Learn How You Can Work and Finish Your Degree
If you are a working adult, the degree completion program is ideal for you. Some of the benefits include:
-a high quality education with experienced professors
-classes that meet twice a week in the evening so you can work and finish your degree at the same time
-a sequential program that takes the hassle out of registering for classes
To learn more about how you can complete your degree in Organizational Behavior, come to the next Information Night on Monday, March 12, from 6-8:30 p.m. on the second floor of the SPU Library. You will have the opportunity to meet some of the professors, learn about the program, and have your questions answered. For more information, visit the Web site at http://www.spu.edu/depts/dcp/ and contact DCP Admissions Counselor Dave McReynolds at davmcr@spu.edu or call (206) 281-3506. If you would like your transcripts evaluated before the Information Night, be prepared to fax them in when you contact the DCP admissions counselor.

FACULTY/STAFF NEWS

Laurel Tindall's Brevat Rating
The Athletics Department is pleased to note that Laurel Tindall, head women's gymnastics coach, attained the highest honor that can be achieved internationally by gymnastics judges -- a Brevet rating -- at a recent course held by the Federation International of Gymnastics (FIG) in Indianapolis. An international course is held in many countries to recertify Brevets by FIG, and this was the only such opportunity in the United States this year. To attain this credential, Laurel scored better than 93 percent. It is her sixth similar achievement in the last 24 years! The judging expertise she brings to her head-coaching role is an important factor in the continued success of SPU gymnastics. Judges work harder when scoring SPU because they know she is rated higher than they are and will catch any error they make. Congratulations to Coach Tindall for achieving the highest level of gymnastics judging!

University Communications Wins CASE Awards
The Office of University Communications received four communications awards at the recent Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District VIII Conference in Victoria, B.C. Response won a Gold Medal for tabloids and the Grand Gold Award for the entire periodicals segment of the competition (i.e., best entry in all publications, periodicals, magazines, etc.). Grand Gold winners from six juried divisions competed for the Grand Crystal award, the highest award given at the conference. Congratulations to editor Jennifer Gilnett, designer Joel Ertsgaard, and UC writers Connie McDougall, Clint Kelly and Hope McPherson. Other awards included:
Gold Award in the "Informational Publications" category for the "Chapel Schedule and Poster" (Joel Ertsgaard, designer, and Tracy Cooper, coordinator).
Silver Award in the "Web Site Coordination" category for the "SPU Web Site" (The Webmaster Committee, including Tracy Cooper, Gerard Duguay, Tim Gatlin, Jennifer Gilnett, Dale Kegley, Don Kenney, Wendi Parriera, Phil Rand, Dave Tindall and David Wicks).
Bronze Award in the "Promotional Writing" category for the SPU Viewbook (Jennifer Gilnett and Hope McPherson, writers).

Carrell at CASE
Dean Carrell, associate director of development, recently participated as a committee member for the CASE District VIII annual conference held in Victoria, British Columbia. CASE (Council for Advancement and Support of Education) is an organization whose members are alumni, marketing, communication and development professionals from most U.S. and Canadian colleges and universities, as well as other international institutions. Dean acted as chair for the Signage and Decorations, Literature Exchange and the Career Centre committees.

He will start spring 2001 as a mathematics specialist. He will be working specifically with kindergarten, second and fifth grade teachers and their students at Thurgood Marshall Elementary School in Seattle to incorporate innovative learning technologies into a new mathematics curriculum.

Joireman and Alums Publish Article
The Department of Psychology is pleased to note that Jeff Joireman, assistant professor of psychology, and psychology alumni Chris Fick '00 and Jon Anderson '00 recently had their article, "Sensation Seeking and Involvement in Chess," accepted for publication in the research journal Personality and Individual Differences.
