SPU Library Shares in Archival Grant

The National Historical Publications and Records Commission, the granting arm of the National Archives and Records Administration, has awarded $123,188 in direct funds to the Orbis Cascade Alliance. Administered through the Alliance's Northwest Digital Archives program, the project will assist seven small liberal-arts colleges in Oregon and Washington, including SPU, with archival program development and expose basic information about their collections to researchers. The project will involve a consulting archivist to work with existing staff to complete collection surveys of materials, produce catalog records and finding aids for collections, and make that information available to researchers.




SHS Emergency Kits Fundraiser

The faculty of the School of Health Sciences (SHS) is selling emergency kits as a fundraiser for SHS student scholarships. The kits are designed for two people and come in a backpack. The kit includes emergency blankets, safety goggles, dust masks, moist towelette wipes, rubber gloves, tissues, light stick, small first aid kit, working gloves (with leather palms), emergency ponchos, waterproof matches, 12 water packets, whistles, flashlight with batteries, can opener, and large garbage bag. The kits are $32. Proceeds go toward SHS student scholarships, and you or loved one will have an emergency kit ready to go. Checks can be made out to the SPU School of Health Sciences, and emergency kits can be picked up at the SHS office. June 8 Is Last Chance for 2009–10 Stationery Orders

Do you need university stationery ordered before yearend? If so, you MUST order your stationery items by Tuesday, June 8, before 10 a.m. to be invoiced this fiscal year. Stationary orders are made through Banner.




Senior Gift T-shirts Now Available

The 2010 Senior Gift Committee has T-shirts for sale to help raise money and awareness about this year's class gift – study abroad scholarships. Retirement Party for Bob Weathers

A retirement party for Professor of Physical Education Bob Weathers will be held Thursday, June 10, 1:30–3:30 p.m. in Falcon Lounge. Bob is retiring after 32 years at SPU.




Faculty, Staff Participate in Bike-to-Work Month

May was Bike-to-Work month, and members of the SPU community contributed 4,162 miles of the 1,061,718 that were logged in the Group Health Commute Challenge. In fact, SPU ranked 50th of 683 organizations that logged miles.

SPU was represented by four teams. The SPU Sharrows led the way with 2,033 miles. Riders included Jobe Korb-Nice, Scott Beers, Neal De Witt, Gerard Duguay, Jerry Essenpreis, Bryan Jones, Richard Kim, Nicola Parker, Phil Prins, and Lane Seely. The SPU Psychlers claimed 1,151 miles. Logging miles for the Psychlers were Lynette Bikos, Jordan Simonson, Twyla Campbell, Thane Erickson, Shawn Whitney, Nicola Chism, and Kara Pegram. The SPU Falcons rode 708 miles. Riding with the Falcons were Kristi Nelson, John Terrill, Bruce Congdon, Bob Weathers, Hannah Notess, Tim Nelson, Lorelle Jabs, Carol McFarland, and Bruce Baker. This year, a new team emerged: the SPU SCIclers (Janet Bester Meredith, Tim Nelson, and Ryan Ferrer), who contributed 268 miles. Also participating in bike-to-work month were Kathy Fitzsimmons, William Purcell, Kerry Dearborn, and Allie Fraley. Dearborn Presents at Conference

Kerry Dearborn, professor of theology, spoke at the Women of Vision Conference on June 5 in Gig Harbor. The conference was titled "Break the Chain Conference on Human Trafficking and Modern Day Slavery," and Kerry's plenary address was “Release to the Captives, the Spirit of the Lord Is Upon Me."




Hudson Presents at Conference

Assistant Professor of Education Debby Hudson gave a presentation at the Conference of The Association of Behavior Analysis International in San Antonio on May 31. Her presentation title was “Increasing Social Interaction of Young Students with Autism: Effectiveness of the Conversation Flip Book. She was part of a four-section symposium with researchers from the University of Washington, Ohio State University, and the University of Montana.

A series of 18 allegorical seascapes titled “The Western Wall" by Professor of Art Laura Lasworth were reviewed in the June/July issue of Art in America. Reviewer Michael Duncan says, “Lasworth is a rare lyrical voice in contemporary art, and uses her masterful control of form to convey rich content and genuine feeling." More
