WebMD and Your Health

How are you doing with your WebMD health points? Remember, each quarter you can earn up to 50 points to be converted to $50 for the 2011/2012 flexible spending plan year. There are many ways to earn these points. Need an idea? How about an exercise routine? Start by visiting WebMD's Health Management Center for Exercise (5 points). Consult your doctor (give yourself 2 points). Learn to keep yourself accountable by signing up for one of the Lifestyle Programs, either Weight Management or Exercise. As you complete phases and track your progress, you'll continue to earn points. Enjoy your summer of health!




Staff Payroll Change?

C-Store: 10 a.m.–6 p.m. (Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday) and 10 a.m.–5 p.m. (Wednesday)
Subway: 10 a.m.–2 p.m. (Monday-Friday)

Plan Ahead: Stationery Orders in August, September

Vision Press, SPU stationery vendor, will be closed August 31-September 15. Because of this, stationery orders placed between August 24 (after 10 a.m.) and August 30 (before 10 a.m.) will be submitted on August 30 instead of August 31. Vision Press asks that all proofs be promptly faxed back to them on the afternoon of Monday, August 30. Those orders will be delivered September 15. Kelly Publishes Article Featuring Cranston and Smith-Bates

An article by Communications Specialist Clint Kelly was published in the September 2010 college issue of Living With Teenagers magazine. The article, "Making a Living, Making a Life," coaches parents on how to help their college students choose a major. Featured interviews include Jacqui-Smith Bates, director of the Center for Career and Calling, and Celeste Cranston, director of the Center for Biblical and Theological Education. According to Clint, the main thrust of the article is “people who perceive their work as a calling report the highest satisfaction with life in general." Living With Teenagers is a parenting magazine of the Southern Baptist Convention.




Norlen Appointed to CCCU Commission

News and Media Relations Manager Tracy Norlen has been appointed to a two-year term to the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities (CCCU) Public Relations/Communications Commission. The commissions' main responsibility is to plan the yearly conference for the CCCU public relations and communication managers. SPU will host the conference in 2012.




Wall-Scheffler Participates in Science and Religion Course

Assistant Professor of Biology Cara Wall-Scheffler was a guest speaker at the Faraday Institute's Summer Course on Science and Religion in Cambridge, England. She spoke on the topic “Human Anthropology and the Origins of Religion." Cara also reports: “In addition to presenting and participating, I had the greatest pleasure in watching two 2010 SPU graduates, Ari Diamant and Erik Hauan, take advantage of this wonderful experience and ask questions of such luminaries as John Polkinghorne and Simon Conway-Morris. I received numerous comments from speakers, participants, and the organizers about what a wonderful place SPU must be to send such delightful students to the course. In particular, following one of Ari's questions to Professor Polkinghorne, Ari was immediately sought after by a French doctoral student to continue the discussion. The student was so surprised and pleased to find someone so well read in the topic." Learn more about the course by visiting the website. More




Wicks' Editorial Board Wins MERLOT House Cup

Director of Instructional Technology Services David Wicks is a member of the editorial board that won the “House Cup" award during the annual Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching (MERLOT) conference held last month in San Jose, California. David is an associate editor of MERLOT's Teacher Education Editorial Board. The House Cup award is given each year to the most productive editorial board. MERLOT has 22 editorial boards across many academic disciplines, and the Teacher Education Editorial Board was responsible for 19% of the overall work completed this year. Congratulations, David!
