Spring Grades Due June 19

Spring Quarter grades are due in Student Academic Services (SAS) by 4:30 p.m. on Monday, June 19. Grades may be submitted to SAS via the Web, in person, placed in the SAS drop box (located outside of Demaray Hall 151), mailed, or faxed to 206-281-2669. Timely submission of grades helps students and offices with important processes such as the academic dismissal process, disbursing financial aid, and processing enrollment verifications. If instructors want grades to appear on the Web before June 19, they need to contact Coordinator of Student Records Kelli Knapp at kknapp@spu.edu so she can roll the grades to academic history. If there are challenges when grading students, please contact SAS PRIOR to the grading deadline. We may be able to assist with resolving the situation. SPU, Fort Casey Inn Receive Stewardship Award

SPU's Fort Casey Inn recently received the Ebey's Landing National Historic Reserve's 2006 "5-Star Award for Stewardship" within the reserve. The Stewardship Award is given to an organization that has exhibited a long-term achievement in preserving and protecting a significant site (the Fort Casey Inn) in the reserve. Tom Asmus, Casey Conference site manager, and Mitch Richards, guest services coordinator at Camp Casey/Fort Casey Inn, accepted the award on behalf of SPU.




Last Staff Forum on June 7

Join us for the last staff forum of the academic year Wednesday, June 7, 9-10:30 a.m., in the Queen Anne Room in Upper Gwinn. Come enjoy a performance by the University Players, and a time of community worship led by Minister of Worship Stephen Newby. Drinks and light breakfast snacks will be served. Summer On-Campus Student Employment

All students working on campus between June 9 and September 24 must complete a Summer On-Campus Work Referral form with their supervisor. Farewell Reception for Liz Torrence

Farewell Reception for Cory Cooper

Everyone is invited to join us as we bid farewell to Cory Cooper, undergraduate academic counselor, and thank him for his eight years of service to SPU. A reception for Corey will be held Wednesday, June 14, 2-3 p.m. in Demaray Hall, main lobby. Refreshments and light snacks will be served.




Farewell Reception for Steven Beatty

Steven Beatty, performing arts technical director in the Division of Fine Arts, is resigning at the end of the academic year. To thank him for his 13 years of service, the Theatre Department will host a reception for him on Tuesday, June 6, 3-4 p.m. in the E.E. Bach Theatre in McKinley Hall. Everyone is welcome.




Benefits Fair June 13 in the SUB

Come prepared to learn more about the your benefits along with options available to you this upcoming year at the annual Benefits Fair on Tuesday, June 13, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the SUB Gazebo Room. Healthy snacks will be provided, as well as opportunities to win two, $200 cash prizes, along with other prizes provided by our vendors. Please join us and be prepared to have fun!

Are you covering your spouse or dependents and considering PPO Medical Plan Option 2? Go to the Human Resources Web site and look for "Reduced cost PPO Plan Option 2" to learn more. You can estimate your expenses using the “Coverage Advisor" tool at the bottom of the page. It's designed to help compare medical plans. If you need help completing this comparison, there will be computers as well as instructions available at the fair.

Are you having problems with your back? Sound Chiropractic will offer free basic spinal screenings with licensed massage practitioners during the fair to help with your tension and stress.

Are you interested in signing up for a retirement consultation with TIAA/CREF or Fidelity? TIAA-CREF consultations will be held during the Benefits Fair, and Fidelity representatives will be on campus June 14. Studio Arts/Visual Communications Exhibit

SPU's Art Center Gallery is featuring works by graduating seniors in both the studio arts and visual communications programs. A closing reception will be held Friday, June 9, 6-8 p.m. The gallery, located at 3 West Cremona Street, is open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.




SPU Night With the Mariners Is August 4

Join SPU faculty, staff, students, alums, friends, and family at Safeco Field on Friday, August 4, to watch the Seattle Mariners play the Oakland A's. Game time is 7:05 p.m. Tickets are $10 each. Make checks payable to SPU. The deadline to order tickets is Friday, June 30. However, tickets usually sell out before the order deadline date. Planning Campus Events Next Year

Twice a year, the Office of University Communications publishes a community events brochure titled “Engage," highlighting a sampling of campus events of interest to the public. Previous brochures have invited neighbors to guest lectures, symposia, concerts, athletic events, gallery showings, theatre productions, etc. This brochure is sent to more than 35,000 alumni, friends, and Seattle neighbors. We are now collecting event information for the 2006-07 academic year, especially events during Autumn and Winter quarters. If you are planning an event of interest to the public, please forward the information to Tracy Norlen in University Communications at tcnorlen@spu.edu. Fall/Winter Camp Casey Weekend Requests Due June 15

Attention all full-time SPU faculty and staff. June 15 is the deadline to submit an online request for a fall or winter weekend in a Victorian-style officers' house at Camp Casey Conference Center, SPU's historical beach property located on Whidbey Island. The circa-1900 houses, once a part of the Fort Casey coastal military fortress, are available for your extended weekend. A $35 fee allows you and your guests to use the four-bedroom house for two to five days. You may also use the gym, private beach, and other amenities at Camp Casey. To see photos, visit the Camp Casey Web page at www.spu.edu/casey/. Requests will be accepted for stays between September 18, 2006, and January 31, 2007. Please indicate three to five possible weekend dates. Results will be distributed by July 10. If you are offered a spot, you will find that Camp Casey provides a wonderful setting to enjoy the rural, historical beauty of Whidbey Island. Go for walks, bicycle around Crockett Lake, fly a kite, go out for dinner, and shop in Langley, Coupeville, or Port Townsend. Pet Photo of the Week

“Gus is our 4-year-old male Shar-Pei. He is a smart, clean, and affectionate dog. He is a 'Tux,' or black version of the breed. His appearance with saggy skin, wrinkles, and sad countenance has garnered a wide range of reactions, which might be summed up in ‘he's so ugly he's cute.' Anyway, we think Gus is adorable and a great pet. He loves to run around the backyard and chase squirrels (which he never catches, but he keeps trying). He likes to sleep on beds with my daughter or son. He's also been known to snatch treats off the counter when we are not looking. One time, he consumed most of a pork tenderloin, and another time he marched down the stairs with an entire angel food cake in his mouth like it was nobody's business. Ellis Participates in Israeli Conference

Professor of Education Arthur Ellis was an invited guest and participant at the Israeli State Ministry of Education conference on "Citizenship for the 21st Century." The conference was held in Be'er Sheba, Israel, May 21-26, with participants from more than 30 countries. Ellis' paper was titled, “Citizenship Education: Problems and Possibilities."

Eaton's Article Published in Christian Management Report

An opinion piece written by SPU President Philip Eaton was published in the April 2006 edition of Christian Management Report magazine, published by the Christian Management Association. Raeme ("Ray-me") Susan Eby was born 10:33 p.m. on May 27. The proud parents are Performing Groups Coordinator Rachel Eby, and husband, Joel. She weighed 7 pounds, 9 ounces, and was 20.5 inches long at birth. Mother and baby are doing well.
