SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Mensa Scholarships Now Available!
The Mensa Foundation Scholarship Essay Competition is now in progress. Membership is not required. There are multiple scholarships available. Just write one essay, no transcripts, no letters of recommendation, and no inclusion of test score results. Scholarships are available to both graduates and undergraduates. Applications are due by January 15, and can be found at the attached link or at Student Financial Services. For more information, contact Whitney Kruse at krusew@spu.edu. [link]


Nursing Scholarships
Scholarship awards range from $1,000-$5,000. All applications must be received by January 12, 2007. Scholarship eligibility includes: enrollment in a state-approved nursing program, pre-nursing student taking courses for matriculation to nursing program, currently enrolled at least half-time, involved in nursing organizations, established academic achievement and financial need. Talbots Women's Scholarship
Talbots is pleased to announce scholarship opportunities through the 2007 Talbots Women's Scholarship Fund. Women are eligible for this scholarship if they are: currently residing in the United States; have earned a high school diploma or GED on or before September 1997; enrolled or planning to enroll in a full or part-time undergraduate course of study; be attending the full 2007-2008 academic year and receiving a degree no earlier than May 2008 and have at least two semesters (24 credit hours or more) remaining as of the beginning of the 2007 fall academic year. Students who have previously obtained a bachelor's degree are not eligible to apply. Applications are available online at www.talbots.com or at any Talbots store, or available upon request in the Student Financial Office in lower Demaray. All applications must be postmarked by January 2.

Bikos Appointed to Editorial Board
Lynette Bikos, Associate Professor of Graduate Clinical Psychology, has accepted the invitation to serve on the editorial board of the Journal of Counseling Psychology. Her appointment begins January of 2007.


Fitch Publishes Article on Stem Cells
Cindy Fitch, Associate Professor of Biology and Bryant Webber, SPU 2006 graduate and current first year medical student at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland, published the article on Stem Cells. Urban Plunge
Friday, December 8 is the first day of Urban Plunge. Urban Plunge is a 5-day immersion experience designed to give participants a taste of what it is like to be homeless and what resources are available to Seattle's homeless population. Nights are spent sleeping in a downtown church; days are filled with explorations as participants walk the streets, learn from speakers representing social service agencies, and experience some of the challenges the homeless face. SPU Basketball Double Header
Saturday, December 2, Royal Brougham Pavilion. Double header this week in basketball! The Falcon men and women's basketball teams will be playing back to back games. The women start off the night at 5:00 p.m. against Lewis & Clark State. The men's game is immediately following, starting at 7:00 p.m. against BYU Hawaii. Come cheer on your Falcons!


Oak Harbor Freightlines Challenge
Friday, December 29, 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, December 30, 7:00 and 2:00 p.m., Royal Brougham Pavilion. Falcon basketball is hosting the men's Oak Harbor Freightlines Challenge. The men's basketball team has a game against Cheyney on Friday, and a game against Dixie State on Saturday. The women's team has a game on Saturday at 2:00 against North Dakota. ACADEMIC INFORMATION

Final Examinations and Last Day of Classes
Tuesday, December 5 will be the last day for all day classes and all evening classes. Final examinations will be given Wednesday through Friday. For more information, contact Student Academic Services at sasinfo@spu.edu or (206) 281-2032.


Simon Fellowship
The William E. Simon Fellowship for Noble Purpose recognizes graduating college seniors who are pursuing lives dedicated to and distinguished by honor, generosity, service, and respect. It is a $40,000 unrestricted cash grant award. The deadline for the Fellowship is February 15, 2007. Please visit the attached link for more information and application materials. [link]
