ANNOUNCEMENTS

Opening Convocation Instructions
Notice to all faculty and staff with advanced degrees: Opening Convocation is scheduled for Tuesday, September 26, at 9:30 a.m. in Royal Brougham Pavilion. Please be ready to line up in the Lower Gym at 9:00 a.m. dressed in regalia. The processional will begin promptly at 9:20 a.m. If you have any questions, please contact Jill Haarsma at jhaarsma@spu.edu or x2785.

Jim Turns a Korner
After eight years as SPU's executive director of University Services, Jim Korner is saying farewell. Please join us to say thank you for the astute leadership Jim has offered during his time here, which includes a vision that transformed both the SPU Bookstore and Gwinn Commons. A farewell reception will be held on Thursday, September 28, from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. in the Gwinn Commons third-floor foyer, which will include a special presentation at 2:30 p.m. Hope you can come!

Pay for Parking Through Payroll
Please return your completed parking applications to the Safety and Security Office as soon as possible. If your application is received by October 10 and you've indicated payment through payroll deduction, the deduction will be withdrawn from the November 1 paycheck.

Print Jobs Before October 6
On October 6, there will be changes with the equipment in the Printing and Mailing Office to better service the campus needs. Although the staff will be able to do some printing on October 6, any large jobs will need to be taken off campus. Your help is appreciated in getting jobs needed on October 6 or October 9 to the Printing Office no later than Wednesday, October 4, at 5:00 p.m. This allows the jobs to be completed on campus rather than taking them off campus. If you have questions, please contact Kaleen Mahoney x2663.

Need Some Extra Dishes?
The Family and Consumer Science Food Labs are being cleaned out. China place settings, glass sets, some everyday dish sets, and odds and ends are available. Great for those who need a second set of dishes! The Dishware Sale will be on Thursday, September 28, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. and Tuesday, October 3, from 1:00–2:00 p.m. on the ground floor of Peterson Hall in the Food Lab. If you have questions, contact Denise at x2195.

SPU Recycling News
Hi, this is Nathan Brouwer, the new student recycling coordinator from Plant Services. Since I’m brand new to this position and it’s a new year, I thought I’d introduce myself to the faculty and staff and give you some updates and reminders concerning campus recycling.

Magazine Recycling: We can now recycle magazines, even the full, glossy kind. The recycling posters around campus list magazines as not recyclable so, if you have a chance, cross that off of the “don’t recycle” column.
Paper Reuse: I would like to encourage all offices to reduce their amount of paper waste by reusing paper that was only printed on one side, especially out-of-date stationary and letterhead. A good use for this paper is internal memos and scratch paper.
Recycling Pick Up: We should be on a regular schedule for recycling pickup soon. If your recycling is not picked up on time, or if it needs to be picked up more frequently, do not hesitate to contact me.
Recycling Mugs: I would encourage those who have one of the plastic recycling mugs to use them whenever you make beverage purchases at the SUB or C-Store. It reduces waste and you get discounts on some items.

If you have any questions, ideas, concerns or comments, contact me at recycling@spu.edu or leave voice mail at x2071.

Free SPU Sports Tickets
The Falcons invite all faculty and staff to join us for another exciting year of SPU athletics and it won't cost you a dime. Faculty and staff receive complimentary general admission tickets (including spouse and dependent children) to all regular season home events in Brougham Pavilion. The soccer games are free if you take the Interbay Shuttle. Simply show your staff ID at the Brougham Pavilion ticket window or on the shuttle.

Free Shuttle to Interbay Stadium
Thanks to a shuttle service to and from Interbay Stadium, attending SPU home soccer games is both free and easy for students, faculty and staff. The campus community is encouraged to use this shuttle service since both on- and off-site parking is scarce at Interbay Stadium. As an added incentive, students, faculty and staff will be issued free tickets on board the shuttle. If they choose to drive themselves or find other means of getting to Interbay, admission will cost $3 (with appropriate ID). Regular general admission prices are $5. Shuttle service will begin approximately one hour before kick-off (most games begin at 7:00 p.m.) and buses will depart from the Ross parking lot across Third Avenue West from The Loop. All shuttle passengers should be prepared to show appropriate campus identification when boarding.

Faculty With Evening Students
The Office of University Services will be open until 6:00 p.m. between Monday, October 2, and Thursday, October 5, so that evening students can get their SPU ID cards. These cards are used to access meal plans, check out materials from the library, and receive admission to and/or discounts on theatre or sporting events. Students not able to make it during that week are encouraged to go to University Services during regular office hours, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

I Need to Reserve Some Media Equipment
The Computer and Information Systems (CIS) department adjusted its media program and policies over the summer. One of the changes immediately affecting faculty is the “two-week prioritization window” for reserving classroom media equipment. This two-week priority period ends Monday, October 2. Please consult your room assignments and then verify what equipment each room contains by going to the following Web page at http://www.spu.edu/help/mediaservices/classroom.html. If you have high-tech needs not met by your assigned room, first contact Melinda Grow at x2635 to see if a room relocation is possible. After that, please send your reservation request to CIS at help@spu.edu or call the Help Desk at x2982. For further information on our media program and policy changes, consult the CIS Web page at http://www.spu.edu/help/mediaservices/newpolicies.html.

Waitlist Ends Tuesday, September 26
The SPU waitlist policy is in effect until 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, September 26. The waitlist operates on a first-on, first-off approach. If space opens up in a waitlisted class, Student Academic Services will contact students from the waitlist who have registered.

Increasing Class Size Ends Tuesday
If you would like to accommodate the students on your waitlist and the room capacity of the classroom would not be exceeded, please contact Melinda Grow at melindag@spu.edu or x2635 in Student Academic Services by 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 26. In order to stop the waitlist on Tuesday, the timeline for increasing enrollment needs to match the waitlist deadline.

Last Day to Add Classes is Friday
Students are able to register, add or drop courses until 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 29. After this time, Web registration is no longer available for Autumn Quarter. This is the last day to register, including for classes that meet once a week.

4WD Tour of the Cascade Mountains
The Society of Fellows is hosting an off-road overnight camping tour of some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. With inspiring views of Mt. Rainier and other Cascade mountain peaks, the tour will be led by SPU Fellow and experienced 4-wheeler, Roger Schoenhals. Faculty and staff are invited. Cost is $35. For more information, contact Sig Swanstrom at x3518.

Last Week to Reserve Casey
The deadline is October 1, to submit a request for a reservation in one of the officers’ houses at SPU’s historical beach property, Casey Conference Center on Whidbey Island. The turn-of-the-century houses that were once part of the U.S. coast artillery fortress “Fort Casey” are available for the personal vacation use for full-time, regular faculty and staff. The cost is $35 total for two to six overnights for you and your guests. To see photographs, go to the Casey Web site at www.spu.edu/depts/casey/. Requests are currently being taken for Casey reservations between February 1 and mid-June 2001. Look for a request form in your mail box this week. Mail or fax the request form anytime prior to October 1. To make certain your fax had reached the Casey office, please followup with an e-mail message to eanema@spu.edu or telephone (425) 775-0775.

FACULTY & STAFF NEWS

Don Holsinger in Israel and Palestine

Nurturing Roots of Peace: Don Holsinger waters a newly-planted plum tree on an Israeli settlement expansion site near Hebron, an act of public witness to ongoing land confiscation and demolition of Palestinian homes on the West Bank. The "terrace" is constructed of rubble from a demolished Palestinian house on which are written prayers for reconciliation and justice.

DON HOLSINGER
, professor of history, participated in a Christian Peacemaker Team (CPT) delegation to Israel and Palestine from July 22 to August 3. CPT, sponsored by Friends, Mennonite and Brethren congregations, is a faith-based violence-reduction program that places teams by invitation in situations of high volatility. There has been a CPT presence in the West Bank city of Hebron since 1995. The seven-member delegation was briefed by Israeli and Palestinian human rights organizations in the regions of Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Nazareth. Half of the time was spent in Hebron, attending briefings, patrolling the tense boundary between Israeli and Palestinian-controlled parts of the city, and documenting the lives of Palestinian families threatened with home demolitions and land confiscation.

Gene Lemcio's Work With Ukrainians
GENE LEMCIO, professor of Biblical Studies in the School of Theology, taught a five-week course during the summer at the Ukrainian Pentecostal Church of Kent titled "The Greek New Testament and Ukrainian Translations (Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant)," which examined texts whose various renderings have a direct bearing upon Christian faith(fulness).

sdsd

At the beginning of the series, he was asked by the Department of Higher Learning in the newly formed union of West Coast Ukrainian Pentecostals to advise the chair about advanced education for immigrant pastors. That this might be done via a connection with SPU will be explored.

sdsd

On September 9, Gene was interviewed by KNDU-TV, the NBC affiliate in Richland, Washington, about proposals by Ukrainian artists from Renton and Federal Way to assist the City of Richland in its cultural expansion. Ukrainians make up 15-17 percent of Richland's population as a result of massive immigration to Washington state during the last decade, and because of sister-city ties with Slavutych, where most of those who worked at Chornobyl (Ukrainian spelling) have been resettled. These two atomic cities are working closley together to develop new civic, scientific and commercial partnerships as the nuclear legacy of each diminishes.

sdsd

From September 17-20, Gene and Diane were house guests of the deputy manager of the International Nuclear Safety program. He arranged for meetings with officials at Battelle's Pacific Northwest Nuclear Laboratory (PNNL) who has been contracted by the US Department of Energy to build a new shelter over the infamous reactor IV that exploded upon the world in 1986. Battelle has asked Gene to advise them about helping the town of Slavutych to recover economically when Chornobyl is closed in December. The manager of College and University Relations encouraged SPU to consider signing "a memorandum of understanding" with PNNL whereby our students and faculty could apply for internships and opportunities for research.

Alberto Ferreiro in Spain
This summer Alberto Ferreiro, professor of European History, and his wife Debra, took a group of 21 adult learners from Puget Sound parishes on a two-week Carmelite pilgrimage in Spain titled "CARMEL 2000." The group was accompanied by Father Colm Stone, O.C.D., who acted as spiritual mentor and led the group in daily Eucharist and contemplative prayer. The group visited all of the places of special significance related to the lives and spirituality of Teresa of Jesus and John of the Cross in Salamanca, Avila, Segovia, Toledo, Leon, Medina del Campo and Alba de Tormes. They were given access to chapels and other sites not normally open to the general public.

Denise Daniels Co-authors Article
Denise Daniels, assistant professor of management in the School of Business and Economics, co-authored an article titled "The In-Basket Exercise as an In-Class Development and Assessment Tool," which has been accepted for publication by The Journal of Business Education.

Ross Stewart's Article on Accounting
Ross Stewart, professor of accounting in the School of Business and Economics, wrote an article titled "The Deliberation Around Accounting Techniques: Accounting for Depreciation and Foreign Exchange in an Indian Jute Company, 1870-1900," which has been accepted for publication in The Journal of Accounting, Business and Financial History.

Carolyn Strand's New Position
Carolyn Strand, assistant professor of accounting in the School of Business and Economics, has been appointed as a charter member of the Washington Society of Certified Public Accountants.

Pete Lynch Is Leaving :(
Peter Lynch will be leaving the Undergraduate Academic Counseling team in Student Academic Services to move to South Dakota. "Why" you may ask? He assures us it's not for the skiing. Pete's last day in the office will be October 13. He has been a wonderful colleague and will be sorely missed.
