It is hard to believe how fast the year is going. It seems like yesterday we were beginning Autumn Quarter!
I really enjoyed all of the Homecoming activities, and want to extend my thanks to everyone across campus whose planning and participation ensured it was a successful weekend. It was fun to interact with so many alumni and hear their stories of how SPU impacted their lives.
The Board of Trustees winter meeting will be held February 13 and 14, and we have been busily preparing for the sessions. Some of the substantive issues we will be addressing are the consideration of tenure candidates, and presenting the University's 2013-14 Guideline Budget.
Perhaps the project I have been most engaged in over the past few weeks has been designing the framework and content for our strategic planning process. I am grateful for the nearly 50 responses I received to the initial Fac/Staff Bulletin question regarding our mission.

“Reading the Persian Empire" is the title of this year's C. May Marston Lecture with Owen Ewald, C. May Marston assistant professor of classics. The lecture is Tuesday, February 5, at 2 p.m. in Demaray Hall 150. Professor Ewald will examine Persian realities and representations in ancient and modern literature. |Torch Quartet Concert With Brian Chin|
Trumpeter and SPU Assistant Professor of Music Brian Chin presents a recital by his new chamber music ensemble, Torch, on Tuesday, February 5, 7:30 p.m. in First Free Methodist Church, adjacent to the SPU campus. The quartet's original compositions are poised between progressive jazz, post-rock, and contemporary classical music. “Torch" is a reference to Thomas Mann's aesthetic mantra, “Art is the sacred torch that must shed its merciful light into all life's terrible depths." The concert is free and wheelchair accessible.
|Autism Researcher Dr. Bernier to Speak at SPU|
Autism has become a prominent focus when it comes to children's health, but it is a disease difficult to understand. SPU's School of Psychology, Family, and Community (SPFC) presents "From Genes to Behavior: What Causes Autism?" with guest lecturer Dr. Raphe Bernier. The lecture is Tuesday, February 5, 7-8:30 p.m., in room 109 of Otto Miller Hall. Dr. Bernier is a licensed clinical psychologist, assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences, and director of clinical services at the University of Washington Autism Center. He is interested in bridging the gap in understanding genetic events and neurological deficits in social cognition. He is the author of Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Reference Handbook, and is actively involved in clinical research in etiology, the brain, and treatment of autism spectrum disorders. Hannah Notess, editor of SPU's Response magazine, will give an inside look at the award-winning publication and website in the Library Reading Room on Thursday, February 7, at 12:30 p.m. She will talk about the work of telling SPU stories through words and images, and about the role of print magazines in our digital culture.
|Reading with Milton Fellow Kelly Foster|
Image journal's Milton Fellow Kelly Foster will read from her current manuscript on Friday, February 8, at 7 p.m. in the SPU Art Center Gallery. Kelly, a creative nonfiction writer working with Lauren Winner during her year's fellowship at Image, will read from her manuscript "Boystown Blues." |Oscar Talk With Keuss, Chaney, and Overstreet|
Professor of Christian Ministry, Theology, and Culture Jeff Keuss; Professor of English Christine Chaney; and Response Contributing Editor Jeffrey Overstreet will join show host Jennie Spohr to record a new episode of “The Kindlings Muse" podcast on Monday, February 11, at 7 p.m. at Hale's Ales Brewery and Pub. They will discuss the theological implications of this year's Oscar nominations in front of a live audience. The event is sold out, but you can still get your name on a wait list. |Community Kitchen Fundraiser: "Finals Fuel"|
SPU's Community Kitchen program is offering "Finals Fuel" bags on March 4 and 5. The bags are a fundraiser for the Community Kitchen. They are offering meals for two in a reuseable nylon bag customized with the Community Kitchen logo. Meal bag options are $25 and dessert bag options are $10.

|New $500 Scholarships Through SPU's MoneyWise Program|
All faculty and staff are urged to inform students that they can become eligible for $500 scholarships by participating in Moneywise, SPU's online financial literacy program. MoneyWise uses CashCourse — an online financial education resource provided by the National Endowment for Financial Education® — and other resources to provide a breadth of financial education assigned by class level. Student Financial Services notifies students by email about the assignments to complete. Students who complete each of the assignments for their 2012–13 MoneyWise course will be eligible to participate in a drawing for a $500 scholarship. |Art Center Gallery Presents "Student Showcase"|
The SPU Art Center Gallery is now showcasing the works of student artists. The works on display include sculpture, print, charcoal drawings, and more. The gallery is open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m -5 p.m. There will be a closing reception on Tuesday, February 12, at 4:30 p.m., where guests may talk with students and their professors. |Alsbury Debates Relevance of School Board|
Professor of Educational Leadership Thomas Alsbury was part of debate on the relevance of school boards at an event sponsored by the National School Board Association (NSBA) on January 28 in Washington, D.C. Before an audience of 700 school board members, legislators, and others, Thomas debated the question, "Are school boards still relevant today?" He argued in favor of school boards, while Cynthia Brown, past presidential appointee as assistant secretary for the U.S. Department of Civil Rights, argued against them. Also in the debate was Tom Gentzel, executive director of NSBA. The debate was moderated by a reporter from the National Journal.
The debate was followed by remarks from U.S. Department of Secretary Arne Duncan. Thomas also signed copies of his book after the debate. Members of the audience took the information presented by Thomas to draft a letter to Congress discouraging national interference with local governance of schools. In addition, 600 members of the audience used the information presented to discuss the issue with congressional members in a "Day on the Hill" event held the following day.
