|President's Spring Forum May 1|
The annual President's Spring Forum honoring faculty and staff is Tuesday, May 1, at 9:30 a.m. in Royal Brougham Pavilion, with a community reception immediately following. Offices will be closed during that time to encourage everyone to attend.
|Encourage Your Pre-Health Students to Attend the Recruiter's Fair|
SPU's Pre-Health Club is sponsoring a graduate school recruiters' fair on Tuesday, May 1, 2:30-6:30 p.m. in Upper Gwinn. Encourage your pre-health students to attend this event, where they can meet and network with recruiters from medical, dental, optometry, physical therapy, veterinary, and other graduate schools. Faculty and staff are also encouraged to come to the fair to represent SPU. Background music and refreshments will be offered.
|Brass Ensemble Concert|
The Brass Ensemble will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 1, in the First Free Methodist Church. The concert is free and wheelchair accessible.
|2012 Walls Lecture: The Salvation of a "Sinister Kid"|
All faculty and staff are invited to attend the 2012 Walls Lecture featuring School of Theology Professor Rob Wall and the Reverend Anthony Robinson as a respondent on Wednesday, May 2, at 7 p.m. in First Free Methodist Church, Fine Center. Wall is the Paul T. Walls professor of Scripture and Wesleyan Studies. The lecture will focus on Romans 7:14-25. “This passage has long been a storm center of Protestant interpretation, especially as it relates to the gospel of justification by faith alone. Does this passage realistically describe the spiritual frustration of the believer who knows what God wants but is unable to obey God? Or does the argument of Romans require a different identity of the "I" character of Chapter 7, more in line with Wesley's "scripture way of salvation?" This year's Walls Lecture responds to these questions in a way that seeks to encourage our life with God.
|Thursday Food for Thought: Robert Drovdahl on 1 Corinthians|
At the next Thursday Food of Thought on May 3, Professor of Christian Ministries and Education Robert Drovdahl will talk about his Lectio guided Bible reading on 1 Corinthians, chapter 11. The reading starts at 12:30 p.m. in the Library Reading Room. What do short hair, head coverings, and potlucks have to do with proper worship in the church at Corinth? Come hear the answers. |“Last Lecture" With Suzanne Wolfe|
Seattle Pacific University's Ivy Honorary presents “The Last Lecture of Suzanne
Wolfe" on Thursday, May 3, at 7 p.m. in the Library Seminar Room (second floor of
the Library). Suzanne is an instructor in the English Department. A light dessert will be provided. Students, faculty, staff, and the general public are welcome to attend. The concept of a “Last Lecture" is based on a 2007 lecture and 2008 book by Randy Pausch, a Carnegie Mellon University computer science professor who died from pancreatic cancer. In subsequent Last Lectures, professors reflect on what matters most and what wisdom they would hope to share with others. Ivy Honorary is SPU's chapter of the National Mortar Board Honor Society.
|Farewell Event for the Eatons|
Faculty, staff, and their spouses and guests are invited to a special farewell event
for President Philip Eaton and Sharon Eaton on Wednesday, May 9, 5:30-7:30 p.m. in

|Music Therapy Symposium This Week|
The Music Department and the Music Therapy Association of Washington are sponsoring a music therapy symposium titled “Emerging Trends in Research and Clinical Applications," May 4-5 on campus. The keynote guest presenter is Dr. James Gardiner, a neuropsychologist in Rapid City, South Dakota, who practices psychotherapy, teaches wellness classes on improving mental skills, plays piano professionally, and leads community drumming circles. His research is on how music affects brain functioning and the development of musical treatments for neurological injuries. The SPU community is invited to attend. Find out more at the event website. |SPU Memorial Day Observance|
There will be a flag retirement and remembrance ceremony at the flag pole in Tiffany
Loop on Tuesday, May 29, at 1 p.m. to honor Memorial Day. This event is sponsored by
the Veteran and Military Support Cadre. Faculty, staff, and student veterans will
retire SPU's current U.S. flag and raise a new one. SPU students and alumni killed
in the line of duty since World War II will be remembered. Alumnus Nic Madrazo'08,
who was killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan, will also be honored. All are welcome to attend. Contact Psychology Professor Margaret Brown at email@example.com if you have questions.
|Congratulations to SPU's 2011-12 Student Employees of the Year|
The 2011-12 Student Employees of the Year are Grace Vander Ark (on-campus recipient),
and Lauren Rogers (off-campus recipient). Grace worked in Undergraduate Admissions,
2008-11. She finished her studies in March with a degree in psychology. In accepting
her award, Grace said, "Working for a professional Christian organization such as
SPU Admissions for the past four years has been a true blessing. I have built
meaningful relationships, learned professionalism and how to live out the love of
Christ to others in the workplace. I thank God for my experience and the people."
Lauren, a senior studying interior design, has been an intern with Treehouse
since 2008. Treehouse is a nonprofit organization supporting foster children. In
accepting her award, Lauren said, “For the past four years I have had the privilege
of being a student employee at Treehouse. This opportunity has taught me innumerable
lessons about entering the business world. My experience at Treehouse has been
fundamental in supplementing my college education by providing practical,
real-life experience, which has taught me lifelong lessons. As the administrative
aide, I work alongside Treehouse's administration as well as other departments
in the organization, helping out with fundraisers and even back-to-school
shopping! I have been blessed with the opportunity to build many amicable
relationships with all kinds of people while working behind the scenes of a
nonprofit organization. Thank you Treehouse and SPU!"

|Open Enrollment Is Coming!|
Faculty and staff will receive their Open Enrollment packet through campus mail by May 1. Open Enrollment runs May 1-20 this year with the Human Resources (HR) annual Benefits Fair on May 8, 10:30–2 p.m. in Upper Gwinn. |Open Enrollment Changes and Choosing Option 2 Seminars This Week|
From Human Resources Associate Director Carrie McCrimmon: “Please attend one of these sessions to discover how your benefits have changed. Here's a preview: Expect a reduction in the maximum health care flexible spending account election amount, and a change to the vision benefit. In addition, have you wondered whether you are paying more under Option 1 rather than under Option 2? (Option 2 is a lower monthly premium plan only available to employees who cover themselves plus at least one family member. Though it provides the same coverage as Option 1, there are differences in what is paid after the service.) Have you been thinking about switching, but nervous about taking the plunge? Learn how to apply your family's medical history to your decision making. If you are interested, come prepared to share with Aon consultants the types of medical bills you had over this last year and what you may already be expecting in the future. |Food, Fun, and Benefits Q&A at the Benefit Fair May 8|
Please join us for Human Resources' (HR) annual Benefits Fair on Tuesday, May 8, 10:30 a.m.–2 p.m., Upper Gwinn. Spouses are welcome. The HR staff will be there to greet you (Rice Krispie treat and fruit in hand!). We'll answer your questions, or direct you to a representative. It's a great opportunity to get your questions answered. Providers of product and service discounts will also have representatives available. While you're at the company tables, check out the door prize they are providing. If you're interested and feel lucky, go ahead and fill out a ticket and drop it in the bag. There will be a drawing for the prize at the end of the fair. You don't have to be present to win. Good luck! Remember, online open enrollment is May 1-20. The fair is a great way to get ready.

|Maier Wins Poetry Award|
Professor of English Jennifer Maier is the winner of the 2012 Poetry Society of America's (PSA) Emily Dickinson Award. The society gives this award to honor the memory and poetry of Emily Dickinson and “for a poem inspired by Dickinson though not necessarily in her style." The PSA's annual awards are among the most prestigious honors available to poets. They are given to poets at all stages of their careers, and recognize everything from a single poem to the society's highest honor, the Frost Medal, which celebrates lifetime achievement in poetry. Jennifer will receive the award on May 8 at the 102nd PSA annual awards ceremony at the National Arts Club in New York City. The PSA posted one of Jennifer's poems online. More

Professor of Industrial/Organizational Psychology Margaret Diddams and industrial/organizational doctoral graduate Glenna Chang's article titled "Only Human: Exploring the Nature of Weakness in Authentic Leadership" was recently published in Leadership Quarterly.
|Paulus Chapter Published|
University Librarian Michael Paulus contributed a chapter in the new book Past or Portal?: Enhancing Undergraduate Learning Through Special Collections and Archives, published by the Association of College and Research Libraries. Michael's chapter, “What Is Primary: Teaching Archival Epistemology and the Sources Continuum," introduces a model that helps students conceptualize and analyze sources of knowledge.
|Ferreiro Invited Speaker|
Professor of European History Alberto Ferreiro was an invited speaker at a symposium
in Lisbon, Portugal, sponsored by the Center of Classical Studies, University of
Lisbon, April 12-13. The symposium on Galicia and Portugal was titled “Culture and
Culture Before D. Afonso Henriques." His paper was titled "The See of Dumium/Braga
Before and Under Visigothic Rule." Since pre-Roman times,
Galicia (northwestern Spain) and Portugal have had a
close relationship bound by identity, culture, language, and the
Christian faith up to our time. The paper explores, drawing from Iberian
conciliar sources from the fourth to seventh centuries, how the church survived
several political and religious upheavals by focusing on the
Episcopal See of Dumium/Braga, who held the primacy for several centuries in
that region. The papers of the symposium will be published in a special volume.
|Overstreet Speaks About Movies on Moody Radio, Elsewhere|
On Wednesday, April 25, Moody Radio's “Midday Connection" program featured an hour-long interview with University Communications Specialist Jeffrey Overstreet about movies, faith, discernment, and his book Through a Screen Darkly. The program was suggested by a student at Biola University, where the book is used as a text in film classes. Jeff continues to speak on the subject of film and faith, recently giving presentations at The Lantern Community Church in Calgary, Alberta, and at Dick Stub's Kindlings WinterFest on Orcas Island. He will teach fiction workshops at Gove Hill in Vermont in July, and speak about storytelling at Laity Lodge in September. Listen to the Moody Radio interview online. More
|Castelo Lectures in Scotland|
Associate Professor of Theology Daniel Castelo lectured at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland on April 23. He was hosted by Professor John Webster. The title of his lecture was "Canon and Creed as Creaturely and Pneumatological Prompts of the Christian Imagination."
|Karns Presents Paper|
Gary Karns, professor of marketing, presented a paper "A Problem-based Approach to the Marketing Management Course" at the proceedings of the Marketing Educators' Association, April 19-21 in Long Beach, California. Gary also led a faculty development workshop titled “Becoming a More Effective Marketing Educator."
