Development,
Planned Giving Have New Home
The Office of Development and the Office of Major Gifts and Planned
Giving have moved into their new office space at 25 W. Nickerson, formerly
known as the Stearns Warehouse. The SPU Board of Trustees approved the
renaming of the Stearns Warehouse to the Walls Advancement Center, in
honor of Paul T. Walls who served SPU for 31 years as a member of the
Board of Trustees and 20 years as its chairman. The Office of Development
includes the Society of Fellows, Advancement Services, the University
Fund and telemarketing. John H. West, the new director of corporate
and foundation relations, has joined the development team. University
Archives will soon move in to the Walls Advancement Center as well.
Both departments would like to thank the entire facility management
team, especially Dave Church, executive director of facility management,
and Madge Sherman, associate director for project design, for their
creativity and hard work in converting a warehouse into a first-class
office building. It’s a building we can all be proud of. Stop by and
check it out. There will be a dedication of this space and an open house
in the fall.
Publicize
Your Upcoming Event Now
Now is a good time to publicize your upcoming event on the SPU home
page. Examples are upcoming 2001-2002 conferences, lectures, special
programs, guest artists or anything of interest to the SPU community
and general public. Send an e-mail to Tracy Cooper at tcooper@spu.edu
with the date, time, location, cost, Web site and other pertinent information,
as well as contact information. If you have questions, call Tracy at
(206) 281-2977.
Ride
the Bus For Free!
Flexpasses for July 1-June 30, 2002, are now available. If you are full-time
faculty or staff (.75 FTE), you are eligible to receive a Flexpass.
For those of you new to SPU, Flexpasses are purchased from Metro each
year and then provided to full-time faculty and staff at no charge.
Flexpasses may be used on buses anywhere that King County Metro and
Sound Transit travel. Please be sure to stop by the Office of Safety
and Security to pick up a Flexpass. If you have any questions about
this program, contact Yvonne Miller in Safety and Security at (206)
281-2922.
Churches
Near SPU
It's time to update the "Guide to Local Churches" produced by the Office
of Campus Ministries (OCM) for students. If you would like to make sure
your church is listed, visit the OCM Web site and click on the "Guide
to Area Churches" http://www.spu.edu/depts/campmin/. Please
e-mail Pam Christensen at pjchris@spu.edu
if your church is not listed or if the information listed is not correct.
Thank you for your assistance.
Updating
Your Voice Mail and E-Mail
Just a reminder that if you are out of your office for vacation or sick
leave, please update your voice message as a courtesy to on- and off-campus
callers. You can also program Microsoft Outlook to send an "Out of the
Office" e-mail for all incoming e-mails while you're away. To do this,
select the Tools menu in Outlook and then select "Out of Office" assistant.
Only
Eight Left
There are still some surplus Marston/Watson desks and dressers available
at no charge, on a first-come, first-served basis for faculty and staff
personal use. These small desks with drawers are perfect for kid's rooms.
They are located on the Fifth Avenue West streetscape. You need to arrange
for your own pick up and delivery. Please don't take the plywood, 2x4's,
4x4's or any other construction related materials. The construction
fencing is generally locked at night, so it is better to pickup any
items you want during the day.
SPU
Mug Giveaway
More than 400 SPU plastic mugs are available for free to any person
or department. If you, your department, church or organization would
like them, please contact Nathan Brouwer at brouwer@spu.edu.

Wall's
Daughter Selected Gates Scholar
Cara Wall, '00 SPU graduate and daughter of Rob Wall, professor of Christian
Scriptures, has been named a Gates Scholar at the University of Cambridge.
The Gates Cambridge Scholars program, established by the Bill and Melinda
Gates Foundation, hopes to create a network of future leaders from around
the world who will bring new vision and commitment to improving the
life circumstances of citizens in their respective countries. Over time,
it is anticipated that Gates Cambridge Scholars will become leaders
in helping to address global problems related to health, equity, technology
and learning -- all areas that the foundation is deeply engaged in.
Cara is one of 80 Americans selected. She will work toward her Ph.D.
at Cambridge in biological anthropology. Her parents and her faculty
friends at SPU are pretty pleased -- mostly for her but also for us!
