There’s something for almost every appetite within walking distance of your classroom. From Frappucinos to fajitas, from sushi to Subway sandwiches, from barbecue-chicken pizza to hot breakfast sandwiches, you can find it in a flash on campus or just a couple of blocks away.

Falcon’s Landing and Academic Perks
Hours:
Monday–Thursday 8:30 a.m.–3 p.m. 7:30 a.m.–7 p.m. Friday 7:30 a.m.–6 p.m.
Weekends and Holidays Closed

In the Student Union Building, you’ll find Falcon’s Landing and an espresso cart called (appropriately) Academic Perks.

During the day, burgers, nachos, chicken and other hot meals are served at the 155 Grill. If you’re there early, you can enjoy a hot breakfast (8:00 a.m.–10:30 a.m.).

Sandwiches are assembled from fresh ingredients at the Falcon’s Deli. A local favorite is the Alexander (smoked turkey, black forest ham and dill havarti with all the trimmings, served on focaccia bread), but you can design your own from the menu of fresh meats, cheeses, breads and toppings.

While the cooks are putting together your order, you’ll have plenty of time to browse the bewildering selection of beverages and make a choice.

Academic Perks serves espresso until 7 p.m., and the “Good to Go” section stays open in the late afternoons and evenings until 8 p.m. with a variety of pre-packaged gourmet sandwiches, salads, treats and drinks.

With the large comfortable dining areas available in the Student Union Building, this is the perfect place to settle in for an evening of food and study, or a great place to stop for dessert before you head home.

OFF-CAMPUS: The Grinder
Hours:
Monday–Thursday 7 a.m.–3 p.m. Friday 7 a.m.–noon

Kristen Swanson is your hostess at The Grinder, a conveniently located espresso stand two blocks south of SPU, on the corner of Nickerson and Dravus. An SPU alum herself, Swanson has been at the coffee counter there providing great espresso, granitas, Italian sodas, teas and baked goods since 1994. She always greets customers with a smile, and is famous for remembering customers’ favorite drinks. (You usually get a small chocolate-covered bonus with your drink –– a nice touch.)

From May until September, on sunny days, there are chairs on the patio in front of the cart, providing a great place for students to sit and read or visit while they enjoy their hot or iced beverages.

Graduate student special: Through the end of the summer, The Grinder is offering $1.00 off all espresso drinks for SPU graduate students who show their student i.d. card.

Want your drink ready when you arrive? Give Kristen a call at 206/282-8323.

OFF-CAMPUS: Zeek’s Pizza

Hours:
Monday – Thursday 11 a.m.–10 p.m. Friday 11 a.m.–11 p.m.

Next to the Grinder, at 41 Dravus Street, Zeek’s Pizza has been serving up hot, tasty slices and full pies for students since 1994. Since its opening at this location, the popular restaurant has opened in other locations across the city. But this place is still as busy and popular as ever, featuring slices made-to-order all day long, as well as salads and a variety of beverages. Zeek’s is a great place to meet with friends. Some students actually study there.

Between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., you can get free breadsticks with any purchase of $5.00 or more.

Graduate student special: SPU students can take advantage of a special deal: Show your student i.d. card, and you can pick up a large one-topping pizza for $9.99.

OFF-CAMPUS: Espranto Deli

Hours: Weekdays 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m.

At 180 Nickerson Street, there’s the neighborhood’s best-kept dining secret: the Espranto Deli. This great lunch spot, which opened about a year ago, is located downstairs in the south building of Canal Place Office Park.

The Deli features espresso, sandwiches, soups and hot Middle Eastern meals. Head down the stairs to the restaurant’s quiet corner and you’ll be surprised by the smell of savory chicken, lamb, beef and turkey dishes.

Graduate student special: SPU students receive a 10% discount if they show their student i.d. card. Parking is available in the Canal Place Office Park lot.
