Student Employees of the Year Honored
The "2001 Student Employees of the Year" were named at the fifth annual Student Employee Recognition Ceremony on April 3. Out of the many nominations received from on- and off- campus employers, two students prevailed. Jonathan Lyons was named on- campus "Student Employee of the Year." Jonathan has been working in Computer Information Systems since the fall of 1999. He was nominated by his supervisor, Reece Carson. Jennifer Benjamin was named off-campus "Student Employee of the Year." She has been employed at the Agros Foundation since January of 2000. Her nomination was submitted by Justin Sundberg. Thank you to all of the supervisors that submitted nomination forms. The selection process was a difficult one. There were many students that were qualified for this award. April is "National Student Employment" month and we are encouraged to say thank you to the student employees that are so vital to SPU and the surrounding community.

Were You Ever a Student Employee?
As we celebrate our student employees on the SPU campus, the Office of Student Employment is hoping to put a story together for The Falcon that will make a memorable addition for "National Student Employment Month." (It will take something significant to overcome the hype of April also being "National Frog, Floor Covering and Welding Month.") Would you allow your own experience to be used to illustrate the success that can come to student employees? All that is needed is to answer two simple questions. The questionnaire can be completed by clicking the link. Thank you for your help. http://www.spu.edu/depts/ose/studentempques.html

SPRINTERS Can Help With Spring Cleaning
Please support SPRINT participants through Project Workshare. For a suggested donation of $12 per person, per hour, you can hire students to help with yard work, house cleaning and other chores. All proceeds go directly into student accounts toward their upcoming summer SPRINT trips. Project Workshare dates are April 14, May 5 and May 19. Contact Brian Larsen at (206) 286-6326, or e-mail blarsen@spu.edu.

Computer Training Reminder
"Office Basics" computer training is available to all employees now. We are excited to be able to offer Microsoft Office computer training through Micron University. Micron's "office basics" library includes courses on computer applications such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint), Windows Operating System, Access 2000, Outlook 2000, FrontPage and more! All courses are online, self-study tutorials designed for all skill levels. To take advantage of this great opportunity, go to SPU's Web page, click on "Computer Help Desk," go to the "training" tab and follow the instructions to enroll. This training is sponsored by the Office of Human Resources, and Computer and Information Systems, as part of the new and improved Employee Enrichment Program.

Catholic Scripture Cadre
A Catholic Scripture Study cadre, facilitated by Joe Hastings of the Archdiocese of Western Washington, is currently meeting on campus. The focus for Spring 2001 is the Gospel of Luke. Staff Payroll Change?
The 15th of each month is the last day to make adjustments or additions to your staff payroll check.

April Is Academic
You've seen the banners around campus and yes, it's here! Academic April has begun. This is our fourth year in using the month of April to focus on students' academic progress and it's WORKING! Last year we saw a 5 percent improvement in our graduation rates; a big jump in such a short time. Check out the Academic April Web site on the SPU home page at http://www.spu.edu/special/academicapril/. All events are listed, including Faith Forums, career development sessions and the new "Major's Fair." Look for ads in The Falcon for weekly updates and reminders. Academic April is a universitywide event. As faculty and staff, you work closely with students and through those relationships you have the opportunity to guide their academic progress. As you are working with students, feel free to e-mail Student Academic Services at sasinfo@spu.edu with any questions regarding Academic April events. With your support, students will continue to progress and graduate in a timely manner.

Trivia Fans Unite
For a great night out, you can't beat the annual Washington Literacy Trivia Bee, May 23, 6:30-9:30 p.m. at Town Hall. The SPU Dream Team of Academe (Team members: Eric Hanson, professor of music; Doug Downing, associate professor of economics; and former SPU staff member Tim Surdyk. Coach: Tracy Cooper, news and media relations manager in University Communications) are in the hunt for the traveling trophy of trivia. Last year the SPU team placed fourth in a field of 30. Hilarious emceeing by NPR's Bill Radke. Great food, silent auction and a good cause. Tickets are just $25 each, available now from Connie McDougall at (206) 784-6411 or xcjmac@aol.com. Join the SPU contingent for a raucous evening of arcane chicanery!

SPU Theatre Presents Translations
The play, Translations, opens Thursday, April 19. Set in Ireland in 1833, Brian Friel's "hauntingly lyrical play" is built around the historic British campaign to replace Gaelic place names with English ones. Described as a "modern classic," Translations explores the personal as well as the cultural impacts this has on the people of two different heritages. Tickets are on sale now at the FPA Box Office in McKinley Hall. Ticket prices are $6 for students and seniors, $10 all others. Performances are April 19-21, 26-28, at 7:30 p.m. To purchase or reserve your tickets, stop by the box office or call (206) 281-2959. Be looking in your mail for an opening weekend complimentary faculty and staff invitation.

Come and Say Goodbye to Rich
Rich Okamoto, assistant director of the Center for Learning, is leaving SPU after 11 years. He has been involved in many campus programs over the years, including teaching, counseling, serving on CREA, training tutors and leading cadres. He has also been involved in several Seattle community groups, serving as an effective witness for SPU on the board of the downtown YMCA and various state professional organizations. There will be a reception for Rich to say thanks and wish him well on Wednesday, April 11, from 3-4 p.m. in the Fireside Room.
