Advent
Devotions: Cities of the Holy Land
Dean of the Chapel Tim Dearborn is leading a four-week Advent study
for faculty and staff titled "Walking With Followers of Christ Around
Bethlehem." The study will explore the biblical promises and contemporary
plight surrounding four cities of the Holy Land: Hebron, Ein Karem,
Beit Sahour and Bethlehem. Each devotion includes the city in Scripture,
reflection questions, the city now and then, and photos of historical
sites. The Advent devotions will be held Wednesday mornings from 8:30-9:00
a.m. in the SUB Fireside Room. Hot apple cider, tea and breakfast pastries
are provided. All faculty and staff are invited to join for a time of
singing carols, enjoying fellowship and celebrating the true meaning
of Christmas.

at the Art Center Gallery at 3 West Cremona. (Near the corner of Queen
Anne Avenue North and West Nickerson Street.) The classes for Winter
Quarter begin January 6 and run through March 3. The dates for Spring
Quarter are March 31- June 2. The classes are open to children ages
5-14 years; and the cost for the series is $55, which includes instruction
and materials. The classes emphasize expression through group and individual
activities. Students will be introduced to the elements and principals
of art through a variety of media. To register, call (206) 281-2079.
House
Near SPU for Sale
The Seattle Pacific Foundation has received a house through a planned
gift. The Foundation will be untaking preparations to sell the house
through a realtor in the near future. Prior to that, however, we want
to give notice to members of our community that this house will be offered
for sale. It is the home owned by Dr. Joe (now deceased) and Danna Davis,
longtime members and significant contributors to SPU in many ways. The
home is located only a few blocks from campus at 3420 10th Avenue West.
It is a spacious well-built, custom home with a fabulous view from many
rooms; 3,030 square feet (4 bedrooms, 2 3/4 baths, 2 fireplaces) and
attached single car garage. The home, built by a former lumberman in
1953, features quality woodwork throughout in cabinetry, paneling and
bookcases. The house is priced to sell at $665,000. Inquiries may be
directed to Nancy Christel, assistant director, Seattle Pacific Foundation
at (206) 281-2810 or nchriste@spu.edu.
Blankets
Needed
An article in The Seattle Times on Thanksgiving Day reported
that for the first time ever, the Union Gospel Mission's Nightwatch
Program had run out of blankets because of the early cold weather. The
Nightwatch program provides blankets, food and hot drinks for people
on the street. The program's executive director, the Reverend Rick Reynolds,
is an 1975 SPU alum. New or used blankets can be dropped off at the
Mission's men's shelter at 318 Second Avenue South, between Washington
and Main streets and Second and Third Avenues.
New
Year's Resolution: Exercise
Once again, senior exercise science majors are available on a limited
basis to provide a wide range of fitness and exercise services to the
SPU community. These services include assessment of a single aspect
of fitness, instruction on the use of a piece of SPU exercise equipment,
a complete fitness assessment, exercise prescription or personal training.

Ziemann
on German Authors
"Multicultural Authors in Germany: Jirî Grusa, Emine Sevgi Özdamar and
Rafik Schami" was the title of a paper offered by invitation by Michael
Ziemann, associate professor of European Studies (German and Linguistics)
this summer. The paper was part of the seventh bi-annual conference
of the International Society for the Study of European Ideas (ISSEI)
titled "Twentieth Century European Narratives" at Bergen University
in Bergen, Norway. His first ISSEI presentation was at Haifa University,
Mt. Carmel, Israel in 1998. His paper was titled "Multicultural Literature
in Germany-Through the Eyes of the Stranger" ("Fremde Augenblicke")
and is available on compact disc.
Owusu
Presents at UW
Francis Owusu, assistant professor of geography, participated in a symposium
last month organized by the University of Washington's Program on Africa
titled "The Politics and Culture of Structural Adjustments and the Impact
on Health in Africa." Francis' presentation was titled "How Ghana's
Health Care Workers Make a Living and Why it Leads to Low Productivity."
A lively discussion with faculty and students followed the presentation.
Capp
on Improvisations
Myrna Capp, assistant professor of music, presented a paper at the Society
for Ethnomusicology's national conference in Toronto, Canada last month.
The title of the paper and presentation was "Musical Hybrids: Improvisation
as a Link Between Musical Cultures." The process of improvising cross-culturally
was explored in the paper through the use of photos and musical examples.
The improvisations were done in 1999 by Myrna Capp and Ephat Mujuru
in Harare, Zimbabwe. The paper was one of four papers scheduled consecutively
in a session relating to cross-cultural improvisation. The other papers
focused on Ghanaian singing, African-American church music in New York
and South African choral music.

Woodward
Runs Half
Once again, as part of his PDP as SPU's faculty athletics representative,
Bill Woodward, Professor of History, completed albeit too painfully
and slowly the 13.1-mile Seattle Half Marathon on November 26. His finish
was 34th among his age (and aged) group. He will show you his finisher's
shirt much more readily than his time.
Cooper,
Kaups Not Far Behind
Tracy Cooper, news and media relations manager, and Karin Kaups, assistant
in University Relations and Enrollment Management, ran in their third
Seattle Half Marathon. Tracy and Karin, who didn't see Bill among the
10,000 runners, will gladly show you their finisher's medals.
