ANNOUNCEMENTS

Deadline for Benefit Changes
October 16 is the deadline for making changes to your employee benefits. This is also the deadline for enrolling or re-enrolling in the health care or dependent care flexible spending accounts. You will not be able to make changes again to your insurance or the flexible spending accounts until next October unless you experience a life-changing event. Please note that you may make changes to your retirement plan contributions at any time during the year. For forms or additional information, please contact Jeanette Weber at (206) 281-2676 or the Office of Human Resources at (206) 281-2809.

C.S. Lewis Institute Lecture
"Restoring the Kilns," a C.S. Lewis Institute lecture with Don Yanik, professor of theatre, and Kim Gilnett, marketing associate with the Division of Fine Arts, will be held on Tuesday, October 17, at 7:30 p.m. in Demaray Hall 150. In 1930, C.S. Lewis and his brother Warren purchased a house outside of Oxford. Known as "the Kilns," the house and surrounding woods were to be home for Lewis for more than three decades. Come experience the story of this historic house and the man who lived there as Don and Kim discuss its ongoing restoration and provide audience members with a "virtual tour." Don designed the Kilns' restoration and Kim directs the restoration workers each summer. For more information, contact John West at (206) 281-2162 or jwest@spu.edu.The lecture is free and open to the public.

Walls Lecture on Thursday
The Office of the Provost announces the 2000 Paul T. Walls Lecture on Thursday, October 19, 9:30 a.m. at the First Free Methodist Church. Dr. Randy Maddox, Paul T. Walls Chair of Wesleyan Theology and professor of theology will deliver the lecture titled "John Wesley: Holistic Healer." The lecture weaves Randy's interest in Wesley studies with another of his interests--the science and religion dialogue. He has been devoting significant attention to John Wesley's engagement with the medical and physical sciences of the 18th century as part of his work as a research fellow in the John Templeton Oxford Seminar on Science and Christianity (sponsored through the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities). Randy gratefully acknowledges the contribution of this seminar to his presentation. All faculty and staff are encouraged to attend.

Yard Work Help?
Are you looking for a babysitter this weekend? How about someone to rake your leaves or clean your house? Does your child need a tutor or do you need someone to do some word processing for you? The new On-Call Job List is now available so that you can connect with students who want to do these tasks. The list contains students' names and phone numbers so you can contact them whenever you need extra help. To get your copy, contact Paula Nagel in Student Employment at pnagel@spu.edu or (206) 281-2471. Hours and pay rates are negotiated between you and the individual student. This is a great way to support SPU students in earning extra money while also getting the help you need.

Earn Some Extra Money
Are you a faculty or staff member who would like to make a few extra dollars? Join in supervising local high school students while they take their S.A.T. exams here at SPU. The exams occur about once per month on Saturdays and are given in Demaray Hall. They normally last from 7:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and room supervisors are paid $78 for their time. If you're interested, contact Paula Nagel, test site administrator, for more information. Call (206) 281-2471 or email pnagel@spu.edu.

Sponsor a Child
If you are currently sponsoring or would like to sponsor a child through Compassion International, World Vision or another agency, the women at G.L.O.W. (Giving Love Over the World) would like to know. We are a theme house that is encouraging the SPU community to sponsor kids through these organizations by providing resources to become sponsors and hosting activities such as letter writing or dessert parties at our house. Please contact the women at G.L.O.W. if you are a current sponsor or would like more information on how you or your department could become a sponsor. Call us at (206) 286-7296 or by email at lindmark@spu.edu, so we can keep you posted on future events!

Christian College Fair
The Seattle Christian College Fair will be held on Tuesday, October 24, at First Free Methodist Church from 6:00-7:00 p.m. Admissions professionals representing approximately 60 regional and national Christian colleges and universities will be at the fair to answer questions about Christian higher education. Ferreiro's Latest Article

Alberto Ferreiro, professor of European history, has published "The Fall of Simon Magus in Early Christian Commentary" in a Festcshrift to honor the career of Professor Domingo Ramos-Lisson of the University of Navarra in Pamplona, Spain. Ramos-Lisson is one of the foremost scholars of early Christianity and emeritus director of the Institute of Church History. This piece explores how the Greek and Latin fathers adapted a New Testament apocryphal story into their homiletical work to advance the Orthodox Catholic faith in opposition to heretical groups who would compromise the divinity and humanity of Christ. The article is one of six that will appear in print in the next year or two and fruit of Alberto's two-quarter sabbatical.
