Checked Your SPU Mailbox Lately?

You may have received an important email. But you won’t be able to read it.

Not unless you check your SPU email address.

There may be multiple messages right now in your SPU email account, waiting for you to discover them — messages about requirements, deadlines, and opportunities. “Email is the University's main avenue of communication with graduate students,” says Debbie Wysomerski, Associate Graduate Director for the School of Business and Economics. She explains that “professors rely on SPU email in order to connect with students.”

Neglecting your SPU email account may even cost you money. If you miss your bill, you might accrue late fees.

But some students ignore or forget about these accounts, and they’re left wondering why they missed out on significant details. You may have set up an email-forwarding mechanism through Banner, but that doesn’t mean your messages will reach you properly.

On Banner’s email forwarding page, which can be located by using the MARS menu in the Banner Information System, this caution is posted:

WARNING: This utility is not recommended for use by current SPU students, faculty or staff. Use of this utility will terminate your ability to receive email from within your SPU email account. If you have multiple email accounts and are a current student, faculty, or staff person, CIS strongly recommends that you make your SPU email account your primary source for electronic communication.

Why the warning? Two reasons.

  • Certain SPAM filters tend to block SPU email, so the messages never arrive at the forwarding address. Email accounts at Comcast or AT&T, for example, have spam blockers that deflect email from SPU. Similar problems have occurred with AOL.
  • It can be difficult for SPU staff to track students’ email addresses beyond their assigned SPU address. Miscommunication can lead to lost information, missed deadlines, and worse.

So, check your SPU email account. You might discover newsletters, updates, invitations, or other important bulletins from your program coordinators or even your fellow students. If you have any problems with your SPU email account, please contact CIS at (206) 281- 2982.
