ANNOUNCEMENTS

Environmental Politics
Doug Bandow of the Young America's Foundation will speak on environmental politics on Tuesday, May 8, at 7 p.m. in the SUB Fireside Room. Bandow is a senior fellow at the Cato Institute, nationally syndicated columnist, former editor of Inquiry magazine and former special assistant to President Reagan. He has written and edited several books, most notably on foreign affairs and Third World development, and has been published in leading newspapers such as The New York Times, Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post. The event is free and the room will be open for the lecture starting at 6:15 p.m. For more information, contact Amber Endres at aendres@spu.edu or Greg Piper at gpiper@spu.edu.

Flutissimo! in Concert
Flutissimo!, a 10-member flute choir now in its 21st year, presents its annual spring concert on Tuesday, May 15, at 7:30 p.m. in First Free Methodist Church. Their repertoire includes “Exultate Deo” by Palestrina, “Moderato” by Gieseking, “Sextet” by Doran, “Silver Celebration” by McMichael and “Kyrie” for flute choir and handbells by Hoover. Guest artist, Mime Emjoy Gavino, will join the choir for “Ball Game” by Wells.

Ken Foreman Track and Field Invitational
SPU's lone home track and field meet, the Ken Foreman Invitational, is Saturday, May 12, and you're invited to spend a day in the sun and perhaps pack a picnic while watching some of the top athletes in the nation. In addition to the Falcons, teams from throughout the Northwest are sending their top performers to Husky Stadium as a prelude to the NCAA Championships. All races and jumps will take place at Husky Stadium beginning at 10 a.m., with throwing events at Sealth Stadium in West Seattle. Admission is free.

Cars, Motor Homes Needed
During Memorial Day weekend, 60 SPU students will be traveling to Los Angeles for a service project. They are looking for anyone with cars or motor homes and are willing to drive. They will provide gas and food for those that volunteer to come. They also need CB radios and work supplies. If you can help, e-mail Brandon Wing at bwing@spu.edu.

Second Essence Unveiling
Celebrate campus talent! Second Essence is SPU's annual arts journal, with work by students, faculty, staff and alumni. It includes poetry and prose, color and black-and-white art, and a music CD. Second Essence's unveiling will take place on Monday, May 14, at 7:30 p.m. Join us in the Fine Center at First Free Methodist Church for a night of music, art and poetry by SPU's finest creative minds. Dessert will be served. For more information, contact Heather Eggen at heggen@spu.edu, or call (206) 281-2120.

Request a House at Casey Online!
Full-time faculty and staff members: Does staying in a 100-year-old Victorian- style former military officers’ house near the beach sound refreshing? If so, there’s a vacation spot calling your name -- Casey Conference Center. Celebrate your anniversary! Hike along the scenic Ebey’s Landing bluff trail and breath in the fresh air. Take a ferry ride to Port Townsend. Enjoy the beauty and historical atmosphere of Camp Casey. If you are assigned a weekend (according to the lottery-style drawing), get ready to invite some friends, bring your sleeping bags, walk on the beach, bicycle into Coupeville and much more.
Requests are due by June 1 for a weekend getaway in one of the officers’ houses at SPU’s Whidbey Island retreat center. The houses are available for your personal, recreational use if you are a full-time, regular faculty or staff member. The cost is $35 for a weekend for you and your guests. View some photos on the Web at http://www.spu.edu/depts/casey. The current scheduling period is for visits to Casey between September 20, 2001, and January 31, 2002. Request a house online at http://www.spu.edu/depts/casey/rentalpolicies.html prior to June 1. There will be no printed versions of the Casey Reservation forms sent in campus mail. Please request a house online.

Staff Payroll Changes?
The 15th of each month is the last day to make adjustments or additions to your staff payroll check.

Trivia Fans Unite
For a great night out, you can't beat the annual Washington Literacy Trivia Bee, May 23, 6:30-9:30 p.m. at the Town Hall in downtown Seattle. The SPU Dream Team of Academe (Eric Hanson, professor of music; Doug Downing, associate professor of economics; and former SPU staff member Tim Surdyk) are in the hunt for the traveling trophy of trivia. Last year the SPU team placed fourth in a field of 30. Hilarious emceeing by NPR's Bill Radke. Great food, silent auction and a good cause. Tickets are just $25 each, and can be reserved by calling (206) 284-4399, extension 115. Join the SPU contingent for a raucous evening of arcane chicanery!

Need Some Spring Cleaning Help?
SPRINT's Project WorkShare is a chance for mission team participants to raise support for their upcoming Summer Break trips. If you need help with your spring cleaning or yard work (or anything else), you can hire SPRINTers for a suggested donation of $12 per person per hour. Project WorkShare students will be available May 5 and May 19. Contact the SPRINT office at least one week in advance if you would like to hire students. Contact SPRINT Fundraising Coordinator Brian Larsen at (206) 286-6326, or e-mail blarsen@spu.edu.

SPRINT Fun Run Is May 12
The first SPRINT Fun Run will take place on Saturday, May 12, beginning in the Loop at 9 a.m. Runners, walkers, skaters and bikers will have the choice of two courses, from SPU to Gas Works Park or Husky Stadium. Prizes awarded for most money raised! All proceeds will benefit the SPRINT Endowment Fund. Look for more details on the Fun Run posters in the Student Union Building or call the SPRINT office at (206) 281-2491.
