Updates, and a Question

I want to extend a deep thank you to everyone who helped make our day with Dr. James Davison Hunter possible. We'll be a better and more mission-minded community because of the thoughts and conversations throughout the day.

I especially want to thank Dr. Margaret Diddams, Dr. Jeff Jordan, Dr. Kevin Neuhouser, Dr. Greg Fritzberg, Dr. Denise Daniels, and Dr. Kerry Dearborn for their leadership and investment in the day.

I have been so pleased with the Blackboard Strategic Planning discussion groups. The responses to the questions I have posed related to our mission and signature commitments have been terrific. If you missed out on this session, please be sure to consider signing up for the session in Spring Quarter related to our vision and future.

Additionally, the first Coffee Conversation in Upper Gwinn was a very engaging session. The second Coffee Conversation will be held this Thursday, March 7, at 1:30 p.m. in Demaray 150. No reservation needed – simply show up and enjoy a time filled with coffee, colleagues, and conversation.

Finally, let me pose a third open question (multi-part) to the community. I posted the same to the Blackboard discussion groups, but after our day with Dr. Hunter, I thought it would be beneficial to receive a broader response. Feel free to send me a response at president@spu.edu

CAMPUS NEWS & EVENTS

Percussion and Flute Ensembles March 5

Join us for an evening of contemporary and ethnic percussion music featuring the SPU Percussion Ensemble, directed by Instructor of Music Dan Adams; and special guests the SPU Flute Ensemble, directed by Instructor of Music Sandra Saathoff. The concert is Tuesday, March 5, at 7:30 p.m. in E.E. Bach Theatre, McKinley Hall. Free and wheelchair accessible.




Camp Casey Summer Reservation Requests

Summer reservation requests are now being taken for the Faculty/Staff House at Camp Casey Conference Center on Whidbey Island. The dates available are June 10-September 23, 2013. Summer requests are based on years of service to SPU (as verified by Human Resources), and past summer stays at Casey. Just give us a call and we'll be happy to explain the summer ranking system. Reservation requests are due by March 22 and can be made online. More




Need a Department Retreat Location? Come to Camp Casey!

Remember the Camp Casey Conference Center for your department retreats (rates as low as $15 per person), or for a church or community organization to which you belong ($22-25 per person). SPU Orchestra, Concert Choir, and Chamber Singers Concerts

The SPU Orchestra will perform Thursday, March 7, 7:30 p.m., at First Free Methodist Church. The orchestra is directed by Professor of Music Eric Hanson. The repertoire includes Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 2, (George Fiore, piano); and Franck's Symphony in D minor. On Friday, March 8, SPU's Concert Choir and Chamber Singers will present their winter concert at 7:30 p.m. in First Free Methodist Church. The choirs are directed by Associate Professor of Music David Anderson. The concerts are free and wheelchair accessible.




Washington Junior Science and Humanities Symposium on Campus

SPU will welcome more than 100 high school students on campus this week as part of the annual Washington Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (WJSHS). The students will showcase their research in science, math, technology, and engineering. These students from across Washington state will present their work in both oral presentation and poster format on Thursday, March 7, and Friday, March 8, in Upper Gwinn Commons. Faculty and staff are especially invited to come and see the poster presentations on Thursday afternoon, 2–3 p.m. If you see students on campus who have "special name tags," give them a personal welcome. Bookstore Will Open Earlier For Finals Week

The SPU Bookstore will open at the new, earlier time of 7:30 a.m. during finals week in order to serve students who need test-taking materials for 8 a.m. finals. If you are teaching a class with an 8 a.m. final, please make your students aware of this change.




Faculty, Staff Invited to “Jesus and the Qur'an" Workshop

A training workshop, “Jesus and the Qur'an," will be held at First Free Methodist Church on Friday evening, April 12, and Saturday, April 13. The workshop will equip participants to biblically and culturally build fruitful friendships and share their faith with Muslims in the community. Staff Payroll and Benefit Changes Due by the 15th of Each Month

The 15th of each month is the last day to make changes to your upcoming payroll check. Do you need to remove your spouse and/or children from your health care plans? Contact Human Resources to complete the appropriate form. It must be completed by the 15th of the month prior to their access to new coverage. Otherwise, the change can only occur the subsequent month, and any premiums paid will not be refunded. Changes might include events that are expected to impact your benefits, such as your spouse or children have gaining or losing coverage due to employment, birth, marriage, etc. Additionally, any changes you have made to your 403b account contributions must be made by this date. For changes to your 403(b) account, contact Transamerica Retirement Solutions (Transamerica-Diversified) at 1-888-676-5512 (5 a.m.-6 p.m. PST), or 1-800-755-5801. If you have any other benefits-related changes, call Carrie McCrimmon in Human Resources at 206-281-2676.




Falcons in Playoffs This Week

The Seattle Pacific men's and women's basketball teams will be in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference basketball tournament playoffs this week at Saint Martin's University in Lacey, Washington. The women, seeded No. 6, tip off at 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6, against No. 3 seed Montana State Billings. The men, with their No. 2 seed, have a bye until Friday's semifinals at 5:15 p.m., when they will take on the winner of Thursday's first-round game between Alaska Anchorage and Central Washington. Fans can purchase tickets at the door or online in advance. Single-session prices at the door, good for all games on one day, are $15 reserved, $10 adult general admission, and $6 general admission for students with ID and seniors. All-tournament tickets at the door are $55 reserved, $40 adult general admission, and $20 general admission for students with ID and seniors. Online tickets can be purchased at a discount through 11:55 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5. More




Support SPRINT Trips-Purchase Kuma Coffee

This summer, seven teams of SPU students will learn and serve around the world through SPU's SPRINT program. You can support SPRINT participants by purchasing 8-oz bags of direct-trade, whole-bean Kuma Coffee, locally roasted by SPU alumnus Mark Barany. The 8-oz bags are $10 each and proceeds benefit SPRINT participants. To order coffee, contact Owen Sallee, coordinator for global and urban involvement, at owen@spu.edu.




Yard Project? House Cleaning? Other Chores? Hire a SPRINTer!

This summer, seven teams of SPU students will learn and serve around the world through SPU's SPRINT program. You can help students raise money for trips by hiring a SPRINTer or a team to handle yard chores, house cleaning, or other labor projects around the house. The fee is $10 per hour, and can be arranged to fit your schedule. Contact student Daniel Lee at leed13@spu.edu for more information. More

Dearborns' Article in CT's This Is Our City

An article by Professor of Theology Kerry Dearborn and her husband, Tim, was published online in "This Is Our City," a multimedia project of Christianity Today magazine seeking to "spotlight the ways Christians are responding to their cities' particular challenges with excellence, biblical faith, and an irenic spirit." The article, "Ministering on the Margins in Rural America," looks at the Tierra Nueva ministry, which reaches drug addicts, migrant workers, and other people living in Skagit Valley. Tierra Nueva was founded by SPU alumni Bob and Gracie Ekblad. Read the article online. More
