ANNOUNCEMENTS

Autumn 2001 Enrollment Update
The last summer Premiere held on August 17 was a resounding success. Faculty and staff met and registered 75 new students, bringing the total number of new students to 853. All signs continue to point toward meeting, or slightly exceeding, our undergraduate headcount goals for Autumn Quarter due to both strong continuing-student and new-student registration. Registration for graduate programs is on par with last year at this time. Many programs will see significant registration activity in September. The following headcount summary is a year-to-year comparison for all students registered for Autumn Quarter, including non-matriculated students.

Headcount 2001 2000
Undergraduates (all programs) 2656 2514
Post-Baccalaureates 44 57
Graduates 272 277
TOTAL 2,972 2,848 (+ 4.4%)

Thanks to the on-going collaborations among Academics, Admissions, Residence Life, Student Academic Services, Student Financial Services, Student Life and University Services who are working together to achieve SPU's enrollment goals. Your unique contributions are greatly appreciated.

Take a Tour of Emerson Hall
Faculty and staff are cordially invited to an informal tour of SPU's new Emerson Residence Hall on Thursday, August 30, from 1-2 p.m. Tours will begin in the main lobby of Emerson at 1 p.m and 1:30 p.m. If you are unable to attend, there will be another opportunity to tour our new facility during the Emerson Dedication Ceremony on September 25. If you have questions, call the Residence Life office at (206) 281-2043.

Do You Supervise Student Employees?
Get ready for a smooth start to the academic year by attending the annual Supervisor Training and Refresher Session on Thursday, August 30. The training will take place in the Library Seminar Room from 10-11:30 a.m. We will cover student employment paperwork and procedures, updates from the payroll office, the American Disabilities Act, and tips on interviewing and selection. This is a great time to meet and discuss student employment issues with other supervisors across campus. If you have questions, contact Bob Yohnka in the Office of Student Employment at (206) 281-2047, or e-mail byohnka@spu.edu.

Women’s Soccer Comes to SPU
It’s not too early to make plans to attend the inaugural SPU women’s home soccer game on Saturday, September 8, at 7 p.m. Pregame festivities include an on-campus barbecue (cost is $5) followed by a free shuttle to the Interbay Stadium. Three hundred commemorative team photos will be distributed to fans. After the game, Coach Bruch and players will sign autographs and pose for pictures. Ticket prices for SPU faculty, staff, and their families are $3 with identification. Group rates are available by phoning (206) 281-2085 in advance.

Is Your Department Planning a Big Event?
The Office of University Communications is compiling a list of major events, conferences, lectures, special guest appearances, concerts or other programs for the upcoming academic year. Please forward the pertinent event information to Tracy Cooper, news and media relations manager, at tcooper@spu.edu by August 31.

International Students Need Your Help
Several SPU international students will be new to the United States this fall. We want to show them some great SPU hospitality from the start! Some of their needs may include a pickup at the airport, short-term housing with a host family (ranging from one night to a month-long stay), bedding for their residence hall room, a home cooked meal or just an SPU faculty or staff friend to get together with on occasion. Such acts of caring go a long way toward making them feel at home here sooner. If you would be interested in helping in any way, contact Kevin McMahan at (206) 281-2486, or e-mail kmcmahan@spu.edu. Please specify the type of service you might offer, what service you wouldn't be interested in, as well as particular world regions of interest.

Falcon Golf Classic
The annual Falcon Golf Classic is almost here! Save Friday, September 7, for the WG Clark Construction and Lease Crutcher Lewis Contractors 22nd Annual Falcon Golf Classic. This year, the tournament will be held at the Nile Golf and Country Club in Mountlake Terrace. All monies raised will go toward scholarships for our men's basketball team. Faculty and staff are welcome to register a foursome for $150 per golfer. For more information or to request a brochure, contact Joy Drovdahl at (206) 281-2973 or e-mail jdrovdah@spu.ed, or Diana Richards at (206) 281-2085 or e-mail simone@spu.edu.
