ANNOUNCEMENTS

C.S. Lewis Institute
As America faces the new millennium, the nation seems increasingly divided over moral and cultural issues. Can we find common ground to overcome our divisions? Peter Kreeft thinks so, arguing that Protestants, Catholics, Jews and Muslims must join together in order to revive a dying culture. Hailed by Charles Colson as "one of the premier apologists in America today," Kreeft is a witty and incisive thinker in the tradition of C.S. Lewis and G.K. Chesterton. A professor of philosophy at Boston College, he has written more than 25 books. You won't want to miss Dr. Kreeft's two lectures on campus. The first, "How to Win the Culture War," is Monday, January 8, at 7:30 p.m. in Upper Gwinn. The second talk is part of the Staley Lecture series and will be given during Chapel on Tuesday, January 9, at 9:30 a.m. in First Free Methodist Church. Kreeft’s talks are part of the annual C.S. Lewis Institute lecture series. CFE credit is available for students. For more information, contact John West at (206) 281-2162 or jwest@spu.edu.

Winter 2001 Enrollment Update
As we begin the new quarter, early registration statistics suggest that SPU students are enrolling in greater numbers than last year at this time. Registration will continue through fifth day of the quarter (January 9) as students continue to register for classes, with most of the activity coming from our graduate and evening undergraduate students. A final update will be provided to the community after the 10th day.

Enrollment through the first day of Winter Quarter classes -- January 4.

Wanted: Peer Advisors
The Office of Residence Life is beginning the process of identifying and recruiting potential peer-advisor candidates for the 2001-2002 academic school year. We are looking for sophomores and juniors who demonstrate the following characteristics:

  • Evidence of a strong Christian faith
  • Commitment to academic excellence
  • Leadership skills
  • Positive communication and relational capabilities
  • Integrity
  • Acceptance of diversity

Please send your nominations for peer advisor to Erika Mariani in the Office of Residence Life via email at emariani@spu.edu, or leave voice mail at (206) 281-2099 by Friday, January 12. We will be sending invitation letters to those students nominated by January 15.

Offices Open Late
The Office of University Services will be open until 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 9, and Wednesday, January 10, for evening students to get their SPU ID cards. These cards are used to access meal plans, check out materials from the library and receive admission to and/or discounts on theatre or sporting events. Students not able to make it during this week are encouraged to go to University Services during regular office hours, 8:00 a.m.-- 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Creative Writer's Group Starting
Novelists, poets, short-story masters, dreamers, creative writers of all kinds and creeds, faculty, staff or students: I am building a creative writers' group for the SPU community and invite you to join us. One of the best ways to stimulate the writing spirit can be found in the company of other writers. Anyone flirting with the writing muse is welcome, whether you're knee-deep in a novel (as I am), caught up in a poetic whirlwind or just starting out. This informal group offers you a forum to try out your ideas, share your works in progress and learn a little more about the writing life (from idea to publication). Writers of all levels, genres and interests are very welcome. If you are looking for an open and stimulating literary environment, please join us. The first meeting is flexibly scheduled for 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 16, at my home at 109 West Bertona Street (the beautiful pink house between the Ross Commuter parking lot and the new Bertona classrooms on campus). If you would like to attend or have any questions or suggestions, please let me know (or stop by). I hope to see you there.
Tony Masinton, humanities program coordinator
For more information, e-mail me at amasinton@spu.edu or call (206) 281-2670.

Summer at Casey
Summer requests for a week at Casey are due February 1. All full-time, regular SPU faculty and staff will receive a reservation form in the inner-office mail. February 1 is the deadline to submit a request for a summer reservation in one of the Victorian-style officers' houses at SPU's historical beach property, Casey Conference Center, located on Whidbey Island. The turn-of-the-century houses--once a part of the coastal military fortress known as "Fort Casey"--are available for your personal vacation use for a nominal booking fee of only $100. The fee includes up to one week's rental of a house for you and your guests, use of the outdoor swimming pool and gym, and access to other amenities at the conference center. To see photos, please visit the Casey web page at http://www.spu.edu/depts/casey/.
Requests are currently being accepted for stays during the summer period of June 18 to September 16, 2001. You may submit your request via e-mail, fax or US mail. Indicate at least three possible vacation weeks on your request. The results will be distributed by February 28. Due to the high demand and the "point system" method, it is unlikely for any one faculty or staff person to be offered a summer reservation more frequently than every third summer. If you are offered a spot, it is a wonderful opportunity for your family and friends to enjoy an unforgettable week in the rural, historical beauty of Casey. Collect rocks on the beach, fly a kite, dine out, go shopping in Langley and relax at the swimming pool for hours. It's a great place to go for R & R. Once again, requests must be submitted by the February 1.

Talent Show tryouts are Tuesday, January 9, and Thursday, January 11, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Faculty and staff are encourage to audition. In this study, Rob defines and then illustrates from Acts a particular understanding of Scripture's intertextuality -- that is, a narrator's recourse to earlier texts that thicken meanings communicated to alert readers of his (inter)text. As always, off-prints are available from Rob to any who ask.
