News From SPU Computer and Information Services

Acceptable Use Policies: Users of SPU information technology resources are expected to know and abide by the University’s “Acceptable Use Policies.” Become familiar with these expectations by visiting www.spu.edu/help/policies.html.

Anti-Virus Software: SPU has entered into a campus-wide software license agreement with Network Associates for the current academic year. All SPU students, faculty and staff are now licensed to use McAfee’s antivirus programs on their campus and home computers. The license covers McAfee VirusScan (for Windows) and Virex for Macintosh. Please visit www.spu.edu/help/mcafeelicense.asp for details on how to obtain your personal copy of the software.

MARS, E-mail and Other Computer Accounts:
As a student, an SPU e-mail account is automatically created for you. Go to the Computer Resources Menu (MARS) of Banner for information on all your computer accounts and initial, temporary passwords.

Microsoft Licensing Agreement: All of campus is licensed to use some of the latest software from Microsoft. Visit www.spu.edu/help/campuslicense.asp for more information.

NetStore: You can save files to a confidential network folder and access them from any connected computer. For details, visit www.spu.edu/help/networking/netstore.asp.

WebSpace: Are you interested in developing your own Web page? Details are available at www.spu.edu/help/webtools/webspace.asp.

A Note About Viruses: Viruses can be easily spread through email. To avoid infecting your computers and proliferating a harmful virus do not open e-mail from people that you do not know, and only open attachments that you are expecting.

A Note About SPAM: Unsolicited, often rude e-mail is on the increase. Though the solutions are not ideal, a few sensible practices will help keep unsolicited e-mail to a minimum:

  • Never reply to an unwanted e-mail; replying (or unsubscribing to something you’ve never subscribed to) only confirms your address.
  • Consider setting up Microsoft Outlook (included with Office XP) as your e-mail client, and from there set up rules and filters so that unwanted mail is automatically deleted.
