CAMPUS NEWS & EVENTS
Office of University Communications Closed Aug. 8-10
The Office of University Communications will be closed for an in-house organization
and planning work retreat August 8-10. Although the office will be closed, the UC
staff will be on site and available in emergencies. In the case of an emergency, call Office Manager Julia Weir at (206) 281-2051, and she will connect you with the appropriate staff member. If you are currently working with UC on a project, your communications specialist will ensure that the closure does not cause you any delays. Please call your communications specialist or Julia if you have questions or concerns. Thank you for helping us prepare for a new academic year!
Campus Events for 2005-06
Twice a year, the Office of University Communications publishes a community events brochure titled “Engage," highlighting a sampling of campus events of interest to the public. Previous brochures have invited neighbors to guest lectures, symposia, concerts, athletic events, gallery showings, theatre productions, etc. This brochure is sent to more than 35,000 alumni, friends, and Seattle neighbors. We are now collecting event information for the 2005-06 academic year, especially for Autumn and Winter Quarters. If you are planning an event of interest to the public, please forward the information to Tracy Norlen in University Communications at email@example.com. We are also interested in any possible events you may be planning, so please send that information as well. If you have questions, contact Tracy at (206) 281-2977.

FACULTY & STAFF NEWS
Scranton, Woodward Present at Conference
George Scranton, professor of theatre, and Bill Woodward, professor of history, gave discipline-specific presentations at a conference sponsored by the International Institute for Christian Studies (IICS) in Kansas City, July 14-16. George discussed "The Artist's Process: Incarnation, Imago Dei, and Identity," stressing that the Christian director, conductor, or choreographer must seek not only an excellent artistic product, but also ensure a process toward that product marked by love and encouragement. Bill gave a condensed version of his recent Weter Lecture titled "Choosing Christian Hope Over the American Dream." As with his campus lecture, Bill's historical analysis of elements of the American Promise pointed to how reality falls short of the dream, in contrast to a robust hope grounded in the Christian story. The IICS is a recruiting and placement agency sending Christian scholars to teach at public universities overseas, both in continuing positions and on one-year appointments for professors on sabbatical. The conference included impressive reports from some of these professors -- one of whom, it turned out, had been in Bill's high school youth group but whom he hadn't seen for 40 years. George likewise met the cousin of a fellow student from Bible school days.
The Office of Human Resources would like the SPU community to join us in welcoming Dale Anderson as the new director of student programs.
