ANNOUNCEMENTS

Image Conference Free to Faculty and Staff
The 2000 Image Conference, titled "Habitations of the Word: Art and the Spiritual Ecology of Place" is on campus October 19-22. The conference is presented in cooperation with Image Journal, The Conference on Christianity and Literature and SPU. Featured artists include Pulitzer Prize-winning author Oscar Hijuelos, new SPU Professor of Art Roger Feldman, SPU alum and author of The Message Eugene Peterson and Pacific Northwest Bookseller's Award winner David James Duncan, plus several other writers, composers and artists. SPU faculty and staff have complimentary admission to the conference. For a complete list of speakers and performers, visit the Web site at http://www.imagejournal.org/events.html

Phones, Food and Fun at the Phonathon
The University Fund's Phonathon 2000 is almost here! Volunteer your time alongside faculty emeriti Fan Gates and Don McNichols, co-chairs for Phonathon 2000. Join the team of alumni, faculty, staff and student callers and record keepers during the evenings of October 9-12 and October 16-19. We'll provide the training, the food and a great opportunity to reconnect with friends and alums as we gain critical support for SPU. Please contact Dean Carrell in the Office of Development at (206) 281-2083 or e-mail carrell@spu.edu. Thanks in advance for your support!

Weekly Time of Prayer
As the new school year begins, make plans to attend the 30-minute liturgical service of prayer and communion every Friday morning at 7:30 a.m. in Alexander Chapel. Faculty, staff and students are invited to come and pray for the SPU community and the world. "God will do nothing but in answer to prayer." John Wesley

Tutoring, Consulting Opportunities in Seattle
Volunteers are needed to help tutor inner-city high school students attending CRISTA's "Seattle Urban Academy." Anyone with interesting educational field-trip opportunities or interested in serving as a volunteer tutor this quarter is encouraged to contact SPU alum Sharon Okamoto '76 at (206) 723-0333 or smokamoto@aol.com. Additionally, the Society of Fellows is also sponsoring an experimental program offering free short-term business consulting to a few select inner-city businesses. Students, faculty, staff and Fellows who are interested in being involved should contact Sig Swanstrom at (206) 281-3518 or sig@spu.edu.

Reserve Media Equipment by October 2
The Computer and Information Systems (CIS) department adjusted its media program and policies over the summer. One of the changes immediately affecting faculty is the “two-week prioritization window” for reserving classroom media equipment. This two-week priority period ends Monday, October 2. Please consult your room assignments and then verify what equipment each room contains by going to the following Web page at http://www.spu.edu/help/mediaservices/classroom.html. If you have high-tech needs not met by your assigned room, first contact Melinda Grow at (206) 281-2635 to see if a room relocation is possible. After that, please send your reservation request to CIS at help@spu.edu or call the Help Desk at (206) 281-2982. For further information on our media program and policy changes, consult the CIS Web page at http://www.spu.edu/help/mediaservices/newpolicies.html.

Tell Your Evening Students about IDs
The Office of University Services will be open until 6:00 p.m. between Monday, October 2, and Thursday, October 5, so that evening students can get their SPU ID cards. These cards are used to access meal plans, check out materials from the library, and receive admission to, or discounts on, theatre or sporting events. Students not able to make it during the week are encouraged to go to University Services during regular office hours, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Last Chance for Extra Dishes
The Family and Consumer Science Food Labs are being cleaned out. China place settings, glass sets, some everyday dish sets, and odds and ends are available. Great for those who need a second set of dishes! The Dishware Sale will be Tuesday, October 3, from 1:00–2:00 p.m. on the ground floor of Peterson Hall in the Food Lab. If you have questions, contact Denise at (206) 281-2195.

Print Jobs Before October 6
On October 6, there will be changes with the equipment in the Printing and Mailing Office to better serve the campus needs. Although the staff will be able to do some printing on October 6, any large jobs will need to be taken off campus. Your help is appreciated in getting jobs needed on October 6 or October 9 to the Printing Office no later than Wednesday, October 4, at 5:00 p.m. This allows the jobs to be completed on campus rather than taking them off campus. If you have questions, please contact Kaleen Mahoney (206) 281-2663.

Pay for Parking Through Payroll by October 10
Please return your completed parking applications to the Safety and Security Office as soon as possible. If your application is received by October 10 and you've indicated payment through payroll deduction, the deduction will be withdrawn from the November 1 paycheck.

Falcon Athletics This Week
Visit the Falcon Athletics home page for the latest sports information.
Tuesday, October 3:Soccer vs No. 7-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills, Interbay Stadium, 7:00 p.m.
Friday, October 6:Volleyball vs Western New Mexico, Brougham Pavilion, 7:00 p.m.
Saturday, October 7:Volleyball vs Montana State Billings, Brougham Pavilion, 7:00 p.m.

Remember the Soccer Shuttle
Thanks to a shuttle service to and from Interbay Stadium, attending SPU home soccer games is both free and easy for students, faculty and staff. The campus community is encouraged to use this shuttle service since both on- and off-site parking is scarce at Interbay Stadium. As an added incentive, students, faculty and staff will be issued free tickets on board the shuttle. If they choose to drive themselves or find other means to Interbay, admission will cost $3. Regular general admission prices are $5. Shuttle service will begin approximately one hour before kick-off (most games begin at 7:00 p.m.) and buses will depart from the Ross parking lot across Third Avenue West from The Loop. All shuttle passengers should be prepared to show appropriate campus identification when boarding.

SPU Sports Schedules
Pick-up your fall sports pocket schedules this week at Unicom, the SPU Bookstore, Credit Union Northwest or the Athletic Department office in Brougham Pavilion. For all the latest Falcon news, bookmark The Falcons Online at www.spu.edu/falconsonline.
