Elections, Public Service, and Questions of Faith
Hear three local and state officials talk about the relationship between
faith and public service: Metropolitan King County Council Representative
Kathy Lambert (R) on October 12; Washington State Representative and SPU

Norm Maleng (R) on October 26.

October 20
A Special Day Devoted to Reconciliation
Seattle Pacific University graduate students are invited to join the greater
Seattle community as SPU President Philip Eaton kicks off the first President's
Symposium for Engaging the Culture and Changing the World with a special
focus on racial reconciliation. Dr. John Perkins, a national and international
civil rights leader and partner with Seattle Pacific, will deliver the
keynote address "Christian Community Development and How it Contributes
to Racial Reconciliation." The event also marks the inauguration of the
John Perkins Center for Racial Reconciliation, Christian Community Development
and Leadership Training at SPU.
Following the address, Seattle Pacific will close its offices and cancel
afternoon classes for special student- and faculty-led sessions on reconciliation
as a part of the 2004 Day of Common Learning. The Seattle-area community
is invited to attend all of the day's events, which are free and open
to the public.

The Passion of Christ
Why is the Passion of Christ important to Christian life? SPU Professor
of Theological Studies Randy Maddox will deliver the annual Walls Lecture
"The Passion of Christ: A Wesleyan Perspective."

A Christian Response to Global Suffering
Co-sponsored by Seattle Pacific University and the Institute for Global
Engagement, the Brandywine Leadership Forum's theme "Global Suffering:
Our Christian Responsibility" will engage leaders in topics of developing
sustainable environments for religious freedom and engagement. Special
addresses will be given by Ambassador Robert Seiple, the first-ever ambassador-at-large
for International Religious Freedom and former president of World Vision;
John Medina, founding director of the Talaris Research Institute; and
SPU President Philip Eaton.

National Christian Multicultural Student Leader's Conference
SPU welcomes college students from all over the world as they gather to
examine what it means to live, study, and worship in a multicultural academic
community. The following two events are open to the public:
November 11, 7:30 p.m. Opening ceremony with Dr. Stephen Newby
and the SPU Gospel Choir, and the address "Who Is My Neighbor" by Dr.
Delia Nüesch-Olver, SPU associate professor of global and urban ministries.
November 12, 10:15 a.m. Praise and worship with Dr. Stephen
Newby and the SPU Gospel Choir. Keynote address -"The Spirit of Unity"-
by Reverend Alex Gee, pastor of Fountain of Life Family Worship Center
in Madison, Wisconsin, and president of Nehemiah Community Development
Corporation.

Searching for Extra-Terrestrial Life
As a part of the Seattle Initiative in Science and Religion Dialogue,
astronomer Dr. Grace Wolf-Chase will visit Seattle Pacific University
and deliver the lecture "The Search for Extra-Terrestrial Life: Reflections
on Current Science and Perennial Faith Issues." Wolf-Chase holds a joint
position as a research scientist and public educator at the University
of Chicago and the Adler Planetarium and Astronomy Museum.

Hosted by SPU students, "Tradition" is an annual outdoor Christmas celebration
