ADHD Specialist to Lecture on Campus

It is estimated that approximately two million children have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in the United States. In a regular-sized classroom, at least one child struggles with this disorder. Dr. Chris Varley, program director of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Residency Program at the University of Washington, will speak about this disorder on Tuesday, April 10, at 7 p.m. in Demaray Hall 150. In his lecture titled, “Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: A Review of Phenomenology, Diagnosis, and Evidenced Based Treatments," he will discuss the signs and symptoms of ADHD, best diagnosis practices, and evidenced-based treatments. The event is sponsored by the School of Psychology, Family, and Community.




David Brooks Comes to Campus

Noted author and New York Times columnist David Brooks returns to SPU on Wednesday, April 11. He will speak at a public lecture at 1 p.m. in Upper Gwinn Commons on the topic of “leadership in a difficult and splintered cultural moment." Known as one of America's most prominent cultural and political commentators, Brooks' most recent book is The Social Animal: The Hidden Sources of Love, Character, and Achievement. He comes to Seattle as the keynote speaker for SPU's Downtown Business Breakfast. For more information, visit the website. More




GospelFest12

SPU presents “GospelFest12," a two-day celebration of gospel music heritage on April 14 and 15. The event will include performances by the SPU Gospel Choir and 300-voice gospel community mass choir, in addition to the Gospel Choir Festival, where the finest Northwest gospel choirs go head-to-head in a competition for a grand prize of $5,000. Student Academic Services is gearing up for an exciting season — New Student Advising season! On the following dates, we'll be hosting 200 students and their families to help them get advised, registered for classes, and oriented with their upcoming transition to the SPU community.

Important Registration Deadlines

Increasing class enrollment ends Tuesday, April 3. If you would like to accommodate more students into your course, and the room capacity of the classroom would not be exceeded, contact Tiffany Shelton at shelton@spu.edu or 281-2635 or Lee Staman stamal@spu.edu or 206-281-2254 in Student Academic Services by noon on Tuesday, April 3, to have your class enrollment increased.
Last day to add classes is Tuesday, April 3. Students are able to register, add, and drop courses until 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 3. After this time, web registration is no longer available for Spring Quarter. This is the last day to register for classes including classes that meet once a week.
Other registration deadlines. Students wishing to take a course pass/no credit or register for an internship, independent study, individual instruction in music, or practicum may do so in Student Academic Services (Demaray Hall 151) until 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 11.




Staff Payroll Change?

The 15th of each month is the last day to make adjustments or additions to your staff payroll check. If you have any changes, call Carol Clement, payroll lead in the Finance Office, at 206-281-2533.




Tent City 3 Post-Survey

A brief survey about having Tent City 3 at SPU is online at the SPU Tent City 3 website. This will give students, staff, faculty, and others an opportunity to express their opinions and experiences about Tent City 3's stay at SPU. We value your perspective, so please fill out the survey by April 9. This survey has been approved by IRB (## 111205003). Yoga Tuesdays This Spring

Kathy Stetz, professor of nursing and registered Hatha yoga teacher, returns to practice yoga in the gym at First Free Methodist Church, 12:30-1:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, April 3–May 29. All activity and experience levels are welcome. Wear comfortable clothes and bring a blanket, towel, or mat. Don't forget: You can get points through WebMD for participating. You will be able to self-apply five points for each month's participation. These points count toward your quarterly 50 points in WebMD. You can self-apply these and other points based on healthy activities. When you earn 50 points between 4/1/2012 and 6/30/2012, you will receive $50 for your 2013-14 flexible spending account. Nominate a Student for the Barnabas Scholarship

Do you know a student who demonstrates Christian character, has made a commitment to on- or off-campus service, shows a willingness to take on tasks regardless of recognition or challenge, demonstrates leadership, and will be a senior during the 2012-13 school year? If so, we encourage you to nominate the student for the Barnabas Servant Leadership Scholarship. Recipients of this scholarship receive a $750 cash grant, and a contribution of $250 will be given in their name to a charity of their choice. Online nominations are due by April 6 and can be found on the University Ministries/Center for Worship Student Leaders website. More

What are the different parts of Medicare? Which ones will I need? How much does Medicare cost? What does Medicare cover? What can you do about the things it doesn't cover? How to Bike to Work and Tips From SPU Bike Commuters

Each year, more and more people choose bicycling for transportation. While you may know how to ride a bike, you may wonder how to share the road with traffic, plan the best route to work, and arrive in style for that first meeting of the day. Join a certified Cascade Bicycle Club instructor for this free one-hour introductory class on Thursday, April 5, at noon in Demaray Hall 353. In this class, you'll learn how to choose and adjust a bicycle; the rules of the road, riding safely, and comfortably; planning your bike route; choosing clothing, helmets, and gear; and basic bike maintenance. Also on-hand will be SPU bike commuters (from Kent, Everett, Edmonds, and West Seattle) who will share their routes and tips on commuting to campus. Could You Use $100? Personal Health Screening April 16 and 19

Do you know your blood pressure, cholesterol, blood glucose, pulse and BMI? If not, get this information free! If you receive SPU medical benefits sign up for a convenient appointment time on April 16 or 19 in the Library Seminar Room. All that is needed is finger prick. The test does not require fasting though you may. To be eligible for the $100, you must bring your SPU ID number with you to the testing. Don't forget to also take the WebMD HealthQuotient survey between April 16 through May 14, and enter your personal health screening results. Meier, Paulus Make Presentation

University Archivist Adrienne Meier and University Librarian Michael Paulus gave presentations at the Northwest Digital Archives Advocacy Forum in Portland, Oregon, March 21-22. Adrienne's presentation, “Making Spaces," summarized activities undertaken by the SPU Archives during its participation in an Emergent Archival Programs grant funded by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission. Michael's presentation, “Archives in Institutional Context," focused on the future of collaboration between academic libraries and archives. Northwest Digital Archives (NWDA) “provides enhanced access to archival collections and facilitates collaborations among archives, libraries, and museums in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and Alaska." SPU became a member of NWDA in July 2011 as part of the Emergent Archival Programs grant.




Gutowsky Invited to Work With Students in Thailand

During Spring break, Professor of Visual Communication Design Karen Gutowsky was invited to work with students in the visual communication design and film studies programs at Mahidol University in Bangkok, Thailand. She conducted workshops that helped students develop visual narratives. During the 2010-11 academic year, Karen and Professor Aaron Schmidt from Mahidol University worked weekly via Skype with SPU students and Mahidol University students on an animated film project.




Castelo Lectures at King's College

Associate Professor of Theology Daniel Castelo lectured at the RIST (Research Institute in Systematic Theology, founded by the late Colin Gunton and currently led by Oliver Davies) at King's College in London on March 20 and at the London School of Theology on March 22. Both lectures explored Pentecostalism as a mystical tradition.
