Campus Closed for Memorial Day

SPU offices will be closed and day classes will not meet on Monday, May 29, in honor of Memorial Day. Evening classes will be held.




Children's Theatre This Week

The SPU Theatre Department presents playwright Y York's “The Last Paving Stone" — a modern fable for children that examines human differences in the context of saving the environment. The performance dates are May 23-27, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the McKinley Backstage Theatre. There will be a matinee performance on Saturday, May 27, at 2 p.m. Tickets are $6 and can be reserved by calling 206-281-2959.




Flute and Brass Ensembles in Concert

A special Spring Concert featuring SPU's Flute Ensemble and Brass Ensemble will be held Tuesday, May 23, at 7:30 p.m. in First Free Methodist Church. The Flute Ensemble is directed by Shelley Collins, and the Brass Ensemble is directed by Brian Chinn. This event is free and open to the public.




Senior Art Exhibit

The annual Senior Art Exhibition is now at SPU's Art Center Gallery, located at 3 West Cremona Street. The exhibit runs until May 24. The Art Center Gallery is open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

A team of 20 students in SPU's Visual Communications program, under the direction of Associate Professor of Art Karen Gutowski Zimmerman, designed the new Web page for SPU's Art Department. On the site you'll find information on programs, faculty, scholarships, internships, and an online gallery featuring art by students and faculty. More




Norris Receives Literary Award

Award-winning poet, spiritual writer, and recipient of the 2006 Denise Levertov Award Kathleen Norris will give a reading from her current work on Wednesday, May 24, at 7:30 p.m. at St. Mark's Cathedral in Seattle. The Levertov Award, established in 2004 by Image: A Journal of the Arts and Religion and the SPU Department of English, is presented annually to an artist or creative writer whose work exemplifies a serious and sustained engagement with the Judeo-Christian tradition. Norris is the author of the best sellers Amazing Grace: A Vocabulary of Faith, The Virgin of Bennington, and The Cloister Walk. For more information, visit the Image Web site. More




Kathleen Norris in Chapel

Hear a reading and lecture by award-winning poet and writer Kathleen Norris in chapel on Thursday, May 25, at 9:30 a.m. in First Free Methodist Church. Norris is author of The New York Times bestsellers The Virgin of Bennington, The Cloister Walk, and Amazing Grace and the 2006 recipient of Image journal's Levertov Award.




Percussion Ensemble in Concert

SPU's Percussion Ensemble, directed by Dan Adams, will perform Tuesday, May 30, at 7:30 p.m. in the E.E. Bach Theatre, located in McKinley Hall. The concert is free and open to the public. The Percussion Ensemble includes ethnic drums and mallet, and other percussion instruments.




SPFC Research Conference June 1

The School of Psychology, Family, and Community will host its third annual research conference on Thursday, June 1, in the Library Seminar Room from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Students from undergraduate psychology, marriage and family therapy, and graduate clinical psychology will present their research.




Thalia Symphony in Concert

Thalia Symphony, orchestra-in-residence at SPU, will complete its 57th season Thursday, June 1, at 7:30 p.m. at First Free Methodist Church, adjacent to the SPU campus. The repertoire includes the music of Dvorak and Bartok, and features pianist Judith Cohen. General admission is $12, and $8 for students and seniors. For tickets, call 206-281-2048. The Thalia Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Professor of Music Eric Hanson, was founded in 1948 and includes local and SPU musicians.




Visual Communications Open House/Portfolio Night

Come enjoy dessert, and music, and take a look at some incredible graphic-design portfolios by seniors in the visual communications program on Thursday, June 1, 6-9 p.m. in the Science Building lobby. Students will be on hand to answer questions about their work and the program.




Integrating Faith and Clinical Practice

The annual lecture in faith and clinical practice is Thursday, June 1, at 7:30 p.m. in Demaray Hall 150. William R. Miller, distinguished professor of psychology and psychiatry at the University of New Mexico, is the keynote speaker. He has authored and edited numerous books and articles including, Judeo-Christian Perspectives on Psychology: Human Nature, Motivation, and Change. His lecture is titled “Across the Great Divide: Including Spirituality in Psychology's Vision of Human Nature." This free lecture is open to the public.




SPU Choirs in Concert on June 2

All of SPU‘s major choirs will perform on Friday, June 2, at 7:30 p.m. in First Free Methodist Church. The SPU's Men's Choir is directed by David Shockey, the Women's Choir is directed by Neil Lieurance, and the Concert Choir and Chamber Singers are directed by David Anderson. This event is free, open to the public, and handicapped accessible.




SPU's John Perkins Center Year-end Review

SPU's John Perkins Center for Reconciliation, Leadership Training, and Community Development is finishing an exciting academic year. In 2005-06, highlights included a visit from Dr. John Perkins, the Urban Youth Leadership Academy, a University Seminar, "Reconciling Leadership in a Global Context," taught by Director Tali Hairston, and more. See how the Perkins Center is engaging people locally and nationally by modeling reconciliation. More




Employee Benefits Fair on June 13

Do you have benefits questions you keep forgetting to ask, or a spouse who would like to know more about their benefits? Everyone is welcome to attend the annual benefits fair on Tuesday, June 13, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. in the SUB's Gazebo Room. SPU benefits vendors will be available with all the information you need-plus some fun and popcorn waiting for you. You will also have several opportunities to receive cash or other door prizes totaling $400, plus great gifts provided by the vendors. Also note that open enrollment runs June 1-30.




SPU Night With the Mariners Is August 4

Join SPU faculty, staff, students, alums, friends, and family at Safeco Field on Friday, August 4, to watch the Seattle Mariners play the Oakland A's. Game time is 7:05 p.m. Tickets are $10 each. Make checks payable to SPU. The deadline to order tickets is Friday, June 30. However, tickets usually sell out before the order deadline date. Join SPU's Team for National Bike-to-Work Month

There is still time to participate in one of the biggest bike commuter events on the West Coast – the annual Group Health Commute Challenge, organized by Cascade Bicycle Club. SPU already has one team registered! If bicycle commuting is new to you, this is a great program to get you started. For seasoned commuters, this is your chance to test your bike-commuting mettle by riding to work as often as you can during the month. Challenge yourself, your workmates, and local businesses to be a part of the solution. Just commute FIVE times or more (round trips) during the month and be eligible for fabulous prizes. During May, riders can also stop by one of the afternoon bike rallies for information, live music, snacks, and great giveaways. The SPU team, called “SPU Spinning Past U," is led by team captain and Admissions Counselor Kristi Nelson. Let Us Know About Your Campus Events for 2006-07

Twice a year, the Office of University Communications publishes a community events brochure titled “Engage," highlighting a sampling of campus events of interest to the public. Previous brochures have invited neighbors to guest lectures, symposia, concerts, athletic events, gallery showings, theatre productions, etc. This brochure is sent to more than 35,000 alumni, friends, and Seattle neighbors. We are now collecting event information for the 2006-07 academic year, especially events during Autumn and Winter quarters. SPU's Garden Tour on June 3

Tour award-winning campus landscapes and explore select residential gardens during SPU's annual Queen Anne and Magnolia Garden Tour on Saturday, June 3, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The day begins with a lecture by award-winning garden designer and SPU ྍ alumna Lorene Edwards Forkner. Then you can enjoy guided tours of several SPU gardens and private gardens on Queen Anne and Magnolia. Tickets are $18 per person in advance or $20 on the day of the tour. Fall/Winter Camp Casey Weekend Requests Due June 15

Attention all full-time SPU faculty and staff. June 15 is the deadline to submit an online request for a fall or winter weekend in a Victorian-style officers' house at Camp Casey Conference Center, SPU's historical beach property located on Whidbey Island. The circa-1900 houses, once a part of the Fort Casey coastal military fortress, are available for your extended weekend. A $35 fee allows you and your guests to use the four-bedroom house for two to five days. You may also use the gym, private beach, and other amenities at Camp Casey. Please indicate three to five possible weekend dates. Results will be distributed by July 10. If you are offered a spot, you will find that Camp Casey provides a wonderful setting to enjoy the rural, historical beauty of Whidbey Island. Go for walks, bicycle around Crockett Lake, fly a kite, go out for dinner, and shop in Langley, Coupeville, or Port Townsend. Pet Photo of the Week

“This is Chloe. She is a 2-year-old English springer spaniel. Her day begins at 4:50 a.m. as she gets a snippet of toast from my husband, Phil. He leaves for work, and then she wakes me up with a face washing and at least one ear washed. We go for our walk every morning at 5:20 a.m. Chloe enjoys swimming, hunting (she has caught a squirrel and a large mouse), camping, and anything that includes her. The picture shows her sleeping on the back of the couch. She loves to lie there while someone is sitting on the couch with her front paws on one shoulder and her back paws on the other shoulder. When you say she is a “springer," it is literal; she will spring over fences, construction barricades, and up and down rockeries. Chloe is a lot of fun and is quite a character." Wicks Wins MERLOT Award

David Wicks, director of instructional technology services, has been selected to receive the second annual Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching (MERLOT) “Volunteer of the Year" award. David will be presented the award during a luncheon held in his honor on August 10 at the MERLOT International Conference in Ottawa, Quebec. MERLOT is providing him with complimentary registration for the conference and will cover his travel costs. In addition, MERLOT will profile David in several publications, including the 2006 newsletters and on its Web site, and have asked him to co-present a session at the conference that highlights peer review. MERLOT is an organization devoted to improving the effectiveness of teaching and learning by increasing the quantity and quality of peer-reviewed online learning materials. Congratulations, David!




Himma Speaks at Columbia University School of Law

Associate Professor of Philosophy Ken Himma gave a presentation on the theory of legal obligation at a conference on legal positivism, democracy, and constitutional interpretation. The conference was sponsored by Ono Academic College Law School and hosted at Columbia University.




Response Wins CASE Awards

Response magazine recently won two awards at the 2006 CASE District VIII regional conference. District VIII includes all public and private institutions in the Pacific Northwest and Western Canada. Response won a bronze medal in the periodicals category (magazines with a circulation of more than 20,000). Assistant Response Editor Sarah Jio won a bronze medal in the writing category (features and articles in magazines, newsletters, tabloids, and Web sites) for her article “Tales of the Tsunami" in the Spring 2005 Response. Ertsgaard, Vision Book Win Award

SPU's “President's Vision Book," designed by University Communications Assistant Art Director Joel Ertsgaard, recently won an award from Finch Paper Company for “Excellence in the Creative Use of Paper." Congratulations, Joel!




Glassco Wins CASE Design Contest

University Communications Graphic Designer Brian Glassco recently won the “More Flash for Less Cash" contest at the 2006 CASE Design Institute conference. Designers were encouraged to submit a publication created in-house or below budget that became highly successful. Contest entries were voted on by conference attendees. Brian designed a cost-saving process that applied pads of business reply cards to TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) posters. He won free registration for next year's CASE Design Institute in Providence, Rhode Island. Congratulations, Brian!




Koskela's Article Published

An article by Doug Koskela, assistant professor of theology, has been published in the Wesleyan Theological Journal, (Spring, 2006). The article, titled "Toward a Distinctively Wesleyan Recovery of the Church's Canonical Heritage," explores the doctrine of the church in the Wesleyan tradition. After tracing the development of the doctrine in American Methodism, the article offers proposals for enrichment from within the broader Christian heritage.




Gallagher Publishes Article on Women's Hymns

Susan VanZanten Gallagher, professor of English and director of the Center for Scholarship and Faculty Development, recently published an essay titled "Domesticity in American Hymns, 1820-1870," in Sing Them Over Again to Me: Hymns and Hymnbooks in America, edited by Mark A. Noll and Edith L. Blumhoffer, University of Alabama Press, 2006.




Spina's Book Translated Into Korean

Frank Spina's book, The Faith of the Outsider: Exclusion and Inclusion in the Biblical Story, has recently been translated into Korean. Frank is professor of Christian Scriptures.




Lubag Leads Clinics in Canada

Vocal jazz and jazz piano instructor Reuel Lubag was asked to be a special clinician for the jazz program at Wellington Secondary School in Nanaimo, British Columbia, last week. Reuel was accompanied by Lionel Hampton Big Band bassist Christian Fabian, and he spent several days coaching ensembles and teaching private lessons in preparation for the Canadian nationals competition in Toronto, Ontario, this week. Reuel will be doing more work in Nanaimo this fall and possibly at nearby Malaspina College.

Universal Design Class Documentary Airs on Cable Television

A documentary created by an SPU universal design class in the Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) department is currently being shown on the City of Seattle television channel. The program documents the collaboration among the city's Universal Design Coalition, Aging and Disability Services and FCS to design and build a universally designed home in the city of Tukwila.
