A Message From Les Steele

Dear Graduate Students,

I am excited to extend a warm welcome back to all returning graduate students and a warm welcome to all new graduate students. I hope this newsletter finds you settling in to your classes and new routine and that you are finding your courses invigorating and challenging.

These are unsettling times for us with concerns for the economy and the threat of terrorism ever on our minds. Some argue that this is not the time to focus on education; however, I believe just the opposite is true. These are the precise times that we should focus on thinking clearly and constructively about the future. We need to press our thinking and our doing towards a hopeful future.

Now is the time, through education, to engage the culture and change the world. Blessings to all of you as you move ahead this term.

Les Steele, Ph.D.
Vice President for Academic Affairs
Seattle Pacific University

FERPA and SPU: What You Should Know

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that limits access to the information students provide to the University. Student records are a necessary part of the educational process. At Seattle Pacific University we respect your right to privacy and take seriously our responsibility to safeguard the information you have entrusted to us. To learn more about FERPA, click on the above link.

Financial Aid Update
Seattle Pacific University will cut credit balance checks on or after the seventh day of each quarter. Resident students will be sent an e-mail when their check is ready to pick up in Student Financial Services and checks will be mailed to non-resident students. If a student wishes for Seattle Pacific to keep the credit balance on their student account to offset future charges, they must notify Student Financial Services before the seventh day of each quarter.

If a student wishes to obtain their credit balance earlier than the time specified above, the student, along with the presentation of an SPU ID card or other ID, must request withdrawals of credit balances from his or her account in writing. To allow adequate processing time, withdrawal of credit balances will take 24 hours from date of request.

Please include a student identification number and signature, and mail the balance withdrawal to SPU, Student Financial Services, 3307 Third Avenue West, Seattle, WA 98119, or fax the request to 206/281-2835.

Winter Quarter Early Registration
Early registration begins November 25, 2002, for Winter Quarter. This includes online registration. In order to participate, students must have their account balance paid in full. For questions about Web registration, please e-mail Student Academic Services at sasinfo@spu.edu.

Computer and Technology Updates
Follow the above link for updates from SPU on the technology issues of concern to your graduate experience.

Acceptable Use Policies: Users of SPU information technology resources are expected to know and abide by the University’s “Acceptable Use Policies.” Become familiar with these expectations by visiting www.spu.edu/help/policies.html.

Anti-Virus Software:
SPU has entered into a campus-wide software license agreement with Network Associates for the current academic year. All SPU students, faculty and staff are now licensed to use McAfee’s antivirus programs on their campus and home computers. The license covers McAfee VirusScan (for Windows) and Virex for Macintosh. Please visit www.spu.edu/help/mcafeelicense.asp for details on how to obtain your personal copy of the software.

MARS, E-mail and Other Computer Accounts: As a student, an SPU e-mail account is automatically created for you. Go to the Computer Resources Menu (MARS) of Banner for information on all your computer accounts and initial, temporary passwords.

Microsoft Licensing Agreement: All of campus is licensed to use some of the latest software from Microsoft. Visit www.spu.edu/help/campuslicense.asp for more information.

NetStore: You can save files to a confidential network folder and access them from any connected computer. For details, visit www.spu.edu/help/networking/netstore.asp.

WebSpace: Are you interested in developing your own Web page? Details are available at www.spu.edu/help/webtools/webspace.asp.

A Note About Viruses: Viruses and other yuck can be easily spread through email. To avoid infecting your computers and proliferating a harmful virus do not open e-mail from people that you do not know, and only open attachments that you are expecting.

A Note About SPAM: Unsolicited, often rude e-mail is on the increase. And while there are no ideal solutions, a few sensible practices will help keep unsolicited e-mail to a minimum:

  • Never reply to an unwanted e-mail; replying (or unsubscribing to something you’ve never subscribed to) only confirms your address.
  • Consider setting up Microsoft Outlook (included with Office XP) as your e-mail client, and from there set up rules and filters so that unwanted mail is automatically deleted.

Computer Help is Just a Click Away: Did you know that CIS’ primary technical support resource for students is available 24 hours a day? Jammed with tips, resources and FAQs. For more information, the CIS Help Pages are always there to help you visit www.spu.edu/help.
