Gwinn Commons Dining Hall Group Meal Requests

If faculty or staff are planning a group meal (Monday-Friday) in the Gwinn Commons Dining Hall, Conference Services is happy to help. Conference Services is now coordinating meal service arrangements for all internal groups made up of 11 or more people when charged to an SPU account. This will streamline service to make sure your group has a pleasant dining hall experience.

Conference Services needs to receive meal order information at least two weeks ahead of the scheduled meal. At that point, a preliminary order will be placed. The department must make Conference Services aware of their guarantee number no fewer than five days before the scheduled meal, and this number will be submitted as final. As we know, guest numbers do tend to change; we can extend service to 10 percent over the guarantee number up to 200 guests, or 20 additional guests for groups of more than 201.

Meal tickets will be distributed to guests, which will then be collected by the dining hall cashier. Conference Services will provide an official count of meal tickets collected and bill the department accordingly. Departments will be charged for the guarantee number or actual count of guests (if higher) immediately following the event.

Conference Services looks forward to working with you. You can request meal service in Gwinn Commons at any time by filling out an online form on the Conference Services website. SPU Hosts Washington Council College Planning Day

A message from Undergraduate Admissions. “We are thrilled to announce that SPU will once again host a Washington Council College Planning Day on Monday, March 18. SPU is pleased to partner with the Washington Council by offering a one-stop opportunity for high school students to learn about the many higher education options in Washington state. In addition to more than 800 high schools students, we will also welcome more than 20 local colleges and universities for this event from 9:45 a.m. until 11:50 am. We could definitely use some help in hosting these students on campus. If you would like to get out of your office and volunteer at this event, we would greatly appreciate it. The SPU Energy Project Team will host a visiting graduate student from Mexico from April through September 2013. She seeks housing and is able to pay $500 per month. Nominate a Student for the Barnabas Scholarship

Do you know a student who demonstrates Christian character, has made a commitment to on- or off-campus service, shows a willingness to take on tasks regardless of recognition or challenge, demonstrates leadership, and is currently junior? If so, we encourage you to nominate the student for the Barnabas Servant Leadership Scholarship. Recipients of this scholarship receive a $750 cash grant and a contribution of $250 given in their name to a charity of their choice. Online nominations are due by March 29, and can be found on the University Ministries/Center for Worship Student Leaders website. More




Swedish Mobile Mammography Services April 4: Sign up Now!

Human Resources and the SPU Wellness Committee have arranged for Swedish Medical Center to send a mobile mammography vehicle to perform private mammograms on April 4. If you're scheduled for a mammogram or past due, consider the convenience of having the screening performed here at SPU. Remember to bring your insurance card and primary doctor's name and address with you. Cancellations will be charged $25. Sign up online. More




Enjoy Weekly Yoga: Only $50 for Spring Quarter

Kathy Stetz, professor of nursing and registered Hatha yoga teacher, will continue to provide yoga sessions on Tuesdays, noon-12:55 p.m. during Spring Quarter (March 26-June 4) in the First Free Methodist Church gym. Take note that there will be no session on April 2 due to inaugural events. All experience levels are welcome. Wear comfortable clothes and bring a blanket, towel, or mat. Yoga is available at a cost of $6 per session or $50 lump sum (a savings of $10 over the remaining 10 sessions). SPU is contributing at least half the instruction cost for this Activity for Life class, and participants provide the second half of the instruction cost. Camp Casey Summer Reservation Requests

Summer reservation requests are now being taken for the Faculty/Staff House at Camp Casey Conference Center on Whidbey Island. The dates available are June 10-September 23, 2013. Summer requests are based on years of service to SPU (as verified by Human Resources), and past summer stays at Casey. Just give us a call and we'll be happy to explain the summer ranking system. Reservation requests are due by March 22 and can be made online. More

Remember the Camp Casey Conference Center for your department retreats (rates as low as $15 per person), or for a church or community organization to which you belong ($22-25 per person). Bookstore Will Open Earlier For Finals Week

The SPU Bookstore will open at the new, earlier time of 7:30 a.m. during finals week in order to serve students who need test-taking materials for 8 a.m. finals. If you are teaching a class with an 8 a.m. final, please make your students aware of this change.




Faculty, Staff Invited to “Jesus and the Qur'an" Workshop

A training workshop, “Jesus and the Qur'an," will be held at First Free Methodist Church on Friday evening, April 12, and Saturday, April 13. The workshop will equip participants to biblically and culturally build fruitful friendships and share their faith with Muslims in the community. Staff Payroll and Benefit Changes Due by the 15th of Each Month

The 15th of each month is the last day to make changes to your upcoming payroll check. Do you need to remove your spouse and/or children from your health care plans? Contact Human Resources to complete the appropriate form. It must be completed by the 15th of the month prior to accessing their new coverage. Otherwise, the change can only occur the subsequent month, and any premiums paid will not be refunded. Changes might include events that are expected to impact your benefits, such as your spouse or children have gaining or losing coverage due to employment, birth, marriage, etc. Additionally, any changes you have made to your 403b account contributions must be made by this date. For changes to your 403(b) account, contact Transamerica Retirement Solutions (Transamerica-Diversified) at 1-888-676-5512 (5 a.m.-6 p.m. PST), or 1-800-755-5801. If you have any other benefits-related changes, call Carrie McCrimmon in Human Resources at 206-281-2676.




Support SPRINT Trips-Purchase Kuma Coffee

This summer, seven teams of SPU students will learn and serve around the world through SPU's SPRINT program. You can support SPRINT participants by purchasing 8-oz bags of direct-trade, whole-bean Kuma Coffee, locally roasted by SPU alumnus Mark Barany. This summer, seven teams of SPU students will learn and serve around the world through SPU's SPRINT program. Baker Presents Paper

Assistant Professor of Business Ethics Bruce Baker presented his research paper “Theological Interpretation of the Entrepreneurial Ethos of Silicon Valley" for the inaugural colloquium of the Theological Engagement With California's Culture (TECC) Project. The project is an interdisciplinary, theological inquiry into the unique challenges emerging at the intersection of California's fluid culture and historical trends in science, industry, and the social sciences. He presented the paper on March 11 in Berkeley, California. Read more about the project online. More




Ferreiro Wins Service Award

Professor of European History Alberto Ferreiro was given an award for his service to the Mount Baker Council of the Boy Scouts, Pack 18, Webelos 1. He's a volunteer leader for some den meetings, and is in charge of snacks and hot dog set-up at all monthly pack meetings. In recognition, he was given the "Esteemed Purveyor of Hot Dogs" award at their Blue and Gold Dinner.




Lemcio Delivers Paper

Emeritus Professor of New Testament Gene Lemcio delivered a paper on February 27 to the Graduate Seminar at the Septuagint Institute of Trinity Western University in Langley, B.C. He made the case that the Old Greek of Daniel portrays the prophet and his three companions as historical signs of the end-time Son of Man and Saints of the Most High. In an excursus, Gene argued that, in the expanded Greek version of the book, Daniel acts as an historical sign of the end-time Ancient of Days/God Most High. So, at least a century before Jesus appeared on the scene, a two-part model/type existed of a human's taking on both of these roles.




Professors Participate in “Search for Meaning" Book Festival

Professor of New Testament Jack Levison and Professor of English Doug Thorpe were among the presenters at Seattle University's “Search for Meaning Book Festival" on March 9. This event draws thousands of participants each year. Doug read and discussed his book Wisdom Sings the World: Poetry, Creation and the Way of Dwelling. Jack presented a session titled "The Holy Spirit Is Not a He." Keynote speakers at the event were Michael Chabon and Reza Aslan.




Pope-Levison's Article Published, Joins Editorial Board

An article by Priscilla Pope-Levison, professor of theology and assistant director of women's studies, titled "Holiness and Pentecostal Movements Within Methodism" was published in the Ashgate Research Companion to World Methodism, eds. Peter Forsaith, William Gibson, and Martin Wellings. London: Ashgate Publishing, 2013: 141-55. She also accepted an invitation to join the editorial board for the Ashgate Methodist Studies series.




SOE Professors Present Paper

School of Education professors Andrew Lumpe, Rick Eigenbrood, and Dan Bishop presented a paper titled “Standards-Based Assessment Systems: A Description and Analysis of the Teacher Performance Assessment and Critical Reflection via Blogging Portfolios" at the annual meeting of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education in Orlando, Florida, on March 1.

Martin on KING-TV

President Dan Martin was interviewed by KING-TV (Channel 5) on March 8 during “Kindergartners Go to College Day," sponsored by SPU's School of Education. He also welcomed the group of more than 70 students from Park Orchard Elementary in Kent.




Overstreet on Quentin Tarantino in Christianity Today

Jeffrey Overstreet, a contributing editor for Response magazine, considers the Oscar-nominated film "Django Unchained," the popularity of Quentin Tarantino, and the prevalence of movies about vigilante justice, in an article titled "Blaze of Gory" published in the March 2013 issue of Christianity Today. Jeff has also accepted an invitation to speak about film interpretation at Hutchmoot 2013 in October, a festival in Nashville celebrating faith, art, and culture.
