ANNOUNCEMENTS

Employee Benefits Fair on September 18
If you have questions concerning SPU employee benefits, plan to attend the annual Employee Benefits Fair on Tuesday, September 18. The fair, sponsored by Human Resources, will be held in the Weter Student Lounge from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Meet the insurance and retirement program vendors and enter the door-prize drawings. Enjoy refreshments and pick up free gifts from the vendors. Door prizes include two grand prizes of $200 cash. For questions, contact the Office of Human Resources at (206) 281-2809.

Fac/Staff Bulletin Now Weekly
The Fac/Staff Bulletin will resume its weekly publications on Mondays. Deadlines are Thursdays at noon. Items may be submitted online by selecting the "submit bulletin items" on the Fac/Staff Bulletin main page. Pictures, either digital or print, are gladly accepted. We are always looking for professional news, announcements of campus-related events or news and media stories relating to our faculty and staff. There is also a section for personal milestones, including marriages, births, mission trips or athletic achievements. If you have any questions or comments, contact Tracy Cooper at tcooper@spu.edu.

Autumn 2001 Enrollment Update
The week of September 17 will be an active one for our community. We are anticipating 900 new undergraduate students to arrive on campus for Orientation on September 20, while 120 new graduate students and guests are expected at the first "Graduate and Evening Student Welcome Reception" to be held on September 18.

With last week's tragic events, the University informed deans, department heads and faculty about specific mechanisms in place to work with students who may choose to delay their arrival to SPU this fall, defer their enrollment to a future quarter or cancel their enrollment (not planning to attend in the future). If you hear from new or continuing undergraduates concerned about returning to campus due to the transportation slow-downs across the country, contact Ruth Adams at radams@spu.edu with the student's name and phone number. Student Academic Services will follow up with each student to help coordinate arrangements with housing, their instructors and Orientation (for new students). For graduate programs, it's anticipated out-of-the-area students will contact the program director or coordinator, who will then contact other offices.

The following report reflects enrollment through September 12. Undergraduate headcount includes registration in any undergraduate program:

Headcount Fall 2001 Fall 2000
Undergraduate 2,702 2,565
Post-Baccalaureate 48 66
Graduate 486 438
TOTAL: 3,236 3,069

SUMMER SPRINTERS Need One Hour of Your Time
Do you have one hour free sometime Autumn Quarter? If so, we would deeply appreciate your willingness to meet with a returning SPRINT member to debrief their experience (over coffee, lunch or just sharing pictures). We have teams returning from Ghana, Dominican Republic, Philadelphia, Venezuela, South Africa, China, Ireland, Costa Rica, Egypt and Haiti. They have worked with Bible translators, engineers, day camps, pilot missionaries, English camps, and in clinics and orphanages. Many of you have done this in the past. Our students are always so touched when SPU faculty and staff want to spend time hearing about their experiences. This is a vital part of their reacculturation and integration process. If you can help, call (206) 281-2458 or e-mail Tami Anderson Englehorn in Campus Ministries at tami@spu.edu.

SPU Classifieds Has a New Section
If you have something to sell, buy, trade or offer, check out the SPU Classifieds. The current categories include-general items for sale; vehicles; free items; ride-sharing; voluteer opportunities; apartments, houses and rooms; wanted housing and/or roommates; and lost and found. To submit an item or see what's available, visit the Classifieds at http://www.spu.edu/classifieds/Main.asp.

No More Parking in The Loop,Third Level of Dravus Open
The "faculty and staff" parking in The Loop has been changed to "Deliveries Only." As part of the Science Building Phase 1 plans, a loading zone will be built on the north side of the Student Union Building. This permit has not yet been obtained from the city of Seattle. Currently, no delievers can be made to Falcon's Landing or Mailing Services off of Bertona Street due to construction. All delivery vehicles are being redirected to The Loop to transact their business. To facilitate this, all other parking will be moved out of this area and the third level of the Dravus parking lot (third level from the bottom) will be opened up to faculty and staff parking this year instead of student resident parking.

Cadre Leaders Wanted
Cadres are an opportunity for faculty and staff to lead a group of students in a weekly small group. Some cadres explore specific issues or topics and the ways in which the Christian faith addresses them; others are Bible study and prayer groups. If you think you might like to lead a cadre this fall, please fill out the cadre proposal form that you received in campus mail or print it off the Web at www.spu.edu/depts/ocm. If you have any questions or would like to discuss this more, contact Tim Dearborn or Pam Christensen in the Office of Campus Ministries at (206) 281-2966. We need proposals by September 19, in order to publicize these to students.

Summer T-Shirt Sale
Here's the "Sale of the Summer!" Summer Institute T-shirts are available for the reduced price of $6. Sizes range from small to XXLarge. Come by Demaray 350 for a preview and make your purchase. For more information, contact Cindy Shannon at (206) 281-2374.

Staff Payroll Change?
The 15th of each month is the last day to make adjustments or additions to your staff payroll check. If you have any changes, call Lindsey Peterson at (206) 281-2533.

Make an Online Request for a House at Casey Next Year
Full-time faculty and staff members: October 1 is the deadline to submit an online request for a spring week or weekend in one of the Victorian-style officers' houses at SPU's historical beach property, Casey Conference Center, located on Whidbey Island. The turn-of-the-century houses -- once a part of the coastal military fortress known as Fort Casey -- are available for your personal vacation use for a nominal fee of only $35. The fee includes up to one week's rental of a house for you and your guests, use of the gym and access to other amenities at the conference center. Casey is a wonderful opportunity for your family and friends to enjoy a time away in the rural, historical beauty of Whidbey Island. Collect rocks on the beach, fly a kite, dine out and go shopping in Langley or Port Townsend. Casey is a great place for "R & R." To see photos, please visit the Casey Web page.

Requests are due by October 1 or the scheduling period between February 1-June 16, 2002. Request a house online or by sending an e-mail to eanema@spu.edu prior to October 1. Indicate three or more possible dates on your request. The results will be distributed by October 31. There will be no printed versions of the Casey Reservation forms sent in campus mail. If you have any questions, contact Elizabeth Anema, administrative assistant at the Casey Conference Center, at (425) 775-0775.

PACRAO Hosts Workshop at SPU
The Pacific Association of Collegiate Registrar's and Admissions Officers (PACRAO) Professional Development Committee will offer a workshop on Friday, September 28, from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at SPU. Maddox Preaches at North American Baptist Seminary
Randy Maddox, professor of Wesleyan theology, recently made a return visit to the North American Baptist Seminary (NABS) where he preached at the inaugural service installing G. Michael Hagan as president and Benjamin Leslie as academic dean. NABS, located in Sioux City, South Dakota, is collegially related to the University of Sioux Falls, a fellow Council of Christian Colleges and Universities institution.

SPU Peer Advisors Build a House
Forty-five PAs and 12 Residence Life staff donated a day of service on Saturday, September 8, to the Habitat for Humanity project at Snoqualmie Ridge as part of their training. They painted, put up trim, installed insulation and did other miscellaneous tasks. Many of the group worked side by side with the homeowners and had the opportunity to share a bit of SPU's vision. This is the first time PAs have volunteered for a service project during their training.
