Grading Deadlines

Winter grades are due in Student Academic Services (SAS) by 4:30 p.m. on Monday, March 27. Grades may be submitted to SAS via the Web, in person, placed in the SAS drop box (located outside Demaray Hall 151), mailed, or faxed to 206-281-2669. Timely submission of grades helps students and offices with important processes such as the academic dismissal process, disbursing financial aid, and processing enrollment verification. If instructors want grades to appear on the Web before March 27, they need to contact Student Records Coordinator Kelli Knapp so she can roll the grades to academic history. If there are challenges when grading students, please contact SAS PRIOR to the grading deadline. We may be able to assist with resolving the situation. Registration Deadlines


Waitlist Ends March 30
The SPU waitlist policy is in effect until 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, March 30. The waitlist operates on a first on, first off approach. If a space opens up in a waitlisted class, Student Academic Services (SAS) will contact students via email who have been registered from the waitlist.
Increasing Class Enrollment Ends March 30
If you would like to accommodate the students on your waitlist, and the room capacity of the classroom would not be exceeded, contact Tiffany Shelton in Student Academic Services at shelton@spu.edu or 206-281-2635 by 3 p.m. on March 30 to have your class enrollment increased. In order to stop the waitlist on time, the timeline for increasing enrollment needs to match the waitlist deadline.
Last Day to Add Classes Is April 4
Students are able to register, add and drop courses until 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 4. After this time, Web registration is no longer available for Spring Quarter. This is the last day to register for classes, including classes that meet once a week.
Other Registration Deadlines
Students wishing to take a course pass/no credit or register for an internship, independent study, or individual instruction in music may do so in Student Academic Services (Demaray Hall 151) until 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 11.




Helping Those With Mental Health Issues

The next speaker for SPU's Living Well Initiative is University of Washington Assistant Professor of Social Work Perry Wien, M.S.W. On Friday, March 31, at 8 a.m. in the Library Seminar Room, Wien will talk about ways to facilitate recovery for those with severe and persistent mental health issues. This event is free and open to faculty, staff, students, and the public. The Living Well Initiative is a multidisciplinary educational program addressing the needs of persons and families affected by severe and persistent mental health conditions. The program is co-sponsored by the School of Health Sciences and the School of Psychology, Family, and Community. For additional information, visit the Web site. More




Symphonic Masterpieces With Thalia Symphony

SPU's orchestra-in-residence, the Thalia Symphony, performs music by Bernstein, Mozart, and Gershwin on Friday, April 7, at 7:30 p.m. at First Free Methodist Church. The special guest is George Fiore, best known to the Seattle community in his role as chorus-master of the Seattle Opera. The symphony is a select ensemble of string, wind, and percussion instrumentalists conducted by Professor of Music Eric Hanson. General admission is $12, and $8 for students and seniors. Film, Faith, and Justice Forum at SPU

“Film, Faith, and Justice," a forum exploring the theology of social justice, will take place on the SPU campus, April 7-9. The forum is a landmark event in Seattle that looks at current issues of social justice and faith through film and dialogue. Hosted by the School of Theology and the online theology and arts journal, The Other Journal, this forum will include award-winning documentaries, nationally known theologians, and local leaders giving lectures and participating in discussion panels. SPU students with an SPU ID have free admission to the forum events, and CFE credit is available. For more information, visit the School of Theology Web site. More




Nominate a Student for the Barnabas Servant Leadership Award

Do you know a student who demonstrates Christian character, has made a commitment to on- or off-campus service, shows a willingness to take on tasks regardless of recognition or challenge, demonstrates leadership, and will be a senior during the 2006-07 school year? If so, we encourage you to nominate this student (or students) for the Barnabas Servant Leadership Scholarship. Recipients of the scholarship receive a $750 cash grant and a contribution of $250 given in their name to a charity of his or her choice. Online nominations are due by April 14, and can be found on the Office of Campus Ministries Student Leaders Web page. More




Continuums of Service Conference Registration

The Western Region Campus Compact Consortium's ninth annual Continuums of Service Conference titled “Engaging Leadership: New Visions, Voices, and Models," will be held April 19-21 at the Double Tree Hotel in Bellevue, Washington. Nominate Someone for Staff of the Year by April 15

Want to show your appreciation for a staff member? Act now by nominating him or her to SPU's Staff Council for one of the 2006 "Staff of the Year" awards. Two staff members (one exempt and one non-exempt) will be awarded $1,000 in appreciation of their contribution to the SPU community. Deadline for nominations is April 15. Spring Faculty and Staff On-Campus Weight Watchers Begins March 28

Feel better and look great for summer and beyond. SPU employees have lost from 10 to 100 pounds on this realistic and successful program. The spring on-campus Weight Watchers series runs Tuesdays, March 28 through June 6 (no meeting on April 11), noon–1 p.m. in SUB 207. The cost is $120 for the 10-session series. Three Generations of Chinese Art Exhibit Ends March 29

Don't miss an extraordinary exhibit at SPU's Art Center Gallery. The exhibit features paintings by Chinese artists, including Teng Chiu, considered to be one of the first modern Chinese painters. The collection is owned by SPU Professor of International Business and Economics Joanna Poznanska and her husband, Kazimierz Poznanski. The exhibit runs until Wednesday, March 29. The Art Center Gallery is open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission is free.




Pet Photo of the Week

“This is Levi in his ‘Super Dog' persona when he participated in the Greenwood Parade last summer. He decided to help out the Progressive Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) and represent dogs who had been adopted from shelters. I think, in the end, he thought the parade was just for him and his buddies to show off their super doggy powers." Jordana Ross, risk management and insurance specialist in the Finance Office.

Wall Talks About New Book in Forum

Professor of Christian Scriptures Rob Wall and well-known Seattle clergyman Anthony B. Robinson will discuss their new book titled Called to Be Church: The Book of Acts for a New Day at Forum on Thursday, March 30, at 9:30 a.m. in Demaray Hall 150. The book dives into many of the most vexing issues facing the church then and now, including conflict resolution, pluralism, multiculturalism, sexuality, money, church and state, the role of the Holy Spirit, and Scripture's authority.

Davis Quoted in Seattle P-I

Professor of Political Science Reed Davis was quoted in the March 22 edition of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Davis, former chair of the King County Republican Party, commented on the recent fundraising visit to Seattle by Senator John McCain. Read the article online. More




Parrotts on Joyce Meyer's TV Show, Other Media Appearances

Les and Leslie Parrott, co-directors of SPU's Center for Relationship Development, were the guests of Joyce Meyer on her television show, “Enjoying Everyday Life." The Parrotts appeared on the show March 21-24, talking about improving relationships and their book titled “Love Talk." They can also be seen on Seattle's FOX-TV (Channel 13) on Tuesday mornings at 8:40 a.m. Their 60-second daily program titled “Love Talk" is heard on more than 200 radio stations nationwide. They are scheduled to appear on the “Focus on the Family' radio program, April 20-21. Les is also a professor of psychology at SPU.




Perkins Featured in Seattle P-I

Dr. John M. Perkins, renowned civil rights leader and founding partner with SPU in the John Perkins Center for Reconciliation, Leadership Training, and Community Development, was featured in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer on March 2. During his visit at SPU, he met with more than 80 students from King's Elementary School. The students had read a book on Perkins' life. Read the story online. More
