas. So when the Storm's director of basketball operations asked me and Grant to join this practice squad, we didn't hesitate.
Grant and I had played with, and against, some of the best college players and teams in the country, but working out with the Storm is a few notches above that. We have to play hard and play intense, or else Storm's players are going to expose every weakness we have. I'm thankful the Storm is using Royal Brougham as their practice headquarters — otherwise, I'd be working out by myself or be stuck to noon ball!
