ANNOUNCEMENTS

April Is Academic
You've seen the banners around campus and yes, it's here! Academic April has begun. This is our fourth year in using the month of April to focus on students' academic progress and it's WORKING! Last year we saw a 5 percent improvement in our graduation rates; a big jump in such a short time. Check out the Academic April Web site on the SPU home page at http://www.spu.edu/special/academicapril/. All events are listed, including Faith Forums, career development sessions and the new "Major's Fair." Look for ads in The Falcon for weekly updates and reminders. Academic April is a universitywide event. As faculty and staff, you work closely with students and through those relationships you have the opportunity to guide their academic progress. As you are working with students, feel free to e-mail Student Academic Services at sasinfo@spu.edu with any questions regarding Academic April events. With your support, students will continue to progress and graduate in a timely manner.

Thalia Symphony Performs Music of Scandinavia
The Thalia Symphony Orchestra, comprised of local musicians and SPU music students, will perform a special evening of Scandinavian music on Sunday, April 8, at 7:30 p.m. at the Shorecrest Performing Arts Center in Shorecrest High School, 15343 25th Avenue NE in Shoreline. Under the direction of Eric Hanson, SPU professor of music, the symphony will perform "Serenade" by Wilhelm Stenhammar, "Mountain King Suite" by Hugo Alfven and "Piano Concerto" by Edvard Grieg. Special guest pianist, George Fiore, will also perform. Tickets are $10 for adults, $6 for students and seniors, and $3 for SPU students and children 12 and under. To order tickets, call (206) 281-2048.

Nominate a Staff Person
Want to appreciate a staff member? Act now by nominating them to Staff Council for the Oral V. Hemry "Staff of the Year" Award. Two staff members (one exempt and one non-exempt) will be awarded $1,000 in appreciation of their contribution to the SPU community. Submit your online nominations at http://www.spu.edu/special/staffcouncil/staff_of-the_year_nominations.html. Hard copies are also available around campus. To request one, please contact Dean Carrell at (206) 281-2083. Deadline is April 20.

Nominate Another Staff and Faculty Person
The President's Awards for Excellence annually recognize one faculty member and one staff member whose contributions to SPU honor the University's mission and exemplify the values and vision of the Comprehensive Plan for the 21st Century. The President will select and then, on Tuesday, May 8, 2001, announce the recipients at the President's Chapel for Faculty and Staff Recognition. To nominate individuals, go to the Web site at http://www.spu.edu/special/presaward/. The deadline is Friday, April 13.

SPU Math Department Hosts Mathematicians
The SPU mathematics department is hosting the annual meeting of the Pacific Northwest section of the Mathematical Association of America, April 6-7. Mathematicians from seven states and Canada will gather on the SPU campus for a variety of presentations on mathematical research and undergraduate mathematics education. The meeting features numerous research presentations by undergraduates, as well as short courses on grant writing and research in mathematics. The conference is organized by Brian Gill, SPU associate professor of mathematics, and Nancy Neudauer from Pacific Lutheran University. For more information visit the Web site at http://www.spu.edu/~bgill/pnwmaa

Rebecca Is Coming
Rebecca St. James, one of the best known Christian female pop artists, is coming to SPU. Her performance, with LaRue and special guest Tree63, is Saturday, April 7, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $13.50 in advance, $16 at the door or $17.50 for gold seats. Groups of 10 or more, and student tickets, are $10.50. Purchase tickets in the ASSP office in the SUB, or charge by phone at 1 (877) 777-4222, or online at www.ccauthority.com.

Need Some Spring-Cleaning Help?
It's time once again for SPRINT's Project WorkShare! WorkShare is a chance for mission team participants to raise support for their upcoming Summer Break trips. If you need help with your spring-cleaning or yard work (or anything else), you can hire SPRINTers for a suggested donation of $12 per person per hour. Project WorkShare students will be available April 14, May 5 and May 19. Contact the SPRINT office at least one week in advance if you would like to hire our students. Contact SPRINT Fundraising Coordinator Brian Larsen at (206) 286-6326, or e-mail blarsen@spu.edu.

Staff Payroll Change?
The 15th of each month is the last day to make adjustments or additions to your staff payroll check.

Faculty With Evening Students
The Office of University Services will be open until 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 3, and Wednesday, April 4, so evening students can get their SPU ID cards. These cards are used to access meal plans, check out materials from the Library, and receive admission to and/or discounts on theatre or sporting events. Students not able to make it during that week are encouraged to go to University Services during regular office hours, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Last Day to Add Classes Is April 3
Students are able to register, add and drop courses until 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 3. After this time, Web registration is no longer available for Spring Quarter. This is the last day to register for classes including classes that meet once a week.

Deadlines for Pass/No Credit, Internships and Independent Study
Students who wish to take a course pass/no credit or register for an internship, independent study or individual instruction in music may do so in Student Academic Services, located Demarary Hall 151, through Tuesday, April 10.
